An increasing number of users perform their daily computing tasks entirely within the web browser — turning the Web into an important platform for application development. The Web as a platform, however, lacks the computational performance of native applications. This problem has motivated the inception of Microsoft Xax and Google Native Client (NaCl), two independent projects that fa- cilitate the development of native web applications. Native web applications allow the extension of conventional web applications with compiled native code, while maintaining operating system portability. This dissertation determines the bene- fits and drawbacks of native web applications. It also addresses the question how the performance of JavaScript web applications compares to that of native appli- cations and native web applications. Four application benchmarks are introduced that focus on different performance aspects: number crunching (serial and parallel), 3D graphics performance, and data processing. A performance analysis is under- taken in order to determine and compare the performance characteristics of native C applications, JavaScript web applications, and NaCl native web applications. -

There are 2 Types of Files in the Graphics World Bit Mapped (RASTER) • There are two kinds of computer graphics: Bit Mapped (RASTER) and Object Oriented (VECTOR). Bit mapped graphics are graphics that are stored in the form of a bitmap. They are a sequence of bits that get drawn onto the screen. You create bit mapped graphics using a painting program. • When you enlarge a bit mapped image, you will get a pixelated look. If you are planning to print out an image that was originally 3 inches on 3 inches as 6 inches by 6 inches, you will get a very pixelated look. • Bit mapped graphics tend to create larger files than object oriented graphics. • As you can see from these two pictures, when a bitmapped image gets scaled up, the detail is lost, as opposed to an object oriented drawing where no pixelation occurs. Life without Flash Are your courses ready? After December 31, 2020, browsers will no longer support the Flash Player. Here is Adobe’s announcement: https://theblog.adobe.com/adobe-flash-update/ What does this mean for HSC Moodle course owners? Most LMS systems and browsers are transitioning away from Flash. You may be at risk of losing your online courses or resources, if they are Adobe Flash only. Moodle courses will need to be republished to alternate formats such as HTML5, MP4, etc. as well as halting any new flash based programs from being uploaded before the December 31st deadline. Many programs have already been getting ready for this change and already offer a conversion to another format. Check with your software support/IT to see how to make this transition easier. How do I find out if my course uses Flash? If you suspect a resource uses Flash, you can simply right-click what you believe to be Flash content to see if a Flash context menu appears: If you are using a browser that blocks Flash content, you may see icons like these: What is the alternative? An alternative solution for course owners is HTML5. HTML5 works with the same multimedia elements as Flash and many web developers have already begun moving to HTML5, which means it‘s supported by most browsers and you won’t need to install anything extra. HTML5-based courses will continue to function as expected. What should I do if my course uses Flash? If Flash courses are published using Flash/HTML5, and designed to fall back to HTML5 when the Flash plugin is removed from the browser, test your courses fall back capability to see whether HTML5 will work as expected. -

Android apps frequently incorporate third-party libraries that contain native code; this not only facilitates rapid application develop- ment and distribution, but also provides new ways to generate revenue. As a matter of fact, one in two apps in Google Play are linked with a library providing ad network services. However, linking applications with third-party code can have severe security implications: malicious libraries written in native code can exfiltrate sensitive information from a running app, or completely modify the execution runtime, since all native code is mapped inside the same address space with the execution environment, namely the Dalvik/ART VM. We propose NaClDroid, a framework that addresses these problems, while still allowing apps to include third-party code. NaClDroid prevents malicious native-code libraries from hijacking Android applications using Software Fault Isolation. More specifically, we place all native code in a Native Client sandbox that prevents uncon- strained reads, or writes, inside the process address space. NaClDroid has little overhead; for native code running inside the NaCl sandbox the slowdown is less than 10% on average. The programming capabilities of the Web can be viewed as an afterthought, designed originally by non-programmers for relatively simple scripting tasks. This has resulted in cornucopia of partially over- lapping options for building applications. Depending on one's viewpoint, a generic standards-compatible web browser supports three, four or five built-in application rendering and programming models. In this paper, we give an overview and comparison of these built-in client-side web ap- plication architectures in light of the established software engineering principles. We also reflect on our earlier work in this area, and provide an expanded discussion of the current situation. In conclusion, while the dominance of the base HTML/CSS/JS technologies cannot be ignored, we expect Web Components and WebGL to gain more popularity as the world moves towards increasingly complex web applications, including systems supporting virtual and augmented reality. Abstract. Adobe Flash is present on nearly every PC, and it is in- creasingly being targeted by malware authors. Despite this, research into methods for detecting malicious Flash files has been limited. Similarly, there is very little documentation available about the techniques com- monly used by Flash malware. Instead, most research has focused on JavaScript malware. This paper discusses common techniques such as heap spraying, JIT spraying, and type confusion exploitation in the context of Flash mal- ware. Where applicable, these techniques are compared to those used in malicious JavaScript. Subsequently, FlashDetect is presented, an off- line Flash file analyzer that uses both dynamic and static analysis, and that can detect malicious Flash files using ActionScript 3. FlashDetect classifies submitted files using a naive Bayesian classifier based on a set of predefined features. Our experiments show that FlashDetect has high classification accuracy, and that its efficacy is comparable with that of commercial anti-virus products.
