5 Where Are They Now? The Registrar

As so often happens, the relative of a past owner enquires of the website: No. 1: Sheila Robus asks … “My brother owned a three wheeled Morgan in 1962 the registration number was CNH 111I was wondering if anyone has restored it and if it is still on the road? I have found an old black and white photo - The car was dark green as far as I can recall”. To which Registrar, Steve Lister replied: We do have a note of CNH 111 in the Registry but unfortunately the last recorded owner is an M. Wachet in 1961 – nothing since. He lived in the southeast at the time. I can tell you that the Morgan was an F-Super model and was registered in Northampton in March 1951 - so was one of the last three wheeler Morgans to be made. I have made a note of your interest and if she turns up I shall get back to you. They do still “turn up” – we have had about six in the last year. Thank you for the photo, now added to our files. Best wishes, Steve Lister (MTWC Registrar)

No.2: This time, Steve writes: We’ve had an enquiry through the website from Sue Edgecombe asking if the F-Type owned by her parents in the 1950’s is still around. It’s an F2 (or perhaps Super Sports!), registered CLU 81 – that’s a February 1936 London registration. Unfortunately, the last record in the Registry is from 1967 when the Morgan was owned by a C. Jacobs in the Midlands. The attached (fantastic) photo shows Peter and Doreen Tutton about to set off on their honeymoon to Bournemouth from Banbury. Looks like they have packed for a month! It was taken on the 2nd March 1956. Sue mentioned that Peter and Doreen attended many rallies in CLU 81 in the 50s – indeed Pete Thompson has several photos of the car in the Club Library. See the MTWC badge on the radiator. Does anyone have any information about the car?

The Science Museum acquired the car from Mr Archibald Woods, who wrote to the Museum in 1938, saying that he had looked round the motor transport section at the Museum and failed to see a Morgan. He went on to say that he had a 1914 Sports model in very good condition. Obituary, Alan Crouch Chris Booth

With great regret, I must report that Alan Crouch died on Easter Monday, he had been suffering with leg problems for over a year and had not driven his three wheeler for some time. Born in 1929 his working life was in the Royal Navy from 1946 to c.1977 attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. His final posting was at the Royal Naval college at Greenwich. Upon retirement he bought his Morgan 4/4, 4 seater, reliving earlier times when he had owned a series one. A new job followed as office manager with a London law firm and the 4/4 was Happier times - typical of Alan’s sense of fun used daily to commute to the station. Jeff is a most interesting character from our Vintage Car Club. He is a builder, but spends most of his time restoring vintage cars and bikes, mainly American Fords and vintage Nortons. He and a couple of friends have a great collection of Nortons and a few other bikes. As well as the complete bikes which can be seen in the photos there are a dozen or so more in pieces. The shed shown is his metalwork shed, next door is the woodworking shed where as well as the building work he makes propellers for vintage aircraft. These are commissioned by most of the collectors in NZ and are exported too. In his April report, Duncan Charlton refers to problems with an oversize JAP pinion. That problem was one we encountered too. The engine had been rebuilt by an “expert”, and among many problems we encountered was a tightness in the timing gears.

20 The NW Group Jaunt - 2014 W. E. Wosther

Inspired by the Round Britain runs of the late Oliver Brooke, Roy and Angela Summer scales have undertaken to provide a similar diversion for lucky members of the North West Group. Round Up Your Non-Roving Reporter

Alan Goodwin writes: Seeing Nev Lear's excellent photograph of oil seals rampant on a field of 3 speeder gearbox (June P. 21) gives the perfect opportunity to reveal yet another of my appalling bodges. To the same end I injected a small amount of thin slippery grease, such as that used for the front sliders, into the working clearance of the lower selector rod, using the cap of the detent spring as a screw greaser cup. Two years on, and this rod which is completely submerged, has yet to leak, while leakage from the upper rod, entirely above the static oil level, is too little to bother about. Grand Prix Retro – Le Puy Notre Dame A brief message from Mike Guess to those embarking on this annual pilgrimage. You will be welcome at the “Le Puy a Vins “ bar by the cathedral, for drinks 6.30 to 8.00pm on the Friday evening. This is our usual get-together for the U.K Tricyclecaristes to see who has made it this year and renew old friendships. Timed to let you get away for an evening meal. Don’t forget to promote “Equipe Morgan” with your team t-shirts. Drive The Road Race Circuit That Never Was. Steve Uprichard …. I was invited to join Tormog, the High Peak MSCC Centre, for what has become an annual event – driving The Road Race Circuit that Never Was on Sunday 27th July, the day after Darley Moor Race Meeting. The permit has already been paid for and we'll be supplied with route maps (based on one I edited last year), so it's FREE! Back in the early 1950's a circuit was proposed on 12 miles of public road between Buxton and Ashbourne. A catastrophic accident at le Mans put paid to it but the roads are still there. John Holleran has asked me to infor m everyone that he is unable to attend the Spares Fair and will therefore be unable to deliver pre-ordered spares unless prior arrangements are made WELL IN ADVANCE. John has also asked me to state that his non-appearance is entirely due to his previous commitment to take part in an important Magic Competition. The Editor wishes to express his gratitude to the following esteemed members who very kindly collected items on his behalf and also arranged delivery through another Club member. They are: Mike Guess, Chas Reynolds, Tony Quinn, Alf Gapper, Tom Cowley, Jon Mattey. Also Andy Brown and Gary and Barbara Caroline for assisting with the transfer of the editorial equipment from John Chatwin to himself., even if he has said that before…. Maureen Linfield sent a delightful letter of appreciation for all the kind and generous messages and condolences that she and her family had received. Maureen was most complimentary of the members that she and John, her late husband had met and would very much like to stay in touch, particularly with the South Coast Group. If someone local to Maureen could offer her a lift to the occasional S C meeting, as she doesn’t drive, she would be most grateful. Nev Lear offers the following advice: A Winters run of well salted roads, followed by a rare enforced lay-up left my F4 unused for 6 months. I washed off the salt with a pressure washer and degreaser before garaging the machine. Lying unused I neglected to lubricate the chain, so that when I finally moved it did not seem to roll very easily? The chain was solid with rust, I couldn’t even drive out the connecting link, every roller was seized solid and I had to break the chain with an angle grinder to fit the replacement. Be warned...... the first time in almost 50 years I have had to do that. From the Editor to anyone writing an email an article or report. Please use any font that you chose as it helps with identification of checked articles and please choose an individual description not just “photo1” or “article” like everyone else! THANK YOU!

There were three Morgan 3 Wheelers competing at this year’s Cholmondeley Pageant of Power on 13-15th June 2014. 24 The German Group Opening Run Maurice Traveller

Passau is one of Germany’s most beautiful, oldest and most extraordinary towns. Its special attraction stems mainly from its unusual position at the concourse of three rivers, the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz. However, its location in a graceful valley is particularly stunning. This year’s meeting was to be held on 29th, 30th and 31st of May at the Hotel Kreuz- Passau huber at Neuberg a Inn just outside Passau. A pleasant evening was spent days in advance and the first casualties were with dinner and catching up with old friends. Ian and Maria Parkinson suffering terminal engine failure of their MX4 engined Supersports in the middle of France, they continued by hire car. During the morning of Thursday the 29th people started to arrive at the hotel and it was great to catch up with old and new friends. The main British contingent arrived before lunch and included Goo and Gunther in a DKW Two Stroke. There was a run planned for the afternoon for the early arrivals, however due to the poor weather conditions and heavy rain it was decided to complete this run by modern cars. So we all set off to follow the route card with at least two hardy Day 2. Those choosing the viewing point still would visit the motor museum, however the majority chose the softer option( a wise move) we chose to go up the hill to the viewing point. It was not as we thought a hill that would be a struggle for the Morgans , it was that you parked your car , then walked up the hill and boy what a walk. It was however well worth it, the view from the top which was actually the border with Czechoslovakia was awesome. So was the heavy breathing from some of the group. I bought my threewheeler in February 2012. I t was a very cold day - the temperature was about minus 20 degrees. After the purchase I had to make all the necessary car services and a new examination by the Swiss motor vehicle inspection. I also had to arrange a new FIVA examination with a new FIVA identity card. After about three months, I could make my first drive with my new Morgan. Do you want the group meeting listings reinstated? 3. Would you rather see details of the regular group meetings listed every month and the local events listed after the Group Report as currently? 4. 4037 F4 Hand Throttle Clive Perry

The article in the Bulletin on adding a foot throttle lead me to hand throttles on the F4 or F2. My 1934 F4 was fitted with a hand and foot throttle from new. I presume it was standard on all early models. The hand throttle is a very useful feature. It acts as a very effective cruise control allowing a more comfortable seating position. When using it there is less transmission clunking which tells you something but I don’t know what. Fitting a hand throttle should be straight forward on cars with a mechanical throttle linkage. The AMAL hand throttle has a 3 inch lever and is fixed with a rear stud and nut. The slot between the steering wheel spokes is locally relieved to allow the stud to pass through. There are two feet on the cast throttle base which locate each side of the spokes. The lever is on the lower right steering wheel spoke and positioned to be convenient for operation by your right thumb. The 37 inch cable complete with 20 inch of outer passes through the bulkhead in line with a threaded 1 3/4 inch long bracket mounted on the steering box. A cable adjuster is threaded into this bracket allowing adjustment as per the photo. From here the inner cable continues in a straight line traveling to a 3 inch vertical bracket welded 2 inches from the end of the foot throttle shaft as per photo. The bracket has a slot leading to a hole. This hole has a loose brass bush and the cable a nipple. It can be noted that the total movement to full throttle is only ¾ inch. Do ensure the lie of the cable and its length behind the steering wheel is such that there is free movement from lock to lock. I have 14 inches of cable inside the car and 6 inches under the bonnet. The danger here is that if the cable is too short or if it catches you will accelerate as you turn the wheel.

4241 Notes from the Custodian Ross Herbert

All quiet on ‘The Gerald’ front this month although my request in the last issue for pictures of Gerald himself has yielded a couple of nice photos taken at Brooklands in 1992 by Bernard Barek. The article on the F4 is due to appear in MOG Magazine in September as part of their ‘Iconic Morgan’ series. The F4 is also booked into the Pickersleigh Road celebrations as the 1937 entry. Just a casual request; but I wonder if anyone has a suitable trailer going spare? I’m aware that as we are trying to limit the mileage of ‘The Gerald’ this does rather limit its use by members outside the West Midlands who don’t have access to a trailer. It was hoped that a local hire company could be used but this has proved rather problematic.

VSCC Cadwell Park Rose Knutton

The line of bobbing colours edging the circuit for the practice sessions left one in no doubt that it was going to be a wet one. Taking our place under the dripping trees we watched as the Morgans skated round the track, positively enjoying the conditions. The three competitors, Duncan Wood, Sue Darbyshire and Gary Caroline achieved the top three lap times and, although sodden, were all happy. Duncan’s was the only Morgan in the five lap handicap race (race four) and went from the back of the grid, with a one minute 15 second handicap, to arrive at the finish in third Duncan was gaining on her fast. He managed place behind Geoff Thoms in a Fiat 508S and to catch up with Sue but was unable to pass her. Nick Hayward-Cook in an Monoposto Gary had to withdraw due to loss of power, in first place. If only there was one more with Sue and Duncan continuing for another lap...... The track was beginning to dry out by couple of ‘close encounter’ laps before Duncan now and the standing water had evaporated. raised his arm and also pulled off. Charles Gillett in his Frazer Nash Super Sports was surrounded but determined not to be intimidated and he escaped from the start as quickly as he could, leaving the two speeders to creep off the line gently. Sue was quick to pick up and started the chase up the hill towards Coppice with Duncan and Gary in hottish pursuit. Sue got herself into third position behind Rob Carr and Charles Gillet and

42 YND Visit to Pat Davy’s Museum Eric Eadon

On the 20th was our first mid-week day-time run Brian Woods, Geoff Cowley, Ann Davy to Pat Davy’s DOT Museum near Ashbourne. 10 came, 2 not even retired, in a mixture of 2- and 3-speed twins, an F4, a 4-wheeler, a Sprite and assorted tin tops. We were made very welcome by Ann (treasurer of the MTWC for some years) and Pat. What an array of cars and bikes, from Harleys - one immaculate combination going on safari the next day, twin-cam Fiat-engined 4 wheeler, Pat’s 1935 SV WC Matchless Family ‘Show Car’ in beautiful condition, plus several other bikes, and that is only in the garage! Now for the museum, purpose built by Pat, who took a ‘restoration gap year’ to erect it. 25 DOTs from 1923 4 strokes to the 1970s 2 strokes I know from my youth (your youth in 1970, who are you kidding dad! – Heather), an NSU raced by Pat in classic events, a 1000cc Vincent and many other exhibits, photographs, catalogues, advertising signs, JAP engines with DOT embossed timing cases, assorted 2 strokes and, the stars for me, the oil cooled ‘Bradshaw’ OHV engines DOT used extensively during the Geoff Cowley and Tom Cowley 1920s. A fabulous display beautifully restored and presented which we were privileged to see whilst receiving imbibes of tea and biscuits. We were able to reciprocate, thanks to Jake and Jon, by showing Pat a collection of Gordon McMinnies TT and 1913 Cycle Car Grand Prix medals. I would go on but the editor will ban me (not to mention the blisters on my fingers – Heather). Photo left: Pat Davy, Eric Eadon and an unidentified member (apologies … Ed ) inspect Jake’s array of Gordon McMinnies’ medals.

44 More Period Photos

A neighbour of mine recently showed me two photographs of a Morgan his father had owned and I forward them to you as they may fill an odd corner of a Bulletin. His father is in the second photograph aged 21 when he lived in Leamington Spa. The photographs were taken in 1936. The album records that the Morgan was made in 1926 and had a sidevalve JAP engine and was clearly a two speeder, although it seems to have some modifications.
