As before, the event featured a paddock full of Morgans taking runs up the famous hillclimb track and many more Mogs parked in the field alongside, with lots of other attractions for spectators to enjoy. Many dealers were present with all sorts of Morgans from old to new cars, including lots of Aero 8s from early Series 1 models (now nearly 15 years old) to the latest cars just completed. There were also quite a few from overseas – I spotted Belgian, German, Swedish and Czech number plates and probably more. The Aero 8 GTN, the 2004 Le Mans racer, had another run out with Greg Dixon Smith at the wheel. There was also a line-up Miscellany September 2016 EVENTS 5

In addition to the cars there was a hot air balloon and demonstrations including making the Morgan’s wooden wheel arches and barrel-making by the Balvenie whisky distillery, which also had a hospitality area serving whisky by the dram and whisky- based cocktails. “Popbangcolour” artist Ian Cook was painting a Morgan picture using his trademark model cars, blues singer Elles Bailey and her band performed on the stage near the paddock, and the Worcester Male Voice Choir were also singing. There were also quite a few trade stands, and the MSCC Membership stand had lots of visitors. 8 TRAVEL Miscellany September 2016 SpotMog visit to Sutton Court Farm On Monday 11th September 20 SpotMoggers arrived at Sutton Court Farm near Ludlow following a drive through the Long Mynd. During the following week we visited Ironbridge and the British Iron Works Centre, with its impressive statue of an angel made from knives from knife amnesties. We dined at a number of restaurants, the Clive being particularly accommodating, placing us in our own room, which protected other diners from the spilt wine and our raucous enjoyment. Despite the rather damp weather at the start of the week and Martin’s very loud socks, we all had a very enjoyable week. Many thanks to Dave and Carol Gibbon for organising this return visit. As in previous years, TorMog, along with our guests from the vintage jet display, while excessive algae in the lake also curtailed the Midlands, North, and , represented the MSCC at the wakeboarders; this did allow them to repair to the bar early ahead of the renamed Cholmondeley Power and Speed. Sadly, a family Saturday night Comedy Festival, however, so all was not lost. Action on the track consisted of some drivers aiming for the fastest time of the weekend, Niki Faulkner in the ‘factory’ Ariel Atom holding of a swarm of SuperMoto riders, with local lad Oliver Webb, who headed straight off from Cholmondeley for the Le Mans 24 Hours, beaten in the ‘factory’ BAC Mono by the much more homespun DAX Rush of Duncan Cowper. Other drivers aimed for regularity honours, aiming to get as close as possible to their practice time in one of the competitive sessions. Of added interest this year were the rally cars, especially the surprisingly rorty three cylinder M-Sport built Ford Fiesta. Just before the event it was announced that Cholmondeley will play host to the first Rally GB stage to be held outside of Wales this century, along with a dedicated rally festival, later this year. Behind this trio there was action aplenty, although Russell Paterson held a somewhat lonely fourth spot ahead of an equally untroubled Philip Goddard. Dear Charles, We have just returned from 3 weeks touring France in our 2009 Roadster (MW51MOG) and stayed overnight in a small family B&B east of Rouen called the Hostellerie du Domaine Saint Paul in Lyons La Foret. The owner, Patrick Lorrain, asked me to take look in his garage and there I found, in excellent condition, a 1965 Morgan 4/4. The best option for where the side-screens touch the B posts is clear paint protection film, but this can be tricky to apply well (although STEERING COLUMN AND BULKHEAD HOLE practice does help). On my car I’ve used paint protection film around the doors in anticipation that they may rub. I kept hold of the luggage carrier from my previous car. When I came to fit it I found that the rear over-rider brackets have changed shape slightly, and the luggage rack brackets wouldn’t fit without filing the tops of the brackets flat. Since I don’t possess a power file, this meant an energetic hour or so with a hand file before the brackets would fit. Before finding out about this I had considered repainting the over-rider brackets, because the finish is much rougher than on my 2005 car, where the finish is more like enamel. Thankfully I didn’t do this. Had I done so, I would then have had to file through my new paint! Where the bolts go through the rack and over-rider brackets, I’ve fitted stainless socket head allen bolts with dome headed nuts, which look better than standard nylocs and bolts. Before I fitted the rack, I added some curved ash spare wheel retainers. I did this job on my Roadster a while ago. You will all have done this – remove the T bar and the spare wheel slides down the plate and bumps into the bottom edge of the panel. very close to the rear panel. Measured twice, (and padded with neoprene strips if necessary), these brackets will hold the spare wheel in the correct place and are a huge improvement. On our first trip home, I occasionally felt a slight knock from the steering column. It was one of those knocks that sounded from the column cowl, which amplified the sound. It wasn’t long before I was upside down in the foot well, checking if there was any adjustment in NOTE THE LEATHER PATCHES IN YELLOW the column, because the knock appeared to be coming from where the column passes through the bulkhead. Anyway, I can confirm there’s no adjustment and the nuts and bolts when the flats are at the top – no contact. When the round sections which hold the column support against the bulkhead are very tricky are at the top, the chassis flexing is enough to make the column touch to get at! So I pulled off the leather seal on the bulkhead, and this the bulkhead, creating a knock. So the solution was very simple. With revealed that although the hole through the bulkhead is of ample the flat section at the top there’s enough room to insert a small needle dimensions, the column passes through that hole right at the top. file. Half an hour later I’d opened the gap to about 1mm, and that’s At this point the steering column has two flats, it’s part of the all it needed. I replaced the leather seal with contact adhesive and telescopic collapse function, so you can’t tell I’ve been in there! One of my pet hates is that the trailing edge of the doors are painted wood. An easy fix is to make a leather panel, and providing the leather is thin, it’s a simple job to wrap the leather around a shaped strip of double sided tape. Obviously a paper template is step 1 and a bit of practice is needed. It’s also easier to match black leather. This is a quick and worthwhile visual improvement. And while we are in there, the same procedure can be done to the side-screen vertical frames. First remove the outer side-screen panel – secured with cross-head set-screws. Then cut some thin leather to the right size. Turn the top over like a trouser turn-up to hide the raw edge, and fit to the frame with double-sided tape. Wrap around the edges, and replace the outer panel. I cap off the cross-head screws with drawing pin heads painted black (or silver), and stuck with a blob of contact adhesive. They just look better capped off. In all jobs using leather, the thinner the better, it’s much easier to manipulate. And that’s what pride of ownership is all about – taking care of things! We counted them all out and we counted all but one back Anglemog’s trip to the Mosel Introduction by David and Pat Waite

En route home from our Champagne trip last year, Roger and Christine Upward called in to visit their friend Wolf, who lives a couple of hours’ drive from the Mosel. When they mentioned that they were planning our 2016 trip, Wolf suggested the Mosel region, and by the time Roger and Christine arrived home Wolf had the bones of our holiday laid out. Roger and Wolf put together a great programme, based at the Hotel Deutschherrenhof, Zeltingen-Rachtig, at a brilliant half-board price. A total of 17 cars signed up - a record for these trips - making their way in various groups. We took the indirect route via Bayeux and Giverny, which was stressful because of overheating problems until we identified that the radiator sensor wires had been connected the wrong way round after a re-spray. What’s that? Don’t you love alarm clocks! Up very early, 11 Morgans set out for the drive on Sunday 17th July to Sherborne Castle Classic and Supercars Show in the far north west of Dorset. THE MORGAN STAND Built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594 and home since 1617 of the Digby Family, which enlarged the Castle to its present size, its scenic grounds designed by Capability Brown make this perfect for such a large car show. Entering the show ground, the vastness of the show dawns, with 46 car club stands displaying 1,600+ cars from early classics through to the latest supercars, 30+ trade stands and 26 craft and autojumble stands catering for gents, ladies and children’s interests. Once our Morgans are neatly arranged on their stand, including Tim Ayres’ impressive Class C Racing +8, and the LogMog feather flag raised, it’s off to wander around this massive site to view the Aston Martins, , , and Teslas through to the early 1900s race cars. Hey, that looks like a Merlin engine; yes, the 1928 Rolls Royce Overland Special with a 27 Litre V12! So back to the Morgan stand and Mike and Enid Smith already have their picnic table, parasol and chairs set up and kindly invite our members to bring their picnics and join them. We soon learn from others that we have hardly scratched the surface in looking around the site, and of course there is still the castle to visit at the knockdown charge of £3 per person. Our Morgans certainly attract the public, with many questions asked and bonnets up to view the engines. So after lunch it’s a look around the fascinating castle, then more viewing of the many stands. Hell’s teeth! - those huge cow horns on that massive American car hood (that’s the bonnet to us) would look great on the bonnet of the +8 along with the Merlin engine! Well, we can dream. I chicken out of trying the Bloodhound Driving Experience Simulator in which you attempt to reach 1,000mph and stop without writing off the vehicle and yourself. Oh, and I should mention the noise… From the excellent Arcadia Jazz group, the Hotsi Totsie singers (no, I didn’t make up that name) to the early 1900s and more recent race cars firing up their engines, to the convoys throughout the day of Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, and the PistonHeads sports cars (numerous marques), it is noisy! Too soon it’s time to pack up and head off back home and say goodbye to this outstanding show which has raised thousands for charities supported by the Rotary Clubs of Yeo-Vale and Sherborne Castle, the headline charity being Cancer Research UK, and several local charities including Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. rills and canals. There is the added interest of pavilions and a yew maze. As it was such a hot afternoon the cooling effect of the water was much appreciated and one of our party even indulged in a little wild paddling to cool off. Although the maze beat some of us, the view from the top of the tower at its centre was well worth the climb and, having emerged from the tunnel beneath the tower, the few squeals as we walked behind the waterfall didn’t dampen the fun. Saturday was another lovely sunny day and looked set to be perfect weather for Thrill on the Hill. As usual, we were greeted by the happy relaxed atmosphere and were soon bumping into old friends, some of us literally on the dodgems! We reached the paddock area just in time to see Chris and Mike C edge their way to the start for the first of their runs, although it was not easy to recognise them under the safety of their matching crash helmets. We all had a great day and would like to thank the Morgan Motor Company and all those involved in making it such a fun day for everyone once again. Although overcast, it was still warm on the Sunday morning and after our last breakfast at the Abbey, six cars loaded with luggage set off in two waves towards Gloucester. Splendid views of the Malvern hills were seen from the B4208, the route we took to drive to Twigworth and the Nature in Art Museum and Art Gallery where we had chosen to break our journey. The stunning art collection is housed in a fine Georgian mansion at the end of a mile-long drive where hefty speed humps proved a bit of a challenge, especially for the Roadster whose passenger had to alight for two of them. After this, it was reluctantly time to say our farewells and take different routes to our various homes, having thoroughly enjoyed our four days away and, amazingly, all with the hoods down!
