Fighting games have, in the past few years, delved into an entirely new subgenre. It's not fighting, but it's not wrestling either. Games based on the UFC and Pride fighting leagues have already spun off moderately successful titles -- now it's time for K-1, one of the most popular mixed martial arts (MMA) leagues in the world -- to launch a brand-new edition. Thanks to the backing of Konami, a sponsor of the league who's found success with the World Grand Prix series in Japan, there's a good chance that K-1 may catch the attention of PS2 gamers. While there are some obvious hiccups in the execution of the game, it's definitely something to watch out for if you've caught the recent Pay-Per-View debut of K-1 in the U.S. and want more -- or you just like the gritty MMA style. If you're like me -- not a K-1 enthusiast, but a fighting gamer -- then you're probably only peripherally aware of the league. Although some middling K-1 games came out for the original PlayStation a few years ago, before Konami picked up the license, UFC has more or less comprised the entire genre in the U.S. until this year. Unlike UFC, K-1 doesn't allow for grappling or submission holds. It's straight fighting, in any martial arts style that starts with K (including Karate, Kung Fu, Kickboxing and Tae Kwon Do -- which I think is cheating on the K, there -- and others.) To get us in the right frame of mind, Konami hosted a K-1 event in Las Vegas where we were introduced to Bob Sapp, one of the hottest stars in the league. Sapp's gregarious and eloquent nature was the perfect way to acclimate an unsure audience. "I've been following Konami since the NES -- so this is like a dream come true!" he quipped, referring to his appearance in an upcoming K-1 game. An ex-NFL player and ex-WCW wrestler, Sapp's smiling face belied his hulking frame -- and put my mind at ease about being in the same room as a man who's reputed to be able to crush an apple with his bare hand. Unfortunately, this year's edition of K-1 World Grand Prix doesn't include Sapp. Don't worry, though; there's still a roster of 21 internationally based fighters to pick from. Each fighter also contributed his own motion capture and distinctive moves to the game -- even so, don't expect the smoothness of a top-grade fighting game. The animation isn't bad, but Konami's team hasn't achieved the kind of seamless transitional animations of Namco's Soul Calibur and Tekken development teams. Of course, K-1 isn't meant to mimic traditional fighting games in presentation -- and it doesn't in control, either. K 1 world grand prix 2006 ps2 iso download. With nothing more than two chiseled combatants and a buxom card girl onscreen, fighting sims ought to look sharp. So what's with K-1's lethargic brawlers and barely animated ladies who couldn't titillate a death row inmate? An authentic slugfest should also emphasize the punishing force behind simple punches--because, let's face it, without stylish fighting-game-style special moves, plain punches and kicks are all K-1 has to offer. Its spongy blows feel incapable of cracking eye sockets or ending careers, nor are there enough moves to consistently entertain. What you're left with are ugly, repetitive squabbles lacking the thrill of a brutal beat-down. Sure, kickboxing connoisseurs could point to unlockable perks such as the Revival bouts in which you reenact classic matches to earn movie clips, but unless you're a fan, you really won't care. And even the faithful will cry foul when they find the game lacks recognizable American K-1 greats like the beastly Bob Sapp. In the end, K-1's pared-down approach is forgivable, but its bland execution is not. I'm sure the cross-smidgen of gamers who also happen to be fans of obscure mixed martial arts (like Milkman, apparently) will appreciate K-Ts roster of international kick-brawlers and the agonizingly lengthy ceremonial pomp that precedes each fight (even if you flick off the intro movies). But if you're not in that fight club, you're left with a decent basic fighter that doesn't demand much time to master yet doesn't give you much reason to give a crap, either. Give it a rent, at least, to see some brutally fun K.O.s. Unlike a reality-deprived buffoon like Shawn, I can accept the fact that human beings like Ray Sefo, Jerome Le Banner, and Mike Bernardo (of the real-life K-1 League) don't do flying guillotine crotch attacks like his favorite Soul Calibur fantasy-friend, Voldo. Know that K-1 is an arcadey sports sim with real-life characters who don't have 18,000 crazy moves. Once you come to grips with that, you'll find yourself enjoying a well- rounded brawler. My apologies for that….I guess you will all have to settle for a much bigger than usual newsletter for March 2011!!!! I have a ton of stories and info that I want to share with you this month! Enjoy! Training at Iron Dragon SIFU SLOWED DOWN BUT NOT STOPPED! As most of you know by now, I had to finally have surgery on my left knee to repair a torn meniscus. I now face further surgery to fix my right knee and then perhaps a further operation to replace my right hip. This after almost 38 years of training with nothing more than a broken nose and fractured sternum! LOL! I’ve given all this much thought over the last year that I have been forced to the sidelines. Many of the prominent martial artists over the last 30 years have had to undergo hip replacements. Bill Wallace and Chuck Norris come to mind. My own Sifu’s Mick and Martin McNamara also had hip replacements a few years ago.
