27 | Alumni Update Courtney Mikely, Graduate University of Kent How does one go from a shy student, to an outspoken and confident graduate? When you have a network of ambitious people, who are also your family, it almost becomes inevitable.

I joined the Bursary at the age of 17 with little sense of what I wanted to do. All I knew is that I wanted to be the best. The most helpful thing for me was the introduction of my mentors, peer mentor Henry Yanney and professional mentor Marcus Cato. Research shows that when you tell someone your goals, you are more than twice as likely to achieve them. With a mentor, the probability increased for me tenfold. I saw myself being able to drive my ambition, and that was probably most notable at university. In my first two years, I achieved firsts whilst juggling other extracurricular activities in sports, arts and academia. This resulted in me being accepted to study in California for a year which had been my dream from a young age. Just before my year abroad, the Bursary helped me secure a place at Prudential, a top life insurance company, working alongside influential colleagues. I had the opportunity to learn what actuaries do, whilst improving my office skills and showcasing my talent. After my year abroad, I noticed my aspirations swayed away from my degree choice but this led me to work harder to secure a place in the financial field. I have now completed training and I am working with Robotic Process Automation (RPA). Being part of the Bursary has given me the drive for my ambition, the confidence to reach my goals and the ability to help those that follow. My journey has been great so far, but thankfully, it is just the beginning.’
