As the oldest United States scientific organization, dating from 1807, this office has a long history. Today it promotes safe navigation by managing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) nautical chart and oceanographic data collection and information programs. There are four components of OCS: The Coast Survey Development Laboratory develops new and efficient techniques to accomplish Coast Survey missions and to produce new and improved products and services for the maritime community and other coastal users. The Marine Chart Division acquires marine navigational data to construct and maintain nautical charts, Coast Pilots, and related marine products for the United States. The Hydrographic Surveys Division directs programs for ship and shore-based hydrographic survey units and conducts general hydrographic survey operations. The Navigational Services Division is the focal point for Coast Survey customer service activities, concentrating predominately on charting issues, fast-response hydrographic surveys, and Coast Pilot updates. The erosion problem areas are classified as either critical or noncritical and county maps and tables are provided to depict the areas designated critically and noncritically eroded. This report is periodically updated to include additions and deletions. A county index is provided on page 13, which includes the date of the last revision. All information is provided for planning purposes only and the user is cautioned to obtain the most recent erosion areas listing available. Barnett, P.E., Bureau Chief Bureau of Beaches and Coastal Systems June, 2009 Introduction In 1986, pursuant to Sections 161.101 and 161.161, Florida Statutes, the Department of Natural Resources, Division of Beaches and Shores (now the Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Beaches and Coastal Systems) was charged with the responsibility to identify those beaches of the state which are critically eroding and to develop and maintain a comprehensive long-term management plan for their restoration. In 1989, a first list of erosion areas was developed based upon an abbreviated definition of critical erosion. That list included 217.6 miles of critical erosion and another 114.8 miles of noncritical erosion statewide.

That’s where he is.” Autumn 2008 I smiled stiffly. Marathon. A tangible destination that made my brother come alive again. Summer 2008 It had been six years since I heard one of those bits and pieces about my Spring/Summer peripatetic brother Dan that occasionally came my way. Like how he went out to 2008 New Mexico and ran a trailer park outside Chimayó for a while. Another time, someone said he was tending a gas station in Amarillo.     Boaters: Vessel Sewage Restrictions Protect Our Environment Good water quality is essential to a healthy Florida Keys’ marine ecosystem. q Discharging treated or untreated sewage from your boat’s marine head (Marine Sanitation Device [MSD]) into the waters of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is prohibited. q To help prevent unintentional discharges of treated or untreated sewage into the marine environment, MSDs must be secured and locked at all times. Acceptable methods for securing MSDs include, but are not limited, to those approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. (33 CFR 159.7) Pump-out facilities are located throughout the Keys to assist boat operators in adhering to these rules, which help protect people and marine life from potentially harmful vessel sewage discharges.
