Some of the stories that constitute this collection might seem to be very distant from each other, POLYAK but they share an ambition. Farmakovskii’s studies in 1914 (The Archaic Period in Russia) and 1916 (Milesian Vases from Russia), followed by the article of T. N. Knipovich (On the Trade Links of the Greeks with the River Tanais Region in the 7th‐5th Centuries BC) in 19341, the earliest East Greek pottery from native settlements of the steppes of the northern Black Sea has received considerable attention. A catalogue was produced by N.A. Onaiko in 1966, identifying and dating these finds and other pieces discovered in the previous thirty years according to what was then known2. Over the last forty years a few more pieces have come to light but, more importantly, considerable advances have been made both in the dating of East Greek pottery and the identification of centres of production (see Table 1). During the last decade or so this pottery from the northern Black Sea has received attention on a scale hitherto unknown3. This welcome development demonstrates not only the progress made in the study of such pottery but also the problems that it continues to present: academics have retained the use of different chronologies, whilst some publications give insufficient information about new pieces, or what they do give is confusing or contradictory or both. The principal difficulty is methodological: how should we interpret this pottery? It is important to know how the pottery came here ‐ was it as a result of trading relationships with nearby Greek colonies, or was it something else? There are broader implications.

Place Configurations and Italian Electoral Politics under the ‘Second Republic’ John Agnew The Italian Second Republic was meant to have led to a bipolar polity with alternation in national government between conservative and progressive blocs. Such a system it has been claimed would undermine the geographical structure of electoral politics that contributed to party system immobilism in the past. However, in this article I argue that dynamic place configurations are central to how the ‘new’ Italian politics is being constructed. The dominant emphasis on either television or the emergence of ‘politics without territory’ has obscured the importance of this geographical restructuring. New dynamic place configurations are apparent particularly in the South which has emerged as a zone of competition between the main party coalitions and a nationally more fragmented geographical pattern of electoral outcomes. These patterns in turn reflect differential trends in support for party positions on governmental centralization and devolution, geographical patterns of local economic development, and the re-emergence of the North–South divide as a focus for ideological and policy differences between parties and social groups across Italy. Introduction One of the high hopes of the early 1990s in Italy was that following the cleansing of the corruption associated with the party regime of the Cold War period, Italy could become a ‘normal country’ in which bipolar politics of electoral competition between clearly defined coalitions formed before elections, rather than perpetual domination by the political centre, would lead to potential alternation of progressive and conservative forces in national political office and would check the systematic corruption of partitocrazia based on the jockeying for government offices (and associated powers) after elections (Gundle & Parker 1996).

Jauno masīvu, tādu kā Ķengarags, Jugla, Imanta, Zolitūde, Purvciems, Pļavnieki, Ziepniekkalns, u.c. iedzīvotājiem, tiem, kuriem padomju valsts bija iedalījusi dzīvokļus šajos jaunajos masīvos, dzīvokļus atļāva privatizēt, viņiem nav jāmaksā par īri 300 -500 EUR/mēnesī, vēl vairāk – viņi var šos dzīvokļus izīrēt un gūt peļņu no tiem. Visvairāk denacionalizācijas procesā ir cietuši tieši pasaules slavenā Jūgendstila Centra iedzīvotāji, jo viņiem neļāva dzīvokļus privatizēt – lika šķēršļus, uzlauza un demolēja dzīvokļus, salauza un mainīja slēdzenes, atslēdza ūdeni, elektrību un siltumu, dedzināja un šāva, organizācijām vienojoties, neizmaksāja algas, radīja mākslīgus parādus. (Ir dokumentāli pierādījumi). Drīz pēc denacionalizācijas īres maksa Centra dzīvokļos sasniedza 5 LVL/m2. Piem., ja vidēji liels Centra dzīvoklis bija 90 m2, tad īre par to sastādīja 450 -500 LVV/mēnesī plus komunālie maksājumi, kas kopā ar īri sastādīja 600 – 1000 LVL/mēnesī.
