Charles Bernstein’s Louis Zukofsky Hélène Aji Université du Maine (France) Louis Zukofsky: Selected Poems, by Charles Bernstein: Selection, Absorption, Projection. Volumes of Selected Poems are versatile objects that put into question the very nature of authorship. They come in a variety of forms and respond to a whole range of preoccupations. To mention but a few major trends, one thus has first to make a distinction between selections that are of the concerned poet’s own making and selections that arise through external work, often a-posteriori or posthumously once this poet’s corpus has come to completion and can be considered as a more or less coherent body. Spanning the years and circumstances of a career in poetry writing, these latter selections, which are the ficus of this study, respond to a number of demands: notably those of publishers, wanting to provide usable one-volume formats for the greater public, and those of teachers, whose aim is to expose the poetry to the reactions and appreciation of younger readers. -

Degree awarded September 2011 ii © 2011 Rachel Lynn Edford iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Rachel Lynn Edford Doctor of Philosophy Department of English September 2011 Title: “The Step of Iron Feet”: Formal Movements in American World War II Poetry Approved: _______________________________________________ Karen Jackson Ford We have too frequently approached American World War II poetry with assumptions about modern poetry based on readings of the influential British Great War poets, failing to distinguish between WWI and WWII and between the British and American contexts. During the Second World War, the Holocaust and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki obliterated the line many WWI poems reinforced between the soldier’s battlefront and the civilian’s homefront, authorizing for the first time both civilian and soldier perspectives. Conditions on the American homefront—widespread isolationist and anti-Semitic attitudes, America’s late entry into the war, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese internment, and the African American “Double V Campaign” to fight fascism overseas and racism at home—were just some of the volatile conditions poets in the US grappled with during WWII. -

Briggflatts, a Drunk Man, and British
Abstract: This article aims to present new understandings of how place, identity, and text are configured in British modernist poetry, particularly in the extended poem. Focusing chiefly on Basil Bunting’s Briggflatts (1966), the discussion explores this poem’s alignment of geography and history as sources of identity, noting a stark contrast with the kinds of rootlessness more readily associated with the Poundian long poem. Bunting can be seen to marshal a variety of spatio-temporal signifiers to convey a located identity, and it is demonstrated that Hugh MacDiarmid’s A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle (1926) enacts similar processes more explicitly. MacDiarmid and Bunting’s historicised and located writing is briefly contrasted with Louis Zukofsky’s depthless language, which carries conflicting spatial implications. William Carlos Williams’s Paterson is then discussed as representing an American poetics of place that shows key commonalities with Bunting, but works with a distinct conception of history. Ultimately, it is argued that Bunting and MacDiarmid can be viewed as typifying a specifically British modernism, even whilst complicating and interrogating notions of Britishness. Their shared poetics of place are concerned with maintaining roots in the local site, but also asserting Northumbrian and Scottish nationalisms. ‘Local site and historical depth’: Briggflatts, A Drunk Man, and British Modernist Poetics of Place An interesting effect of Basil Bunting’s publishing history is that he has seemed at different times to belong to slightly different literary historical contexts. Viewed as a ‘disciple of Ezra 1 Pound’ for a large part of his career,1 Bunting is the only British writer in Louis Zukofsky’s An ‘Objectivists’ Anthology (1932), his work placed alongside that of American and internationalist émigré modernists: Pound and Zukofsky, as well as T. -

Carl Rakosi, mort centenaire, fut le dernier représentant de ce groupement de poètes connu sous l’appellation d’Objectivistes, et si son œuvre, parmi ceux-ci, est une des plus minces, elle n’en est peut-être pas la moins dense ; de plus, cet homme a montré qu’au regard de ces dénominations passées dans le domaine historique et des maîtres qui l’ont formé, il avait su conserver un esprit critique aiguisé, voire mordant. Un esprit libre, essentiellement, et parfaitement conscient des enjeux, ainsi que de ses propres éventuelles faiblesses ou vertus d’écrivain. Un maître de l’épigramme, avant tout – un œil d’une pénétrante vivacité, accordé à une voix sans grain, très précise, très saine, de cette grande santé qui se communique. Bref, un esprit sachant peser ce qui importe, sachant chiffrer et déchiffrer : adepte d’une facture à la ligne claire, et doué de cette vertu simple qui consiste à ne pas perdre son temps aux complaisances. Né à Berlin en 1903, il passa néanmoins une partie de son enfance en Hongrie jusqu’en 1910, auprès d’une mère dont le souvenir ne lui fut pas très agréable ; son père et sa belle-mère avaient émigré aux États-Unis : celui-là exerça la profession d’horloger-bijoutier, d’abord à Chicago, puis dans une petite ville de l’Indiana. Malgré la modestie de ses revenus, la famille parvint à envoyer le jeune garçon à l’Université (Chicago, puis Wisconsin- Madison), où il commença à écrire, en alternant études (en psychologie, en particulier) et activité professionnelle (dans l’assistance sociale). -

Students will read about the life of Niedecker, the beliefs of the Objectivist poetry movement, and experience watching a short video of Black Hawk Island with a poem read aloud. After the short unit students should have a written paper applying some of the ideas of the Objectivist poets to poems written by Lorine Niedecker. The study unit is designed to meet the following criteria: It is appropriate for general high school students It complies with Wisconsin’s Academic Standards for Reading/Literature at the twelfth grade level. The unit can be rolled into a larger unit on 20th century poetry, Wisconsin writers, or general poetry. It can encompass at least 2 40-minute teaching periods. In the introduction to his 1984 The Random House Book of XXth Century French Poetry, Paul Auster reminds his anglophone reader of the perennial contribution of the French language in general and French literature and poetry in particular to its British and later American counterparts, going back to John Gower and Chaucer. Focusing on the modern period, he claims that “American poetry of the past hundred years would be inconceivable without the French.” From the time of Baudelaire “modern British and American poets have continued to look to France for new ideas” (xxviii). From the early twentieth century, American poets have not only flocked to Paris in search of a cheap living and greater permissiveness, they “have been steadily translating their French counterparts—not simply as a literary exercise, but as an act of discovery and passion” (xxx).
