Inspired by natural growth behaviour, the computional process creates shapes that adapt to their environment. Through kinetic sculptures and transformable objects, I strive to give viewers access to the surprising structures hidden within apparently amorphous space. Nature is generous and inexhaustible, rewarding curiosity with startling insights and an abundance of ever more beautiful mysteries. The pliable tree roots are trained to grow through betel tree trunks which are placed across the gap, until the figs’ roots take root on the other side. Sticks, stones, and other inclusions are placed with the growing bridge. This process can take up to 15 years to complete.     Malaya Journal of Matematik, Vol. S, No. 2, 3321-3322, 2020 https://doi.org/10.26637/MJM0S20/0863 Living root bridges of Meghalaya Bebeto R Sangma 1 and Magdalene Peter 2 Abstract A living root bridge is a type of simple suspension bridge formed of living plant roots by tree shaping. They are common in the southern part of the Northeast Indian state of Meghalaya. They are handmade from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees by the Khasi and Jaintia peoples of the mountainous terrain along the southern part of the Shillong Plateau. Most of the bridges grow on steep slopes of subtropical moist broad leaf forest between 50m and 1150m above sea level. As long as the tree from which it is formed remains healthy, the roots in the bridge can naturally grow thick and strengthen. New roots can grow throughout the tree’s life and must be pruned or manipulated to strengthen the bridge. Without active care, many bridges have decayed or grown wild, becoming unusable. Root bridges have also been observed in the Indian state of Nagaland.
