Abstract Background: This work focuses on plant-based preparations that the Aguaruna Jivaro of Peru give to hunting dogs. Many plants are considered to improve dogs' sense of smell or stimulate them to hunt better, while others treat common illnesses that prevent dogs from hunting. This work places canine ethnoveterinary medicine within the larger context of Aguaruna ethnomedicine, by testing the following hypotheses: H1 -- Plants that the Aguaruna use to treat dogs will be the same plants that they use to treat people and H2 -- Plants that are used to treat both people and dogs will be used for the same illnesses in both cases. Methods: Structured interviews with nine key informants were carried out in 2007, in Aguaruna communities in the Peruvian department of Amazonas. -

A Comparative Study of Ethnobotanical Taxonomies: Swahili and Digo
A Comparative Study of Ethnobotanical Taxonomies: Swahili and Digo Steve Nicolle This paper explores how members of two East African language groups, with similar languages and cultures, classify the plant world. Differences primarily concern which parameters (e.g., size, uses, and longevity) determine how plant species are categorized. I show how linguistically similar classifications can obscure significant differences in folk botanical taxonomies. Introduction The early classic studies from which the present paper has developed began with the seminal ethnoscience work of the cognitive anthropologists Harold Conklin (1954, 1962), Charles Frake (1969), and Ward Goodenough (1957). Later influential ethnobiological taxonomic studies were done by Cecil Brown (1977, 1979), Terence Hays (1976), and especially by Brent Berlin and his co-authors (e.g., Berlin, Breedlove and Raven 1968, 1969, 1973, etc.) and peaking with Berlin's magnum opus (1992). Early methodologies for eliciting ethnobotanical folk taxonomies, now used as a standard, are found in Black (1969) and in Werner and Fenton's "card sorting" (1973); both methods were used in the present study. Later critics refined the endeavor of folk botanical classification as they encountered problems in "intra-cultural variability" among neighbors in the same speech community (e.g., Gal 1973, Pelto and Pelto 1975, Gardner 1976, Headland 1981, 1983, and several other papers in a special 1975 issue of American Ethnologist vol. 2, no. 1, titled "Intra-cultural Variability"). The present author found some of these problems of disagreements between informants as well. This brief study looks at the way plants are classified by speakers of two Northeast Coast Bantu languages, Swahili and Digo. -

Abstract This study presents the species of Primulaceae recorded for the cangas of Serra dos Carajás, Pará state, including morphological descriptions, comments and illustrations. Primulaceae As espécies encontradas na cangas da Serra de Primulaceae apresenta distribuição Carajás caracterizam-se por serem arbusto a pantropical, com aproximadamente 2.500 arvoretas, bissexuais ou unissexuais, com folhas espécies e 58 gêneros (Stevens 2001 em diante) simples, alternas, não estipuladas. Apresentam agrupados em quatro subfamílias: Maesoideae, inflorescências racemosas, flores pediceladas, Myrsinoideae, Primuloideae e Theophrastoideae bractéola única, cálice livre ou fusionado na base (APG IV). Destas, duas ocorrem na Flora do e corola gamopétala. Frugivoria por aves em ISSN 1981-8874 Alchornea triplinervia 9 771981 887003 0 0 1 6 2 (Euphorbiaceae) na Mata Atlântica do Parque Estadual dos Três Picos, estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Ricardo Parrini¹ & José Fernando Pacheco¹ RESUMO: Foram observadas 32 espé- cies de aves consumindo frutos de Alchor- nea triplinervia (Euphorbiaceae) ao lon- go de 13 excursões, entre os anos de 2001 e 2003, empreendidas a duas áreas de Mata Atlântica do Parque Estadual dos Três Picos, sudeste do Brasil. As famílias Tyrannidae, Tityridae, Turdidae e Thrau- pidae destacaram-se pelo mais elevado número de espécies visitantes e por uma maior quantidade de visitas e de frutos con- sumidos. O cruzamento de dados, entre o presente estudo e trabalhos anteriores com Alchor- nea triplinervia e a espécie afim Alchor- nea glandulosa na Mata Atlântica do sudeste do Brasil, revela a importância de aves generalistas, onívoras e insetívoras, pertencentes a estas famílias na dispersão de espécies vegetais do gênero Alchor- nea. During the initial stage of anthesis the flowers are small, with the corolla lobes already open and erect before tube elongation, and the corolla lobe basal appendages are appressed against each other, forming a convex structure at the corolla mouth obstructing the entrance of visitors and pollinators. At the final stage of anthesis, the corolla lobes reflex and become perpendicular to the tube, and their basal appendages become erect, not touching each other, allowing visitors and pollinators to access the corolla tube and the nectar disk. Neobertiera and Sipaneopsis are unique within the tribe Sipaneeae in having indehiscent dry fruits and recent molecular phylogenies positioned them as sister taxa. Sipaneopsis is distinguished from Neobertiera in having flowers consistently homostylous (vs. distylous or rarely tristylous in Neobertiera), stamens inserted at the middle of the corolla tube (vs. at variable positions), and five triangular appendages at the base of each corolla lobe (vs. corolla lobes thickened at base, without appendages). -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The monophyly of Spintharinae is supported in agreement with previous analysis of Theridiidae by Agnarsson and Arnedo et al. We study the relationships of the genera within Spintharinae. Fourteen species in the genera Chrosiothes, Episinus, Spintharus, Stemmops, and Thwaitesia constituted the ingroup, while five species from the genera Euryopis and Dipoena (Hadrotarsinae), as well as Latrodectus and Steatoda (Latrodectinae), served as outgroup taxa. The character matrix in- cluded 49 morphological characters. Parsimony analyses using several character weighting strategies supported the mono- phyly of Spintharinae with Stemmops as sister to a clade that includes the remaining ingroup taxa. Chrosiothes emerged as sister to Episinus + Spintharus + Thwaitesia which formed a polytomy. The equally weighted, successive weighted, and preferred implied weight topologies, were all logically consistent. A key to the genera of Spintharinae and diagnoses for each genus are given. -

It belongs to the monophyletic tribe Artocarpeae, whose only other members include two small neotropical genera. This study aimed to reconstruct the phylogeny, estimate diver- gence dates and infer ancestral ranges of Artocarpeae, especially Artocarpus, to better understand spatial and tem- poral evolutionary relationships and dispersal patterns in a geologically complex region. Methods To investigate the phylogeny and biogeography of Artocarpeae, this study used Bayesian and maximum likelihood approaches to analyze DNA sequences from six plastid and two nuclear regions from 75% of Artocarpus species, both neotropical Artocarpeae genera, and members of all other Moraceae tribes.
