Historisch is dat natuurlijk onmogelijk. Bovendien is het overbodig omdat een geanimeerde en dus fictieve infraroodcamera weinig nieuwe informatie toevoegt. Maar geen mens die erover valt omdat alles er zo levensecht uitziet. Er is geen enkele camerabeweging aan Walking with Beasts te pas gekomen, maar toch lijkt de serie op een flitsende Hollywood-film. Zelfs met de meest geavanceerde animatietechnieken kwam er bloed, zweet en tranen kijken bij de afwerking. De eerste aflevering van de serie zet de Aarde neer zoals die bestond in de eerste vijftien miljoen jaar na het uitsterven van de dinosauriërs: een wereld waarin regenwouden overheersen en zoogdieren langzaamaan de dominante gewervelde diersoorten worden. In de eerste aflevering wordt een familie van het geslacht Leptictidium gevolgd. Deze ratachtige dieren moeten overleven in het wereldomvattende woud. Gevaren dreigen overal, zoals reuzenloopvogels Gastornis , de primitieve walvisachtige Ambulocetus en reuzenmieren Titanomyrma giganteum. Een andere bedreiging is het vulkanisch meer, dat centraal in het regenwoud van de familie Lepticidia ligt. In de tweede aflevering staat de vleesetende walvis Basilosaurus centraal. Een vrouwelijk dier wordt gevolgd van de kuststreken van Pakistan, waar de kijker kennismaakt met de eerste grote zoogdieren zoals Andrewsarchus en Embolotherium , via de uitgestrekte Tethys-zee naar de Nijldelta, waar primitieve olifanten Moeritherium en apen Apidium leven. Naast de dieren van het Laat-Eoceen is er ook aandacht voor de klimaatveranderingen van deze periode. Doordat Antarctica geleidelijk aan begint te bevriezen, veranderen de oceaanstromingen. Dit heeft ingrijpende gevolgen voor het leven in de zee en het klimaat op Aarde, dat koeler en droger wordt. In deze aflevering worden zoon en moeder Indricotherium gevolgd. Indricoterium , een hoornloze neushoornachtige , was het grootste landzoogdier ooit. Het tweetal leeft op de droge vlaktes van Centraal-Azië samen met reusachtige varkenachtige entelodonten , de aan paarden verwante chalicotheria en roofdieren als Hyaenodon en de beerhond Cynodictis. In de vierde aflevering wordt er een groep van de eerste mensachtige Australopithecus gevolgd. Er is veel aandacht voor de reeds ingewikkelde samenleving van deze primitieve mensen en de gevaren die Australopithecus bedreigen op de Afrikaanse savannes zoals de sabeltandkat Dinofelis en de agressieve olifant Deinotherium. Deze aflevering behandelt de dieren uit het Vroeg- Pleistoceen van de pampa's van Zuid-Amerika. Aangezien dit continent heel lang geïsoleerd was, ontwikkelden zich in Zuid-Amerika verschillende vreemde gewervelde diersoorten zoals het geslurfde hoefdier Macrauchenia , het reuzengordeldier Doedicurus en de looproofvogel Phorusrhacos. In de vijfde aflevering wordt een groep van de sabeltandkat Smilodon gevolgd. De leider van de groep wordt "Halftand" genoemd. Twee andere mannelijke Smilodons willen de groep overnemen. Later, als een van de mannetjes vermoord is door een reuzenluiaard , komt "Halftand" terug en herneemt hij zijn positie als leider van de groep.     Chapter 1 Paleontology as a science Key points • The key value of paleontology has been to show us the history of life through deep time – without fossils this would be largely hidden from us. • Paleontology has strong relevance today in understanding our origins, other distant worlds, climate and biodiversity change, the shape and tempo of evolution, and dating rocks. • Paleontology is a part of the natural sciences, and a key aim is to reconstruct ancient life. • Reconstructions of ancient life have been rejected as pure speculation by some, but careful consideration shows that they too are testable hypotheses and can be as scientifi c as any other attempt to understand the world. • Science consists of testing hypotheses, not in general by limiting itself to absolute cer- tainties like mathematics. • Classical and medieval views about fossils were often magical and mystical. • Observations in the 16th and 17th centuries showed that fossils were the remains of ancient plants and animals. • By 1800, many scientists accepted the idea of extinction. • By 1830, most geologists accepted that the Earth was very old. • By 1840, the major divisions of deep time, the stratigraphic record, had been established by the use of fossils. • By 1840, it was seen that fossils showed direction in the history of life, and by 1860 this had been explained by evolution. • Research in paleontology has many facets, including fi nding new fossils and using quan- titative methods to answer questions about paleobiology, paleogeography, macroevolu- tion, the tree of life and COPYRIGHTEDdeep time. The BBC Trust is the governing body of the BBC and it is our responsibility to get the best out of the BBC for licence fee payers. As part of this commitment, we carry out an in- depth review of each of the BBC’s services at least once every five years. In this report we review the BBC Red Button service. 2. BBC Red Button (known as BBCi until 2008) is the BBC’s interactive television service. It provides viewers with a range of video, audio, pictures, text and applications accessible through their digital televisions and it replaces Ceefax (the BBC’s analogue teletext service) as digital switchover takes place. 3. The Trust sets out what it expects from each of the BBC’s services in a published service licence. Our review had three main aims: first, to assess how well BBC Red Button is performing against the commitments set out in its service licence; second, to consider the service’s future direction; and, third, to determine whether amendments to the existing service licence are necessary.
