The sole defeat was a 2-1 loss to Zenit in the 2008 UEFA Super Cup, played on neutral territory in Monaco. Form guide • United have won all four of their UEFA Europa League home games this season, scoring 12 goals in the process while conceding just one. • Rostov have not won in their last five European away fixtures (D3 L2). • United got to the last 16 in 2015/16, but the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League remains the only major UEFA trophy they have never won. Continental champions in 1968, 1999 and 2008, the Red Devils lifted the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1991. • The closest they came to winning the UEFA Cup was reaching the last eight in 1984/85, losing on penalties to Videoton. • Rostov are making their first appearance in the spring phase of a European competition. This is the 14th fixture of their longest European campaign to date, UEFA Champions League assignments included. Links and trivia • The journey from Rostov to Manchester is around 3,000km. • This game is taking place the day after Paul Pogba's 24th birthday. • One of 12 Swedish players still involved in the round of 16, United's Zlatan Ibrahimović is dreaming of playing in the UEFA Europa League final in his nation's capital, Stockholm. • Rostov's Marko Dević and United's Henrikh Mkhitaryan were team-mates at Shakhtar Donetsk in 2012/13. • Rostov's Christian Noboa and United's Antonio Valencia are international team-mates with Ecuador. • United's Marcos Rojo played in Russia for Spartak Moskva from 2011 to 2012. • United and Anderlecht are the only two clubs at this stage who also reached the round of 16 in 2015/16. The coaches • José Mourinho took over as United boss last summer. Having made his name winning the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League with Porto, he landed Europe's top club prize again with Internazionale Milano as well as three Premier League titles during two stints at Chelsea. • In Mourinho's last foray in this competition, he guided Porto to the 2003 UEFA Cup final, where they edged Celtic 3- 2 in Seville. • Ivan Danilyants took over at Rostov in September 2016, having been on the club's coaching staff since December 2014. He played in his native Turkmenistan and Moldova, and was in charge of a number of Moldovan sides – and the national team – before joining Rostov. Penalty shoot-outs • United's record in three UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W1 L2: L 5-4 A v Videoton (1984/85 UEFA Cup quarter-finals) L 4-3 A v Torpedo Moskva (1992/93 UEFA Cup first round) W 6-5 N v Chelsea (2007/08 UEFA Champions League final) • Rostov have yet to feature in a UEFA penalty shoot-out. 4 Manchester United FC - FC Rostov Thursday 16 March 2017 - 21.05CET (20.05 local time) Match press kit Old Trafford, Manchester Team facts Manchester United FC Formed: 1878 Nickname: The Red Devils UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • European Cup (3): 1968, 1999, 2008, (2009), (2011) • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (1): 1991 • UEFA Super Cup (1): 1991, (1999), (2008) • European/South American Cup (1): (1968), 1999 Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 20 (2013) FA Cup: 12 (2016) League Cup: 4 (2010) Ten-year European record (UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2015/16: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2014/15: did not take part in UEFA competition 2013/14: UEFA Champions League quarter-finals 2012/13: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2011/12: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2010/11: UEFA Champions League runners-up 2009/10: UEFA Champions League quarter-finals 2008/09: UEFA Champions League runners-up 2007/08: UEFA Champions League winners 2006/07: UEFA Champions League semi-finals Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 10-0: United v Anderlecht 26/09/56, European Champion Clubs' Cup preliminary round second leg • Biggest away win 0-6: Shamrock Rovers v United 25/09/57, European Champion Clubs' Cup preliminary round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 2-3: three times, most recently v Athletic Club 08/03/12, UEFA Europa League round of 16 first leg 1-2 twice, most recently Manchester United v Real Madrid 05/03/13, UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg 0-1: on seven occasions, most recently v CFR Cluj 05/12/12, UEFA Champions League group stage • Heaviest away defeat 5-0: Sporting CP v United 18/03/64, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final second leg UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 4-0: United v Feyenoord 24/11/16, group stage • Biggest away win 0-2: Ajax v United 16/02/12, round of 32 first leg • Heaviest home defeat 2-3: United v Athletic Club (see above) 1-2: United v AFC Ajax 23/02/12, round of 32 second leg • Heaviest away defeat 5 Manchester United FC - FC Rostov Thursday 16 March 2017 - 21.05CET (20.05 local time) Match press kit Old Trafford, Manchester 3-0: Juventus v United 03/11/76, second round second leg FC Rostov Formed: 1930 Nickname: Zholto-Sinie (Yellow-Blues) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • None Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) Russian Cup: 1 (2014) Ten-year European record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2015/16: did not take part in UEFA competition 2014/15: play-offs 2013/14: did not take part in UEFA competition 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA competition 2011/12: did not take part in UEFA competition 2010/11: did not take part in UEFA competition 2009/10: did not take part in UEFA competition 2008/09: did not take part in UEFA competition 2007/08: did not take part in UEFA competition 2006/07: did not take part in UEFA competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 4-0: Rostov v Sparta Praha 16/02/17, UEFA Europa League round of 32 first leg • Biggest away win 0-2: Anderlecht v Rostov 03/08/16, UEFA Champions League third qualifying round second leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-4: Rostov v Juventus 28/07/99, UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-final first leg • Heaviest away defeat 5-0: Bayern München v Rostov 13/09/16, UEFA Champions League group stage UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 4-0: Rostov v Sparta Praha (see above) • Biggest away win N/A • Heaviest home defeat N/A • Heaviest away defeat 2-0: Trabzonzpor v Rostov 21/08/14, UEFA Europa League play-offs first leg 6 Manchester United FC - FC Rostov Thursday 16 March 2017 - 21.05CET (20.05 local time) Match press kit Old Trafford, Manchester Squad list Manchester United FC Current season All-time UEL League UEL UEFA No.

What happened on 29 May 1985 at the Heysel stadium in Brussels was the darkest hour in the history of the UEFA competitions. Disaster struck the final of the Champion Clubs’ Cup between Juventus and Liverpool before a ball had even been kicked, leaving 39 spectators dead and injuring many more during what should have been a celebration of football. Whilst this tragedy could have called into question the future of the major European football competitions, particularly the Champion Clubs’ Cup, it soon became clear that defeatism was not the best way to pay tribute to the victims.

However, EURO 2008 convinced me that it was a good idea. Once again, the tournament illustrated the extraordinary passion generated by national team football and gave rise to such a fantastic party atmosphere that I felt it was only right for the tournament to be extended to more countries, to let even more supporters take part and to spread the excitement and party atmosphere far and wide across the continent. I also felt that the emotion of the tournament should be heightened by adding a direct knockout round for the last 16 in the competition and by ensuring that all the group matches, or the vast majority of them at least, would be crucial, by allowing the best third-placed teams through to the next round. The quality of the matches we saw during EURO 2008 also confirmed the high technical level of European football, and teams like England, Scotland and IN THIS ISSUE Denmark, or even Serbia and Ukraine – to name but a few – would certainly not UEFA Cup groups 03 have reduced the quality of the tournament.

  • Globalization and the Concentration of Money and Success in European Football
Financial Inequality among Firms: Globalization and the Concentration of Money and Success in European Football Stefan Leggey Steffen L¨ohrz June 14, 2019 Abstract Football has an enormous following in Europe with more than 100 million fans in the big five European markets alone and numerous more across the continent. It is also in- sightful from an economics point of view. At the core, it represents a market in which all firms compete domestically and a small subset of them sells its products and services on an international market as well. Furthermore, football is characterized by workers of dif- ferent skill level, the best of which are highly mobile across countries. In the present study, we examine two features of this market. Using a novel data set, we first document the large and increasing financial inequality among European football clubs. Subsequently, we show how strongly the inequality in financial means correlates with clubs' performance and results. JEL Classification: firm inequality, football, labor mobility Keywords: F22, J44, J61, L83 y Stefan Legge, University of St.Gallen, Department of Economics, SIAW Institute, Bodanstrasse 8, CH- 9000 St.Gallen, Switzerland. (e-mail: steff[email protected]) 1 Introduction Football is more popular than any other sport in the world.
