THE whole of these inscriptions were copied with great care, and the same care has been extended to the printing of them; it is therefore hoped that no errors of an important character will appear in any portion of the work. A short note, descriptive of the style of the monument in regard to its shape or ornamenta tion, generally precedes the inscription. "Where no note occurs, the stone is plain. Dotted gaps in the inscriptions show where space has been left in the stones for the insertion of other names at a future time. A short line separates the inscriptions, and each one is comprised within inverted commas. HENEY THO? WAKE. BBIGHAM. (13. 7. 76.) THIS large stone is set about four feet in the ground, as if standing in a pit, and built round about to allow of its being seen and read, " Sacred to the Memory of John Nawell of Brigham, Mason, who departed this Life the 8th of January 182% aged 60 years. Also of Nancy his Wife daughter of Thomas & Ann Dixon, who died the 10th of April, 1823, aged 71 years. Also of Joseph their Son who died the 11th of July 1828, aged 33 years. Also of Isaac their Son who died the 18th of January 1832 aged 34 years. Also of Elizabeth his Wife who died the 30th of January, 1831 aged 29 years." The top ornamented, and on an urn Btanding on a book is inscribed, " Know thyself." On the opposite one, " Consider thy latter end"; and on a scroll between, "Do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with thy God." "Here lies the Body of John Middleton of Brigham. Buried April the 5th A.D. 1T33, Aged 39." " In Memory of • William son of John and Mary Jane Stockdale who died January 28th" 1864 Aged 1 year and 5 months. John their son who died February 4th 1870, Aged 8 months. Sophia their Daughter who died December 17th. 1874, aged 1 year and 11 months.5' " Here lies the Body of John Walker of Grill- brow who died the 7th of August 1740 Aged 86... Mary Daughter of John & Mary Wal ker wife of Daniel Fearon of Ullock died April ye 22th. 1716 Aged 26." 2 " In Memory of Martha Penny who died Janu ary 22nd 1802 in the 50th Year of her Age." " In Memory of Joseph Bell who died on the 31st Day of March, 1857, Aged 59 Years. Also of Hannah the Wife of the above Joseph Bell of High Walton, formerly of Brigham Parsonage, who died on the 15th Day of July 1839, Aged 61 Years. William the Son of Joseph and Han nah Bell, who died on the 11th day of February 1831, aged 3 years. Also of Ann their Daughter who died on the 22d of February 1831 aged 6 years. Also of James their Son who died on the 9th day of June 1840, aged 7 Weeks." "Elizabeth Harding Walker: Born, October 12th, 1852. Died, August 13th, 1857. Sarah Harding Walker Born 24th, October 1858, Died 6th Dec1: 1861." At the hack of this last one is an ancient stone trough, into which the upright part of a cross or memorial stone probably once fitted. The following are placed against the north wall ;— " In Memory of Thomas, the Son of Robert and Mary Blake, of Brigham Vicarage, who died Nov1: 23rd 1785 Aged 20 years. Robert Blake died Jan? 5th 1800, Aged 83 years. Also of Mary his Wife who died in the Isle of Man Jan? 2nd 1823. Aged 90 years." On a red sandstone, surmounted by an hour glass :— "In Memory of Thomas Downs late of Mary- .Port, who died the 27th of Sept1:..1790 Aged 84 Years.. Mary his Wife died the 30th of July 1757 Aged 51 years." 3 On a red sandstone, built in the wall and set in a trough:— " Here lies y° Body of Henry Harrison of Sea- ton who died April ye 21st 1714 Aged 44 (?) [the latter figure indistinct] years. Also Ann his Wife died March y° 15th 1714. Aged 35 years." " Erected by Joseph Harrison their Son." Portion of a stone fixed to the wall, near the ground :— " ...e lies ye Body of Mr. [Ric]hard Head of Brandl who died May ye 1749 aged 34 years." On a fragmentary stone, beautifully cut in large capitals :— * « HERE LIETH THE BODY OF ALICE- FISHER • WIFE OF RICH[A]RD • FISHER OF MO[ORE]SIDE WHO WAS [BURIE]D 1 JrlJii oU Anothei* similar, but fragmentary:— * " ROBERT AND IANE CHILDREN OF JOHN LAWRENCE OF BRIG-HAM BURIED APRILL THE 3 • 1699." * 11 Henry Son of Mr Thomas Crakeplace of Brigham. Born Ianuary the 6th 1718 Buried here March ye 24 • 1724 " *" THE BODY OF M* EDMOND HAR RINGTON BYRIED IAN 6 1697" * " Barbara daughter of Mr Roger Flem ing Uicar Born September 27 • 1705 Buried Here August 3? 1717." NOTE.—All those inscriptions against which an asterisk is placed were probably taken up from the floor during the restoration of the anoient edifice in 1864, and placed outside against the north wall, where they now stand. 4 * " HERE HONOVR . AGE AND PIETY ALL IN ONE GRAVE TOGETHER LY, IN THIS MAN WHOM HEAVEN DID REMOVE FROM LIFE ON EARTH TO LIVE ABOVE HE WAS A MINISTER, THAT STOOD FAST IN HIS RELIGION TO THE LAST LIKE AN HOVSE FOVNDED ON A HOOK, HE DID ENDVRE THE FORCE AND SHOCK OF ALL TEMPTATIONS AND STILL HE CAME OF FROM ALL VICTORIOVSLY HE IN HIS LIFE TIME OFT WOVLD SAY WHILE WATCHING, LORD TAKE ME AWAY. HENRY STEPHENSON VICAR OF BRIGHAM DEPARTED THIS LIFE IANVARY 19 . 1704 » Some letters cut away from the commencement of each line, all along the edge of the stone, have been supplied; and the following is the same epitaph modernized:— " Here honour, age, and piety, All in one grave together lie, In this man whom heaven did remove From life on earth to live above. He was a minister that stood fast In his religion to the last; Like a house, founded on a rock, He did endure the force and shock Of all temptations; and still he Came off: from all victoriously. 5 He in his life time oft Would say, While watching, • Lord, take me away.' Mr. Henry Stephenson, Yicar of Brigham, Departed this Life January 19, 1704." The following stone stands a little from the wall:— " Sacred to the Memory of Joseph Sproat who died December 5th 1808 in the 65th ye°ar of his age. Elizabeth his Wife died April 23d, 1825 aged 77 Years. Jane "the Wife of Matthew Sproat their Son; She died December 17th 1816 aged 36 Years. Margaret their Daughter died Nov. 16th 1815 aged 42 Years. Also of the above named Matthew Sproat who died September 16th 1848, aged 64 Years " "Sacred to the memory of John the Son of John and Sarah Oaird of May Field who died Sep. 10th 1810, Aged 10 years. Also of John Caird, who departed this Life July 20th 1825, Aged 72 years. Also of Sarah his Wife who died January the 9th 1831 Aged 72 Years." " In Memory of John Head, who died at Harrington, July 11th 1831 aged 30 years. Also Phebe, his Wife who died at Cockermouth Dec. 17th 1873 aged 75 years. Also Jonathan Head Son of the above, died Oct. 13th 1873 Aged 29 years, also Mary Head, died Jan. 9th 1872 aged 41 years." " Erected to the Memory of Samuel Johnston, Woollen Weaver of Oockermouth, who died Nov* 15th 1851, Aged 34 years. Also of Elizabeth Oagg his Grandmother who died April 28th 1849 Aged 89 Years." 6 '1 In Memory of Eleanor the daughter of John and Mary Ann Barnes, of Cockermouth, who died July 4th, 1866 Aged 19 years and 11 months. This lovely bud, so young and fair Called forth by early doom, Came but to show how sweet a flower In Paradise would bloom. Also Sarah their Daughter who died April 16th, 1854, aged 10 months. Also Jonathan their Son who died May 14th 1855 aged 1 year." " Blessed are the dead that die in. the Lord." " In Memory of William Hartley of Eaglesfield Cragg, who departed this life October 15th 1875 in the 69th Year of his age. Eleanor, Wife of William Hartley of Eaglesfield Cragg, who died April 25th 1870, aged 63 Years. Also William, their Son who died April 25th 1832, aged 5 Months. John Robert their Son, who died June 16th 1860, aged 19 Years. Jane their Daughter, who died April 19th 1862. aged 13 years. William their Son, who died Feb. 10th 1849. Aged 3 years." On the base of a white marble cross, with the space enclosed by a neat palisade :—> " In Memory of Ann Wren wife of John Wren of Cockermouth who died July 5th 1860. Jane their Daughter died Dec1; 25th 1863." On the base of another white marble ci'oss adjoining, the space being enclosed by a dwarf wall with festoons of iron chains suspended from small obelisk shaped stone posts:— "In Memory of Joseph Wren who died June 30th 1867. Elizabeth Wren died Oct1; 14th 1867." , r On a stone, surmounted by the Arms of the Brown family, with motto, " Goodness is greatness " :— " Iii memory of Isaac Brown of Cockermouth who died on the 16th of June 1833 aged 50 years Also of Mary his beloved Wife who died on the 15th of March 1833, aged 42 years.
