PEEFACE.

THE whole of these inscriptions were copied with great care, and the same care has been extended to the printing of them; it is therefore hoped that no errors of an important character will appear in any portion of the work.

A short note, descriptive of the style of the monument in regard to its shape or ornamenta­ tion, generally precedes the inscription. "Where no note occurs, the stone is plain.

Dotted gaps in the inscriptions show where space has been left in the stones for the insertion of other names at a future time.

A short line separates the inscriptions, and each one is comprised within inverted commas.

BBIGHAM. (13. 7. 76.)

THIS large stone is set about four feet in the ground, as if standing in a pit, and built round about to allow of its being seen and read, " Sacred to the Memory of John Nawell of Brigham, Mason, who departed this Life the 8th of January 182% aged 60 years. Also of Nancy his Wife daughter of Thomas & Ann Dixon, who died the 10th of April, 1823, aged 71 years. Also of Joseph their Son who died the 11th of July 1828, aged 33 years. Also of Isaac their Son who died the 18th of January 1832 aged 34 years. Also of Elizabeth his Wife who died the 30th of January, 1831 aged 29 years." The top ornamented, and on an urn Btanding on a book is inscribed, " Know thyself." On the opposite one, " Consider thy latter end"; and on a scroll between, "Do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with thy God."

"Here lies the Body of John Middleton of Brigham. Buried April the 5th A.D. 1T33, Aged 39."

" In Memory of • William son of John and Mary Jane Stockdale who died January 28th" 1864 Aged 1 year and 5 months. John their son who died February 4th 1870, Aged 8 months. Sophia their Daughter who died December 17th. 1874, aged 1 year and 11 months.5'

" Here lies the Body of John Walker of Grill- brow who died the 7th of August 1740 Aged 86... Mary Daughter of John & Mary Wal­ ker wife of Daniel Fearon of Ullock died April ye 22th. 1716 Aged 26." 2

" In Memory of Martha Penny who died Janu­ ary 22nd 1802 in the 50th Year of her Age."

" In Memory of Joseph Bell who died on the 31st Day of March, 1857, Aged 59 Years. Also of Hannah the Wife of the above Joseph Bell of High Walton, formerly of Brigham Parsonage, who died on the 15th Day of July 1839, Aged 61 Years. William the Son of Joseph and Han­ nah Bell, who died on the 11th day of February 1831, aged 3 years. Also of Ann their Daughter who died on the 22d of February 1831 aged 6 years. Also of James their Son who died on the 9th day of June 1840, aged 7 Weeks."

"Elizabeth Harding Walker: Born, October 12th, 1852. Died, August 13th, 1857. Sarah Harding Walker Born 24th, October 1858, Died 6th Dec1: 1861." At the hack of this last one is an ancient stone trough, into which the upright part of a cross or memorial stone probably once fitted.

The following are placed against the north wall ;— " In Memory of Thomas, the Son of Robert and Mary Blake, of Brigham Vicarage, who died Nov1: 23rd 1785 Aged 20 years. Robert Blake died Jan? 5th 1800, Aged 83 years. Also of Mary his Wife who died in the Isle of Man Jan? 2nd 1823. Aged 90 years."

On a red sandstone, surmounted by an hour glass :— "In Memory of Thomas Downs late of Mary- .Port, who died the 27th of Sept1:..1790 Aged 84 Years.. Mary his Wife died the 30th of July 1757 Aged 51 years." 3

On a red sandstone, built in the wall and set in a trough:— " Here lies y° Body of Henry Harrison of Sea- ton who died April ye 21st 1714 Aged 44 (?) [the latter figure indistinct] years. Also Ann his Wife died March y° 15th 1714. Aged 35 years." " Erected by Joseph Harrison their Son."

Portion of a stone fixed to the wall, near the ground :— " ...e lies ye Body of Mr. [Ric]hard Head of Brandl who died May ye 1749 aged 34 years."

NOTE.—All those inscriptions against which an asterisk is placed were probably taken up from the floor during the restoration of the anoient edifice in 1864, and placed outside against the north wall, where they now stand. 4

HENRY STEPHENSON VICAR OF BRIGHAM DEPARTED THIS LIFE IANVARY 19 . 1704 » Some letters cut away from the commencement of each line, all along the edge of the stone, have been supplied; and the following is the same epitaph modernized:— " Here honour, age, and piety, All in one grave together lie, In this man whom heaven did remove From life on earth to live above. He was a minister that stood fast In his religion to the last; Like a house, founded on a rock, He did endure the force and shock Of all temptations; and still he Came off: from all victoriously. 5 He in his life time oft Would say, While watching, • Lord, take me away.' The following stone stands a little from the wall:— " Sacred to the Memory of Joseph Sproat who died December 5th 1808 in the 65th ye°ar of his age. Elizabeth his Wife died April 23d, 1825 aged 77 Years. Jane "the Wife of Matthew Sproat their Son; She died December 17th 1816 aged 36 Years. Margaret their Daughter died Nov. 16th 1815 aged 42 Years. Also of the above named Matthew Sproat who died September 16th 1848, aged 64 Years "

"Sacred to the memory of John the Son of John and Sarah Oaird of May Field who died Sep. 10th 1810, Aged 10 years. Also of John Caird, who departed this Life July 20th 1825, Aged 72 years. Also of Sarah his Wife who died January the 9th 1831 Aged 72 Years."

" In Memory of John Head, who died at Harrington, July 11th 1831 aged 30 years. Also Phebe, his Wife who died at Dec. 17th 1873 aged 75 years. Also Jonathan Head Son of the above, died Oct. 13th 1873 Aged 29 years, also Mary Head, died Jan. 9th 1872 aged 41 years." " Erected to the Memory of Samuel Johnston, Woollen Weaver of Oockermouth, who died Nov* 15th 1851, Aged 34 years. Also of Elizabeth Oagg his Grandmother who died April 28th 1849 Aged 89 Years." 6

This lovely bud, so young and fair Called forth by early doom, Came but to show how sweet a flower In Paradise would bloom. Also Sarah their Daughter who died April 16th, 1854, aged 10 months. Also Jonathan their Son who died May 14th 1855 aged 1 year." " Blessed are the dead that die in. the Lord."

" In Memory of William Hartley of Eaglesfield Cragg, who departed this life October 15th 1875 in the 69th Year of his age. Eleanor, Wife of William Hartley of Eaglesfield Cragg, who died April 25th 1870, aged 63 Years. Also William, their Son who died April 25th 1832, aged 5 Months. John Robert their Son, who died June 16th 1860, aged 19 Years. Jane their Daughter, who died April 19th 1862. aged 13 years. William their Son, who died Feb. 10th 1849. Aged 3 years."

On the base of a white marble cross, with the space enclosed by a neat palisade :—> " In Memory of Ann Wren wife of John Wren of Cockermouth who died July 5th 1860. Jane their Daughter died Dec1; 25th 1863."

On the base of another white marble ci'oss adjoining, the space being enclosed by a dwarf wall with festoons of iron chains suspended from small obelisk shaped stone posts:— "In Memory of Joseph Wren who died June 30th 1867. Elizabeth Wren died Oct1; 14th 1867." , r On a stone, surmounted by the Arms of the Brown family, with motto, " Goodness is greatness " :— " Iii memory of Isaac Brown of Cockermouth who died on the 16th of June 1833 aged 50 years Also of Mary his beloved Wife who died on the 15th of March 1833, aged 42 years. Also of Robert their Son who died in Febr. 1839 at Ponce, Porto Rico aged 21 years. Also of Isaac their Son who died the 28th Nov. 1843. Aged 26 Years."

On a neat stone Monument, surmounted by an ornamental cross, is the following gilt inscription, cut on an inlaid slab of polished grey marble:— "In affectionate Remembrance of Fanny the beloved and devoted Wife of William Miller who died at Croft Hill, Oct1: 31st 1867 in her 25th year. Them also that sleep in Jesus shall God bring with him." On another small cross beside it is inscribed:—> "Henrietta Miller Ob* Feby 13th 1866 Aged 3 Mo*» The whole space is neatly planted with flowers, and enclosed by a dwarf wall and festoons of bronzed iron chains.

Bound about a floreated cross, within a Gothic quatrefoil, is inscribed "The Spirit shall return unto God, who gave it."—and underneath:— "In Memory of William Timstall, of , who died August 5. 1872, Aged 60 Years. Also of Sarah Tunstall, his Wife who died Aug. 2 . 1873, aged 64 years. Also of Jane the Daughter of William & Sarah Tunstall, who died December 7*!1 1849 aged 5 years.

A few short years of sorrow past We'll reach that happy shore When death-divided friends at last Shall meet to part no more " 8

" In Memory of Alice, the beloved Wife, of James Weatherston, of Greysouthen who died December 13th, 1871, aged 53 years. Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord

Also Abigail, the beloved Wife of Thomas Weatherston, of Greysouthen who died April 23rd, 1873 aged 26 years, interred at ."

"In affectionate Remembrance of James Irving, of the Goat, who died Sept1; 3rd 1871 aged 54 years. Also Ann his wife who died Nov. 2d 1873, aged 52 years. Thomas, Son of the above died Nov1: 30th 1845, aged 1 year. Mary Daughter of the above died Septf 5th 1847 aged 6 years."

" In Memory of George Smails, of Cockermouth, who died March 18th 1865, aged 52 years ... Also Mary Esther, Daughter of the above who died April 29th 1859, aged 1 year. Also Margaret Jane, Daughter of the above who died March 2nd 1860, aged 2 months. Also James Son of the above who died Feby 21st 1862, aged 9 years. Also Joseph Son of the above who died March 26th 1862, aged 6 years. My days are past, my purposes are broken off— That life is long, which answers life's great end."

"In Memory of Joseph Stoddart, of Great Broughton, who died May 24th 1869, aged 71 years. Sarah the wife of Joseph Stoddart, who died July 16th 1868, aged 73 years James the son of Joseph and Sarah Stoddart, of Great Brough­ ton, who died Sept. 4th 1844, aged 21 years. Also Ann their Daughter who died April 3rd 1867, Aged 47 Years." • • ' 9 " In Memory of Thomas France Collins of Cockermouth who died April 12th 1858 aged 31 Years. In Memory of Thomas the Son of John and Mary Ann Mark of Cockermotith who died the 12th of June 1862, aged 6 Weeks. Also William John their Son, who died August 31st 1864, aged 11 Weeks. Also George their Son, who died May 17th 1866, aged 17 Days."

The following is of fine white marble:— On a scroll under a bouquet of flowers is " GOD IS LOYE " " John Mark who died April 28th 1875, aged 50 Years Thomas Mark died June 16th 1862 aged 6 weeks. William John Mark died August 30th 1864 Aged 11 weeks; George Mark died May 17th 1866 aged 17 Days."

On a small stone:—• " I. L. Watson Oh. 30 Mar. 1844 M. 6 Months "

The following is enclosed about with an ornamental iron railing:— "Sacred to the Memory of Mary Wood Daughter of Fletcher and Ann Pearson who departed this life on the 3rd of Feb1? 1858 in the 61st year of her age. Also in Memory of the above Fletcher Pearson who departed this life at Oockermouth on the 22nd of Oct1: 1860 in the 91st year of his age. Ann the Wife, of Fletcher Pearson of Oockermouth, and Mother of the above who departed this life on the 12th of Jan? 1859 in the 85th year of her age."

Under an ornamental perforated cross:— " Sacred to the Memory of Henry Pearson, who died at Cockermouth, March 14th, 1858, aged 82 years. Also of Ann his Wife who died February 24th, 1846 aged 67 years; and was interred at Cockermouth." B 10

" Life how short. Eternity how long. Erected in memory of Thomas Holliday of Great Broughton, who died February 20th, 1850, aged 66 years. Also of Rachel Holhday his Wife, who died the 18th day of August 1859 aged 73 years. Also of Daniel, Soil of Thomas and Rachel Holli­ day, who died at the Brewery, Great Broughton, 28th of November 1862, and was interred here, aged 38 years. In the midst of life we are in Death." " In Memory of Margaret the Wife of Hodgson Saul of Old Field Mill, who died March 3rd, 1871 aged 31 years. Also two of their children, Ann and John died in infancy "

" Sacred to the Memory of Henry Wallace of Graysouthen who departed this Life Oct, 13th 1824, Aged 54 Years. Also of Jane his Wife who died July 3rd 1832, Aged 64 Years. Also of Eliz­ abeth Robinson their Daughter who died Feb1? the 12th 1844, Aged 37 Years. Also of John their Son who died Jan? 2nd 1874 Aged 71 Years."

The following is surmounted by a small perforated cross :— '(In Memory of Johnston Dixon of Little Brough­ ton, who died Dec. 11th. 1860, aged 32 years. Also of Mary Ann, Daughter of Johnston and Jane Dixon, who died Sep. 13th 1857, aged 5 months."

Large stone, with ornamented top:—- " Sacred to the Memory of Joseph Henderson of Distington who died September 26th 1841, Aged 29 Years Ann the daughter of Joseph & Eliza Henderson who died June 30th, 1839, Aged 1 Year & 10 Months." 11 " Sacred to the Memory of John Martin, died December 15th. 1840 Aged 91 Years. Dorothy the Wife of John Martin died ^ December 29th 1819. Aged 65 Years. Daniel their Son died March 20th 1817 aged 24 Years. Esther their Daughter died Feb. 15th. 1822 aged 24 Years. Mary Martin died Sep. 9th 1872, aged 93 years."

" In Memory of John Rook, who departed this Life July 22nd, 1839, Aged 88 Years. Sarah his Wife who died February 22nd 1842, Aged 89 Years. John their Son who died at Egremont, August 6th 1872, Aged 85 years. Also Mary the Wife [of] John Rook, jun. who died August 29th 1838 Aged 64 Years William their Son died in Dec1:19th 1844, Aged 26 Years. Joseph died in Liverpole March 3rd, 1845, aged 24 years."

Secure in hope, to-day our health we trust, To-morrow joins us to our native dust. Mary Jane, their Daughter, died July 19th 1844, Aged 26 Years." 12

Top ornamented with a representation of two large hooks;— " John Richardson. Sen1; formerly of the Old Brewery in Cockermouth, and Superintendent of the General Sunday School of that place, who died 19th February, 1858, Aged 78 Years."

Large stone, at top of which is " Life how short, Eternity how long ":— "Erected in Memory of Joseph Parker, who died at Goat near Cockermouth, May 5th 1859, aged 74 Years. Farewell dear wife I have gone before, My love to thee can be no more, No grief nor sorrow for me make, But love my children for my sake. Also Ann his Wife who died May 4th 1871, Aged 82 Years.— Tho' lost to sight; to memory dear. Sarah Parker, the Beloved Daughter of Ann Par­ ker, who departed this life at the Goat June 1st 1865, aged 30 Years. Weep not for me my dearest friends, Nor shake at death's sudden alarms, • Its but the voice that Jesus sends, To call one quickly to his arms "

Stone with ornamental shield, but no arms:— " In Memory of John Ostle, Supervisor of Inland Revenue, who died at Greysouthen, March 22nd 1865, Aged 48 years. Sarah the Daughter of John and Sarah Ostle, died June 25th, 1860, aged 1 Year & 9 Months "

" In Memory of George Martin who died Feb­ ruary 27th 1870, Aged 42 Years Jane the Daughter of George & .Elizabeth Martin died June 28th, 1866 Aged 16 years." 13

" Erected in Memory of Margaret the beloved Wife of Richard Allison, of Cocker­ mouth, who died May 7th 1865, aged 76 Years. Also of John their Son who died Feb. 2nd 1865, aged 56 Years "

" In Memory of Alexander Shepherd who died the 19th of January 1809, Aged 38 Years. Also of Mary his Wife who died the 28th day of January, 1850 Aged 84 Years. Also of George his Son, who died April 11th 1809; Aged 15 Years Also Alexander their Son who died June 6th, 1862, Aged 57 Years. Isabella, Wife of Alexander Shepherd died May 2nd 1835, aged 32 Years" At back of stone:— " Also Ann, their Daughter the Wife of Thomas Black, who died March 26th 1844, aged 36 years"

The following surmounted with hooks and ornaments :— " Therefore he ye also ready; for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh."—-S. Matthew xxiv. chap. 44 ve. The above verse is represented cut on the leaf of an open book, and on the opposite leaf is—" For his End was Peace":— " In Memory of Daniel Shepherd, of Brigham, who died on die 31st day of Jany 1850, aged 50 Years. Also Margaret his beloved Wife who died Aug8t 28th 1866, aged 59 Years. Thomas the Son of Daniel and Margaret Shepherd who died March 13th 1829, aged 9 months. Also of Hannah their Daughter, who died Nov1; 11th, 1847, aged 2 months "

On a large altar tomb, with" solid sides and ends ornamented with pointed arches, with the addition of an urn at each end:— " Erected in Memory of Richard Nuttall of Little Broughton who departed this Life August 13th 1841, aged 78."

"In Memory of Sarah the Wife of Andrew Irwing, Farmer of Oalva, who departed this Life September y6 25th 1766 • aged 40 years. Andrew Irwing died Decb.r 14th 1804, aged 84 years."

"Sacred to the Memory of John Harper of Eaglesfield, who departed this Life on the 29th day of July, 1835, aged 74 Years. Also of Ann his Wife, who died on the 20th day of June, 1835, aged 74 Years."

On a stone surmounted with an urn:—- "In Memory of John Danson of Greysouthen who died March 15th, 1799 aged 84 Years. Also Sarah his Daughter died Oct1; 7*? 1763 Aged 3 Years. Also John Ms Son died Oct1: 10*? 1763 aged 6 Years. Also Mary his Daughter died May 4th'1773. Aged 16 Years." 15 " Erected in memory of John Emerson of Crosby, who died May 6th 1853, aged 38 years Also of William Moore Emerson, Son of the above who died at Cockermouth, the 21st Oct. 1869, aged 20 Years '. Also of William Moor his Uncle of Old Field, who died Jany 7th 1840, aged 55 years"

On an altar tomb, supported on low pillars:— "In Memory of John Bell who departed this Life June the 6. 1760 Aged 75."

" In Memory of Sarah the Wife of Barnabas Brough who died March 14th 1780 Aged 38 years. Here lies inter'd the faithful Wife Who lost her own by giving life Yet while she liv'd she found the grace, That fits her for that glorious place A witness she thro' Christ could sing That death had lost his dread & sting."

"In Memory of Robert Cort of Graysouthen who died April 12th, 1793, aged 65. Also of Ann his Wife who died Jan1? 13th 1793, aged 72 years John their Son, died 25th July 1822 aged 65 years"

On an ornamented red stone, surmounted by a large cross:— 11 In Memory of James Black, son of William and Catherine Black, of Brigham, who died May 11th 1870, aged 35 years. ' He is not dead, but sleepeth.'" 16

On the leaf of an open book is—" Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."—St. Matthew xi. 28 ; then follows " Sacred to tlie Memory of William Sewell, Brewer of Great Broughton, who departed this Life on the 14th of June 1866,.aged 72 Years, Also Mary his Wife who died January 19th, 1874, aged 79 Years "

On. a stone ornamented with Gothic tracery, and surmounted by a heavy finial:— "Erected in Memory of Richard, the Son of Richard and Catharine Ferguson, of Eaglesfield, who died April 11th 1848, aged 5 years and 10 months and were interred at Bromfield also of Elizabeth their daughter who died August 18th 1862, Aged 16 years "

On a stone, the top of which is ornamented with books, &c.:— " Sacred to the Memory of John Shepherd of Brigham who died December 17th 1869, aged 73 years. Ann the Wife of John Shepherd who died April 18th, 1865 Aged 68 Years. Dinah the Daughter of John and Ann Shepherd of Brigham who died Jan1' 31st 1854 Aged 19 Years. Also Alexander their Son, who died May 28th 1875 Aged 46 Years Also Jane the Daughter of Joseph & Mary Ann Shepherd, who died April 11th 1861, Aged 11 Months "

On an inlaid slab of black marble or slate, with a floreated cross inside a quatrefoil above, is the following:— " Erected in Memory of John Asbridge, late of who died at Stanger, November 10th 1866, Aged 72 Years," 17

On a stone, the top of which is ornamented with books, &c.:— " Sacred to the Memory of William Parkin of Southwaite Mills, who died May 18th, 1854, Aged 56 Years "

On a handsome obelisk shaped monument of grey granite, resting on a plinth of sandstone, is the following inscription, cut upon a polished face, with the three other polished faces blank:—> "In affectionate Remembrance of Mary only Daughter of John & Sarah Harrison who died Sept. 11th, 1865 in the sixteenth year of her Age."

Top ornamented with books, &c.:—• " In Memory of Greorge Kerr of Broughton and late of North Shields, Northumberland who departed this Life April 21. 1838, Aged 77. Also of Sarah relict of .Greorge Kerr who departed this Life August 19th 1842, aged 73 Years "

"Erected hi Memory of John Shepherd who departed this Life 27th of May, 1828 aged 46 years. Mary Daughter of Joseph and Mary Harris of Graysouthen died Jan. 12th, 1830 aged 6 Years " Besides the foregoing are three large stone slabs, lying flat on the ground, but bearing no inscription; and to the east of these slabs is a large space enclosed by a dwarf wall, with obelisk shaped posts, from which festoons of bronzed iron, chains are suspended.

On an altar tomb, of massive proportions r— " Sacred to the memory of Mr. Joseph Hodgson Son of Mr. Robert Hodgson late of Newcastle, and Grandson of Mr. Joseph Harris of Graysouthen who died June 1st 1803. 2E 20 Years. This Stone is erected to the Memory of a dutiful Son, by his affectionate Mother. Mrs. Mary Hodgson departed this Life July 22nd. 1845, aged 92 years." On a small brass plate fastened in the stone below:— . " Sarah Harris Died Feb? 2. 1848 Aged 99 years " "Erected to the Memory of Joshua Mulcaster of Graysouthen, who departed this Life October 30th 1836. aged 69. This Stone was erected by Messrs Harris & Co. as a tribute of respect for long and faithful Services. Also Phillis his Wife who died March 6. 1838. aged 69. Also of Sarah their Daughter died Dec! 6. 1842 aged 11."

A Grave enclosed by a small iron palisading, inside of which is a bed of flowers, but without any inscription.

John Dufton their Son died Jan? 29th 1838 aged 73 years Mary his Wife died June 28th 1854 aged 84 years William their younger Son M.R.O.S. died Oct. 17th 1859, aged 53 years and was buried in the Church of Ceme­ tery, Birmingham. He was the sole founder of the Ear [Infirmary] in that town. Sarah their Daughter, died at Brighton Oct. 21st 1873 and was buried in the Cemetery at Birmingham, aged 70. The Rev? John Dufton MA. Survivor of the Family, Yicar of BreMeld, Suffolk, died at Brigh­ ton, Jan. 12th. 1874 and was buried at Bredfield, Aged 72." Under a large urn and ornamentations of acanthus leaves, &e., is:— " In Memory of Thomas Banks of G-rey- southen, who died Feb. 14th 1830, Aged 63 years. Margaret his Wife died Nov. 13th 1845. aged 73 years."

Large space, enclosed with a dwarf wall, and chains suspended from stone posts. On a stone, surmounted by a large cross, in the centre of which is, " I.H.S.":— " Here rest the mortal Remains of Thomas Wilson of Cockermouth who died January 28. A.D. 1857 Aged 661" " The memory of the Just is blessed.—-Prow x. 7," "Also Ann Rossiter, Relict of the above, and 37 afterwards Wife of Charles Were, who died in London, February 22nd, 1871 and was interred at Kensal Green. Also Albert Marriott eldest son of the above Thomas and Ann Rossiter Wilson, who was Vicar of Ainstable for 17 years where he died and was interred. Born June 5th 1825. Died April 8th 1870. Also Arthur Bushby their second son whose remains are interred at Morecambe, Born June 29th 1826, Died March 14th 1868."

This stone has carved pillars at the sides, and at back is an elaborate display of arms. On the shield is a lion or dog, raised up on. its hind legs, and in the right paw a sword, with the left paw touching it.—Orest dog's head erased, resting on a book " Erected in Memory of Jacob Messenger of Great Broughton who (lied Feb. 20th 1806. On an octagonal obelisk shapedj monument, with elaborately carved top and base, the following inscription on one of the four in­ laid marble sides;— ; ' ' 1 "In Memory of Thomas Mawson who died July 9th 1853 aged 63 years, Sarah his wife died Nov? 25th 1840 aged 55 years." By this monument the sun dial is placed, and bears the following inscription ' Transit Gloria Mundi.' 1838. Made by Daniel Max­ well, Nithsdale." ; . George White Sen! who departed this Life May 27th 1773 aged 76 years. Ann White Wife of George White. Sen! Died 20th Sept. 1789 aged ... " years."

They were married 56 years, and interred together in the same grave. Judith, oldest Daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Hodgson of Bridekirk who died Nov1: 30th 1819 aged 23 years. Martha their second Daughter died September 22d. 1835 aged 34 years. Joseph their youngest Son who died the 23d of July, 1842 aged 43 years." They lived 56 years together, and were buried at one time.

Neat stone with perforated cross at top \— " In memory of William Senhouse, of Lincoln's Inn, Barrister at Law, Son of Humphrey Senhouse Esq. of Oockermouth, and great-great Grandson of Patricius Senhouse of Hames Hall, who died on the 8* July 1829 aged 33. Also of Mary Sen- house, his Sister who died on the 6* December, 1870." On a brass plate, inlaid in the floor of the old Chancel:— " Beneath this Stone are interred the remains of the first born Son of John Sanderson and EEz- abeth Fisher of Wood Hall in this Parish who lived and died on the Third day of August 1805,"

Handsome grey and white marble monument, surmounted with a large white marble sarcophagus, on the face of which is inscribed :— " Mary Relict of William Browne Ob. 16. July 1818 JE* 76." On a'n oval white marble plaque affixed to the face of this monu­ ment, with marble drapery over it:— " To the memory of William Browne, Esquire, of Tallentire Hall, in this Parish, whose Remains lie deposited within the Railing of this Altar. He died A.D. 1802 Aged 69 years."

A large space, to the north of the old Chancel, enclosed by a neat low fence, raised on a dwarf wall (Fisher Family, Wood Hall). 05

On a neat stone, with " I.H.S." amongst a bouquet of lilies, the whole within a Gothic quatrefoil, and underneath the following inscription:— " In Memory of Elizabeth Carter the beloved Wife of Rev4 James Carter, Yicar of Bridekirk. Died April 4. 1873."

Another similar, but ornaments within a Gothic trefoil "In affectionate Remembrance of Henry Son of Henry & Mary Robinson, who died at Cockermouth Jan. 3r.d 1875 aged 4 years. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, Blessed be the name of the Lord." 97

An altar tomb, supported on six elegant pillars:— " Underneath this Stone is interred the Body of William Hervey of Bridekirk Surgeon who died the 27th November 1834, aged 27 years. Also within these Rails Frederick Greorge Son of William Slack Esq. of Anns Hill and Jane Heph- zibah his Wife who died on the 19th of July 1837 aged three months. And also Christina Maria Daughter of William & Jane H. Slack, Died the 4th of March 1841 Aged 5 years & 6 months."

A handsome monument of fine Sicilian marble, surmounted with a draped female winged figure, etc.:— " In memory of Greorgina Caroline, the beloved Wife of William Lamplugh Hervey who died on the 17th October 1872 aged 21 years. The Lord gave & the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord." . She was accidentally thrown from her carriage and killed. The whole space is enclosed by an elegant bronzed iron palisading, resting on a dwarf wall.

Under drapery, ornaments, etc.;— "Sacred to the memory of Ann the "Wife of Henry Twentyman of Great Broughton, who died 29* of January 1810 aged 46 years. Also of the above Henry Twentyman who died on the 5* Day of September 1824 Aged 70 years. Also of Rachel their fifth Child, who died 22nd December 1797 aged 7 years. And of Rachel their ninth Child, who died Oct. 9th 1800 aged 1 year and 3 months. Also of Jane Twentyman their Daughter who died June 21st 1813, aged 18 years. And of Elizabeth their Daughter who died October 12th 1816, aged 23 years. Sarah their Daughter the Wife of John Harrison died March 11th 1827 aged 25 years." " Here lies the Corps of the Rev John Harrison A.M. late Vicar of Bridekirk Aged 77. 1755. Also The Corps of his Dear Wife Aged 71. 1754." Built in the S. wall of the old Chancel, outside. " In memory of Ann the Wife of John Fisher of Papcastle who departed this life the 19th of December 1779 aged 87 years." "Here lieth the body of John Thursby of Tallentire died May y6 4* 1771, aged 80 years. Also Mary his Wife who Died May 20* 1785 aged 83 years." A slab, uninseribed, lying flat over the grave beside a coffin- shaped, half round stone, lying also flat on the grave. " Here lies ye Body of Richard y° Son of John Carter of Tallintier who died July ye 26* 1739 aged 18 years. John the Son of John Carter died • February ye 28. 1740, aged 26 years." " Here rests the Body of Christopher Atkinson of little Broughton who departed this Life Nov" 15* 1749 in the 57 year of his age. 102

" Here lies ye body of Jane y° wife to Thomas Carter of Tallentire who died December y° 29* Anno dom. 1740 aged 24 years. Mary her Daughter who died January ye 6* 1749 aged 11 years." On an altar tomb:— "Heare lies Richard Lamplugh of Dovenby who died March 23 17... Aged ... years. Also Mary the third Daughter who died.. Aged years."

The next four refer to the painted Windows.—East end, on a brass plate, inside new Edifice, as are all the remaining inscriptions;— " These Windows were placed here to the memory of Joseph Dykes Ballantine Dykes and Mary Ballantine his Wife by their surviving Children A.D. 1869."

West end:— " TO • THE * BELOVED • MEMORY • OF OUR • FATHER • F, L. B. DYKES. • AND OF OUR BROTHER F. B. B. DYKES WHO BOTH DIED IN THE YEAR 1866."

North transept • " In Memory of his Father and Mother Robert & Mary Stockdale of Tallentire. This Window has been Erected By George Stockdale of 9 Hanover Villas Kensington Park London formerly of this Parish AD 1874."

South:— " This Window has been presented By George Stockdale of No 9 Hanover Villas Kensington Park, London formerly of' this Parish in affec­ tionate Memory of Catherine his beloved Wife who died in London July 8. 1869. & is Buried in the Cemetry, Brompton." 103

On a brass plate, affixed to the pulpit, inscribed in black, red, and blue:— "In memory of her Husband John Smith of Tallentire who died June 30ft 1863. This Pulpit has been presented to the Parish Church of Bride- kirk by his affectionate Widow Sarah Smith, nee Eooke, 1869."

On a brass plate, affixed to the reading desk:—* " This Best has been presented to the Parish Church of Bridekirk together with the Lord's Table, Table Cover & two Chairs by Mrs. G-eorge Stockdale of 9 Hanover Villas Kensington Park London 1869."

Porch j west wall.—White marble, pn a black ground;—> "In Memory of Miss Hephzibah Hervey who died Jan. 27th. 1838 aged 65 years."

Opposite wall.—On slate,, with black marble frame.*— "In Memory of Jane Hephzibah Wife of William Slack Esq* of Anns Hill who died 17th May 1839 aged 36 years."

White marble cenotaph, over the inner entrance to porch:— " Sacred to the Memory of Dorothy the Wife of Joseph Steel of Cockermouth Solicitor, and Daughter of John Ponsonby Esqr of Hail Hall who died February 11^ 1799 aged 37 years."

Near tliis monument stands the celebrated ancient carved stone Font, with its Eunic inscription,—Se# History of Cumberland.

Altar tomb of white marble* surmounted by a marble urn :— "Sacred to the memory of Sarah wife of the Kev* H. A. Hervey Vicar of this Parish died Nov.1" 3r.d 1827 Aged 55 years." " The memory of the just is Blessed," " And the Spirit shall return to God who gave it.' 104
