Atribuo o início desse sucesso à minha participação no programa de entrevistas Larry King Live, do canal CNN, no dia 13 de dezembro de 1997. CHAPTER 11 An Overview of Cold Reading Strategies Chris Roe and Elizabeth Roxburgh INTRODUCTION The standard mainstream explanation for impressive mediumistic communications is in terms of deceptive practices called cold reading. Forexample,incommentingonGarySchwartz’sbookThe Afterlife Experiments,1 which describes a number of experiments with mediums that are claimed to have produced evidence of postmortem communica- tion, Hyman comments that “the readings he presents [ ...] for his case very much resemble the sorts of readings we would expect from psychic readers in general and cold readers in particular.”2 Wiseman and O’Keeffe similarly criticize findings reported by Schwartz, Russek, Nelson, and Barentsen on the grounds that “seemingly accurate readings can be created by a set of psychological stratagems collectively referred to as ‘cold reading.’ ”3 Of medium Rebecca Rosen, Karen Stollznow comments, “like [ ...] many others before her, [she] has her own techniques for cold reading, and possibly hot reading. However, Rosen’s skills are far less impressive than those of cold reading experts.”4 Nickell claims that John Edward’s successful television demonstrations were the result of his skill at cold reading and that Edward was also not averse to gathering information about clients in advance of readings.5 Underdown6 similarly implies that James Van Praagh relies on standard cold reading techniques when broaching topics with a studio audience, and Greasley7 has provided a useful analysis of a mediumistic sitting that featured in 178 The Spiritualist Movement the British TV documentary Is There Anybody There? in terms of strata- gems of cold reading (although they are not referred to as such). -

Jose Alvarez THE KITCHEN In 1988, Jose Alvarez toured Australia channeling the spirit of “Carlos,” a 2,000-year-old shaman who held forth on Atlantis, “corrected” the date of Jesus’s birth, reported on the movements of UFOs, and divined other sundry matters before capacity crowds at the Sydney Opera House. In the voluble tradition of fundamentalist televangelists, healers, and cultish gurus of all stripes, Alvarez charismatically staged the visionary with the help of his mentor James Randi, himself a debunker of paranormal phenomena, who also appears in the recent video Dejeuner Sur Le Dish, 2007, playing chess with Carlos; besides conducting séances, Alvarez peddled vials of tears and potent crystals and proliferated his message via the mass media. But even stranger than Alvarez’s initial hoax was the fact that scores of people were persuaded by it. Indeed, so convincing was his act that its influence survived its debunking. In laying bare the structure of such presentations, Alvarez counterintuitively reaffirmed the possibility of conviction. Even though the aim of his deception was ultimately to enlighten, Carlos’s moral is that people believe against their better judgment in matters of both lesser and greater consequence. Taking this as axiomatic, Alvarez’s first New York solo exhibition, “The Visitors,” furthered his quasi-sociological research into mysticism and magic. Having quit live performance in favor of video and collage, in this show he expanded upon the promise of his earlier work through a range of media. Placed at the gallery’s vestibule, A Separate Reality, 2007, comments on the spectacle of the earlier communions— eventually executed in Europe, Asia, South America, and the United States, as documentary photographs of Alvarez in Italy and China installed alongside the monitor suggested as well—with Alvarez inhabiting the role of the medium and of the whistleblower in turn: Clips corroborating past Carlos embodiments alternate with others culled from CNN, the Today show, and 60 Minutes, where Alvarez affirms his position as a conceptual artist. -

For further information or to subscribe to the Christian Research Journal go to: http://www.equip.org SYNOPSIS Recent years have witnessed a revival of interest in contact with the dead. Much of this interest is due to the popularity of mediums such as John Edward, Sylvia Browne, and James Van Praagh. Edward and Van Praagh both have popular television shows, and all three have written best-selling books and have appeared on numerous talk shows. Several movies, such as the hit, The Sixth Sense, have also made spirit contact the theme of their stories. Sylvia Browne and James Van Praagh do not practice spirit contact in a vacuum; they have complex spiritual beliefs spelled out in their books and expressed on talk shows. While Edward claims to be Roman Catholic, Browne and Van Praagh have openly rejected orthodox Christianity and embraced a nonjudgmental God more tailored to New Age beliefs. Edward, Browne, and Van Praagh all have backgrounds that include heavy psychic experiences as well as research into the occult and psychic worlds. Skeptics have denounced these mediums and attempted to expose them as frauds. This raises questions: Are all mediums frauds, and can we be sure that they are? Is it possible that some mediums may be receiving information from a demonic source? Is the classification of mediums as frauds a helpful response? Despite seemingly being debunked by skeptics, mediums still generate strong interest. -

Dr Dingwall’s Casebook Part One: A Sceptical Enquirer Eric John Dingwall, author, anthropologist, librarian, psychic investigator, and, to some, the ‘British Kinsey’ is less well-known than his erstwhile colleague and sometime adversary, Harry Price, but is a figure of equal interest, says Christopher Josiffe (copyright 2013) Eric John Dingwall was born in Ceylon in 1890 (or 1891, he was not certain of his actual date of birth]. Like Price, he was fortunate enough to have a private income which allowed him to pursue his various interests freely. He studied modern languages at Pembroke College, Cambridge, and honed his librarianship and cataloguing skills whilst employed at the Cambridge University Library between 1915 and 1918. One of his earliest interests was conjuring and stage magic. Having performed his first magic trick aged eight, he joined the Magic Circle in 1909, eventually becoming an honorary Vice President. The secrets and tricks of sleight-of-hand that he learned there proved to be invaluable for his subsequent investigations into séances and mediums. It was as fellow members of the Magic Circle that Dingwall and Price first made another’s acquaintance. Dr Dingwall and Mr Price Dingwall had joined the Society for Psychical Research in 1920, also holding the post of Director of the American SPR’s Department of Physical Phenomena, pertaining to ‘physical’ mediumship – the manifestation of apports, ectoplasm and pseudopods – as opposed to ‘mental’ mediumship, or the apparent display of clairvoyance and telepathy. From 1921 to 1927 he sat with various mediums, testing their claims and observing them at close hand. -

2009 Annual Report OMEGA A Model for Change Attendance at Omega Institute’s inspiring, educational programs remained strong, despite the economic downturn, as people turned to Omega for the tools and support needed to deal with life’s changes. At Omega, we look at change holistically. No one issue or problem is disconnected from another. Since it seems it’s human nature to make big changes when confronted with big challenges, this year presented the chance for many people to move from an old paradigm of fear to one of creativity and sustainability. Omega has been helping create this shift since 1977. In July, Omega proudly celebrated one of its own creative and sustainable initiatives, the opening of the award-winning Omega Center for Sustainable Living (OCSL), a state-of-the- Participants continue art environmental education center and water reclamation facility (see page 2). Cults and Cosmic Consciousness: Religious Vision in the American 1960s CAMILLE PAGLIA 1. eclipse by politics Commentary on the 1960s has been mas- sive. Law and politics in that turbulent decade are well doc- umented but remain controversial, and the same thing can be said of contemporary innovations in mass media and the arts. One major area remains ambiguous or poorly assimi- lated, however—the new religious vision, which for a tanta- lizing moment in the American sixties brought East and West together in a progressive cultural synthesis. Its promise was never completely fulfilled, for reasons I will try to sketch here. But the depth and authenticity of that spiritual shift need to be more widely acknowledged. A political model currently governs interpretations of the sixties because of the enduring reform movements born in that period, including environmentalism, feminism, and gay liberation. Their mobilizing energy, as well as the organiza- tional style that would also be adopted by antiwar protests, initially came from the civil rights movement sparked by the us Supreme Court’s 1954 decision declaring segregation in public schools unconstitutional. In that crusade, it must be remembered, ordained Protestant ministers such as Martin Luther King, Jr., played a leading role, as they also had in nineteenth-century abolitionism. The civil rights movement, with its hymns and anthems, appealed not just to secular standards of social justice but to a higher moral code.
