Bahri Arifin, Ririn Setyowati English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences Mulawarman University Pos-el: [email protected] ABSTRACT Code switching is one of interesting topics to be discussed nowadays as it is often encountered by anyone and anywhere in the present time. Code switching appears in many literary works, and one of them is in Eastern Promises film. Eastern Promises film contains code switching of three different languages including English, Russian, and Turkish, and there is also evidence that code switching phenomenon exists in crime film. In criminal situation, the language user performs code switching for particular purposes. This research focused on analyzing the types of code switching and the social factors triggering the characters in performing code switching through descriptive qualitative research. The result of this research showed that there were eighty-one types of code switching found by the researcher in Eastern Promises film. The researcher found three types of code switching performed by ten characters, those types are inter-sentential code switching, tag switching, and intra-sentential code switching. In addition, the researcher also found four social factors in every code switching practices, those social factors are participant, setting, topic, and function. The social factors triggering the ten characters in performing code switching in their utterances show that language variety of the ten characters is a result of relationship between language and social factors that occurs in society. Hammond The University of Kansas t he challenges facing contemporary boys are complex, highlighting the importance of positive paternal influence for young men to achieve success. this study examines the father-son relationships of 10 prominent gifted men of achievement to identify factors influencing talent development. through biographical analysis, 6 significant themes were identified: unconditional belief in son, strong work ethic, encouragement and guidance, maintaining high expectations and fostering determination, pride in son’s accomplishments, and mutual admiration and respect. implications for parents and educators of high-achieving gifted males are discussed. “My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived and let me watch him do it.” —Clarence Kelland (Lyons & Lyons, 2002, p. 44) It is a challenging time to be a boy in this country. Media History Monographs 12:1 (2010) ISSN 1940-8862 The Edward R. Murrow of Docudramas and Documentary By Lawrence N. Strout Mississippi State University Three major TV and film productions about Edward R. Murrow‟s life are the subject of this research: Murrow, HBO, 1986; Edward R. Murrow: This Reporter, PBS, 1990; and Good Night, and Good Luck, Warner Brothers, 2005. Murrow has frequently been referred to as the “father” of broadcast journalism. So, studying the “documentation” of his life in an attempt to ascertain its historical role in supporting, challenging, and/or adding to the collective memory and mythology surrounding him is important. Research on the docudramas and documentary suggests the depiction that provided the least amount of context regarding Murrow‟s life (Good Night) may be the most available for viewing (DVD). Therefore, Good Night might ultimately contribute to this generation (and the next) having a more narrow and skewed memory of Murrow. Most often, the only appropriate reply is 'Long live the Western!' for in the cinema's history of more than a century no genre has shown greater longevity or resilience. If it was not present at the birth of the movies, it was there shortly after the midwife left and, every time it has seemed headed for the doldrums, for instance in the late 1930s or the 1960s, someone—such as John Ford with Stagecoach (1939) or Sergio Leone and, later, Clint Eastwood—comes along and rescues it for art as well as box office. Western film historian and scholar Edward Buscombe, writing in The BFI Companion to the Western in 1988, not a prolific period for the Western, wrote: 'So far the genre has always managed to renew itself ... The Western may surprise us yet.' And so it is currently doing on our screens in two major inflections of the genre: the Australian/UK co-production, John Hillcoat's The Proposition, set in [65] BRIAN MCFARLANE outback Australia in the 1880s; and the US film, Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, set largely in Wyoming in 1963, lurching forwards to the 1980s. It was ever a char acteristic of the Western, and a truism of writing about it, that it reflected more about its time of production than of the period in which it was set, that it was a matter of America dreaming about its agrarian past. -
