The estate comprises an impressive Grade II Listed 11 bedroom country house, detached 4 bedroom farmhouse, detached 3 bedroom cottage, an extensive range of traditional farm buildings, 8 loose boxes, a successful tree nursery business and approximately 260 acres of arable and pastureland which is let out on 2 agricultural tenancies. HISTORY Landford Lodge was originally constructed in the 18th Century by Sir William Heathcote to resemble the façade of Hursley Lodge, Winchester. The property was later purchased by Samuel Greatheed who made it his permanent residence. When his son, Bertie, inherited the property, he made considerable improvements which are still seen today. Landford Lodge was requisitioned in the Second World War and the house and grounds were used to station American D Day landing troops. SITUATION Landford is a civil parish village located on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border. Local amenities comprise a pub, village shop, post office and the New Forest Primary school. The cathedral city of Salisbury is located approximately 10 miles to the North West and offers a wider range of shopping facilities, schools and recreational activities including restaurants, a cinema and theatre. Salisbury has a train station with ample parking and provides a direct route into London Waterloo from 90 minutes. Alternatively trains from Southampton central to London Waterloo in approximately 80 minutes. The village has an excellent communication network, with easy access onto the A36 (Salisbury), A338 (Bournemouth), M27 (Southampton) and M3 (London). There are also airports at Southampton 14 miles and Bournemouth 23 miles. Landford is in the New Forest National Park which offers a network of footpaths and bridleways which are ideal for walking and riding. EDUCATION There is a selection of popular schools in the area, both state and private. Primary schools include Forres Sandle Manor, Moyles Court, Cathedral School and Norman Court. Secondary schools include Hampshire Colligate School, Leaden Hall, Godolphin, Leehurst Swan, Chafyn Grove, Bishops Wordsworth and South Wilts Grammar Schools. 2 3 LANDFORD LODGE Landford Lodge is an impressive, detached, Grade II Listed, south facing country house that was built in the late 18th century. It is approached via a private driveway off the northern boundary that runs through the middle of the estate onto a formal, gravel parking area at the front of the house. The front door opens into an entrance hall which leads through to the main reception, sweeping staircase and mezzanine landing area. There are four principle reception rooms including a drawing room, dining room, sitting room, and family room with high ceilings and large original fireplaces. An internal corridor leads to the large kitchen/breakfast room with an oil-fired aga, fitted units, island counter and larder. The ground floor also comprises utility room, laundry room, cellar, downstairs cloakrooms and annexe flat offering sitting room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. On the first floor is the master suite comprising bedroom with built in wardrobes, feature fireplace, bathroom with separate shower and large dressing room. It was funded by the New Forest’s Rural Development Programme for England’s Leader funding programme (RDPE (Leader)) and the New Forest National Park Authority. Angela Peters, as project officer, works within the New Forest Land Advice Service (NF LAS) team which provides independent land management advice to land owners in the New Forest. The plan has been written in discussion with a number of Landford residents who are interested in conservation in Landford, and is supported by Landford Parish Council.     43. Wiltshire 43.1 Physical Geology The centre and east of Wiltshire are dominated by the massive outcrop of Chalk, with Jurassic clays and limestones to the north west. There are only very limited outcrops of acidic rocks, with a small area of Tertiary deposits of the Hampslire Basin in the far south, and patches of Lower Greenwid bclow the Chalk scarp, either sidc of Galne and by Swindon. Soils Soil associations dominated by strongly acid or freely &dining acidic soils are also very restricted, with podzolic soils occurring in small areas of the Tertiary deposits in the south and on the Lower Grecnsand west of Galne. Otherwise acid soils are likely to be largely confined to areas of brown earths developed on clay with flints, and on the drift capping some of the chalk plateaux, although these sorts are likely to be fairly damp. They are most extensive in the Savemake Forest area (Map lb). 43.2 Landscape history 19th Century In the early 19th century, extensive unenclosed cornmolls existed on the Tertiary deposits to the south which would havc been similar to the commons of the New Forest. On the Lower Greensand south west of Calne, there was a sniall heathy common. There were also heathlands south of Longleat. Current landscapes and Natural Areas The Chalk outcrop is occupied by the South Wessex Downs Natural Area (NA80), Berkshire and Marlborough Downs Natural Area (NA79) and a small part of the Hampshire Downs (NA78). The South Wessex Down5 includes an area of podzolic soils developed on an out-lying outcrop of Tertiary deposits south eat of Salisbury (SU2027), but the common land here has been long enclosed and replaced with farmland and plantation.
