Application for 2010 Boston Marathon Waiver APPLICATION FOR 2010 BOSTON MARATHON WAIVER The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) has again given several Boston Marathon qualifying-time “waivers” to Colonial Road Runners, to distribute to our members. Those who receive the waivers do not have to meet the standard qualifying-time requirements. Instead, they are given a special “invitational” Boston Marathon application to file with the BAA. The registration fee for the invitational application was $200 in 2009. CRITERIA: • All Colonial members are eligible to apply to the club for a Boston Marathon waiver and are encouraged to do so. • If you applied for a waiver for the current year (2009), you are still eligible to apply again for 2010 regardless of whether you received one or not • In the event that the number of applications exceeds the number of available waivers, preference will be given to members who have: (1) Belonged to the club for at least one full year, (2) Volunteered in club activities during 2009, (3) Been actively involved in club races and events during 2009. (4) Have completed one or more races at least 20K (12.4 miles) or longer during 2009. APPLICATION: • To apply for a 2010 Boston Marathon waiver, please fill out the attached Application Form, and return it to Jim Conley by October 10, 2009: E-mail: [email protected] Mail: 171 Hancock St., Abington, MA 02351 • If you have any questions about the application process or selection criteria, please contact Jim at (781)- 878-7296 or his e-mail address listed above. THE DEADLINE FOR WAIVER APPLICATIONS IS OCTOBER 10, 2009. We expect to select the waiver recipients at a Board of Directors meeting in early-November. Once we receive the waiver applications from the BAA, we will notify all applicants of the results and distribute the applications accordingly. Last year we were able to do this in November, however in other years this has occurred in December. .

The bombs resulted in three deaths and several hundred injuries. Of lesser concern, in the immediate aftermath, was the fact that nearly 6,000 runners failed to finish the race. We were approached by the marathon’s organizers, the Boston Athletic Association (BAA), and asked to recommend a procedure for projecting finish times for the runners who could not complete the race. With assistance from the BAA, we created a dataset consisting of all the runners in the 2013 race who reached the halfway point but failed to finish, as well as all runners from the 2010 and 2011 Boston marathons. The data consist of split times from each of the 5 km sections of the course, as well as the final 2.2 km (from 40 km to the finish). The statistical objective is to predict the missing split times for the runners who failed to finish in 2013.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010 BRONX N. Y. VOLUME 43 ISSUE #5 Van Cortlandt Track Club newsletter My Kenyan Adventure by Kyle Ha! This summer presented me with one of those unique moments in life when I knew I had to strike while the iron was hot. Everything came together running-wise, financially, & in terms of my summer break from teaching. I was then off to Africa. My flights all went well. Emirates is an incredible airline and I ate very well onboard (i.e. grilled tofu with vegetables, fruit salads, Indian rice with beans, etc.) There were literally hundreds of movies and tv shows to watch and everyone had his/her own individual tv screen and advanced remote. 'Stars' lit up the cabin ceiling at night. The flight was 11 hours 41 minutes from JFK to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I landed in the Middle East for the first time ever and was immediately struck by the opulence of Dubai. Giant sparkling columns lined the high ceilinged airport. Triple story cascading Kyle with Daniel Rono by the pool at th" waterfalls fell near giant elevators. All local Muslim women I saw High Altitude Training Centr" had their heads covered and men wore flowing white robes with long white head scarves (sorry, I don't know the proper terms for those). The world's only 7 star hotel, Al Burj Dubai, sat nearby--on its own private island. The airport's Burger King carried the 'Bean Patty--Veg' sandwich. Of course, I left the airport and explored a bit outside but then had to report back to Emirates fairly quickly for my connecting flight.

Defending Bank of America Chicago Marathon champion Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya, 2010 Virgin London Marathon champion Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia, and 2010 Boston Marathon champion Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot of Kenya will put their winning records on the line in Chicago on Sunday, October 10. The participation of these runners in the 2010 Bank of America Chicago Marathon will be pivotal in deciding the winner of the 2009-2010 World Marathon Majors (WMM) series. Wanjiru and Kebede are tied atop the current series standings with 50 points apiece. A victory by one or the other in Chicago would likely determine the champion of the series, which concludes with the ING New York City Marathon on November 7. “Bringing together these three great champions in the prime of their careers will make the 2010 Bank of America Chicago Marathon one of the most exciting races in the event’s history,” said Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski.

  • Introduction to Running Biomechanics Written by Matt Phillips - Get Free Updates Here
INTRODUCTION TO RUNNING BIOMECHANICS WRITTEN BY MATT PHILLIPS - GET FREE UPDATES HERE bi·o·me·chan·ics /ˌbīōməˈkaniks/ Noun The study of the mechanical laws relating to the movement or structure of living organisms. If the above has turned you off slightly, I totally understand. It’s hard to go for a run these days without worrying about where our foot is landing, what shoe we’re wearing, or optimal stride frequency. Surely running can’t be so complicated! The good news is, it doesn’t have to be! The first thing you can do is discount anybody out there who tells you that their way is the only way. If that were the case, all elite, world-class runners would have the same running style, and quite simply they don’t. Running, like any sport, is a skill for which improvement will depend on suitable conditioning and active development, but it’s about building on your individual running style, as opposed to basing your training regime on what happens to work well for somebody else. Having a basic understanding of the biomechanics of running can help you appreciate your own running form and see where you may be able to make improvements. It can also help you make more sense of what you read and hear with regards to running styles, training programs, conditioning exercises, footwear, etc. Although running most definitely depends on whole body interaction, dividing the running stride up into individual components or “phases” can help us understand how slight changes can help improve performance and reduce susceptibility to injury.
