Completing the Results of the 2013 Boston Marathon Dorit Hammerling1, Matthew Cefalu2, Jessi Cisewski3, Francesca Dominici2, Giovanni Parmigiani2,4, Charles Paulson5, Richard L. Smith1,6* 1 Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, United States of America, 2 Department of Biostatistics, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America, 3 Department of Statistics, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States of America, 4 Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America, 5 Puffinware LLC, State College, Pennsylvania, United States of America, 6 Department of Statistics and Operations Research, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States of America Abstract The 2013 Boston marathon was disrupted by two bombs placed near the finish line. The bombs resulted in three deaths and several hundred injuries. Of lesser concern, in the immediate aftermath, was the fact that nearly 6,000 runners failed to finish the race. We were approached by the marathon’s organizers, the Boston Athletic Association (BAA), and asked to recommend a procedure for projecting finish times for the runners who could not complete the race. With assistance from the BAA, we created a dataset consisting of all the runners in the 2013 race who reached the halfway point but failed to finish, as well as all runners from the 2010 and 2011 Boston marathons. The data consist of split times from each of the 5 km sections of the course, as well as the final 2.2 km (from 40 km to the finish). The statistical objective is to predict the missing split times for the runners who failed to finish in 2013.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010 BRONX N. Y. VOLUME 43 ISSUE #5 Van Cortlandt Track Club newsletter My Kenyan Adventure by Kyle Ha! This summer presented me with one of those unique moments in life when I knew I had to strike while the iron was hot. Everything came together running-wise, financially, & in terms of my summer break from teaching. I was then off to Africa. My flights all went well. Emirates is an incredible airline and I ate very well onboard (i.e. grilled tofu with vegetables, fruit salads, Indian rice with beans, etc.) There were literally hundreds of movies and tv shows to watch and everyone had his/her own individual tv screen and advanced remote. 'Stars' lit up the cabin ceiling at night. The flight was 11 hours 41 minutes from JFK to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I landed in the Middle East for the first time ever and was immediately struck by the opulence of Dubai. Giant sparkling columns lined the high ceilinged airport. Triple story cascading Kyle with Daniel Rono by the pool at th" waterfalls fell near giant elevators. All local Muslim women I saw High Altitude Training Centr" had their heads covered and men wore flowing white robes with long white head scarves (sorry, I don't know the proper terms for those). The world's only 7 star hotel, Al Burj Dubai, sat nearby--on its own private island. The airport's Burger King carried the 'Bean Patty--Veg' sandwich. Of course, I left the airport and explored a bit outside but then had to report back to Emirates fairly quickly for my connecting flight.

  • A Star Is Born Shalane Flanagan finds Her Distance
A Star Is Born Shalane Flanagan finds her distance. BY TITO MORALES hortly after Shalane Flanagan’s marathon debut in New York City, she and her husband, Steve Edwards, boarded a plane for a trip to the Hawaiian SIslands. A few teammates from the Oregon Track Club—Simon Bairu, Tim Nelson, and Lisa Koll—joined them on the getaway. As Flanagan lounged and recuperated on a remote beach in Maui, some 5,000 miles from Manhattan’s Central Park, a couple of tourists approached and gushed, “Oh, you’re that girl who ran the marathon! Congratulations!” “I was literally in a bathing suit, hat, and sunglasses,” Flanagan recalls with a laugh. “I was kind of shocked that they would recognize me.” She shouldn’t have been. While her bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2008 Olympic Games may have made her a star in the eyes of the international running community, it was her scintillating run at one of the highest-profile road races on the planet that elevated her renown to just about everyone else. The runners’ daughter goes long As was detailed in “The Runners’ Daughter” [see the Sept/Oct 2010 issue], Flana- gan’s transformation into a bona fide marathoner was a long time coming. The seed was planted during a childhood spent in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Patri- ots’ Day meant an annual excursion into the city to watch the Boston Marathon. She learned early on of her parents’ exploits as distance runners, and she vividly remembers watching her father compete along the famed Boston course.
