ADAMS PEARMAIN Herefordshire, England 1862 Oct 15 Nov Mar 14 Adams Pearmain is a an old-fashioned late dessert apple, one of the most popular varieties in Victorian England. It has an attractive 'pearmain' shape. This is a fairly dry apple - which is perhaps not regarded as a desirable attribute today. In spite of this it is actually a very enjoyable apple, with a rich aromatic flavour which in apple terms is usually described as Although it had 'shelf appeal' for the Victorian housewife, its autumnal colouring is probably too subdued to compete with the bright young things of the modern supermarket shelves. Perhaps this is part of its appeal; it recalls a bygone era where subtlety of flavour was appreciated - a lovely apple to savour in front of an open fire on a cold winter's day. Tree hardy. AERLIE RED FLESH (Hidden Rose, Mountain Rose) California 1930’s 19 20 20 Cook Oct 20 15 An amazing red fleshed apple, discovered in Aerlie, Oregon, which may be the best of all red fleshed varieties and indeed would be an outstandingly delicious apple no matter what color the flesh is. A choice seedling, Aerlie Red Flesh has a beautiful yellow skin with pale whitish dots, but it is inside that it excels. Deep rose red flesh, juicy, crisp, hard, sugary and richly flavored, ripening late (October) and keeping throughout the winter. The late Conrad Gemmer, an astute observer of apples with 500 varieties in his collection, rated Hidden Rose an outstanding variety of top quality. -

Dies vor allem auch deshalb, da nach Bereitstellung eines städtischen Grundstückes auf dem Gelände des Gartenamtes, sowohl der Bayerische Landesverband für Gartenbau und Landespflege, als auch der Stadtkreisverband für Gartenbau und Landespflege Ingolstadt, mit seinen 11 Obst- und Gartenbauvereinen (ca. 3.000 eingetragene Mitglieder und ca. 5.000 Familienangehörige), bereit war, die Materialkosten zu tragen. Damit steht nicht nur den Vereinsmitgliedern der Obst- und Gartenbauvereine, der Siedlervereinigung, den Kleingärtnern, der Landwirtschaft, u.a. ein obstbaulicher Fachgarten zur Information zur Verfügung, sondern er dient allen Gartenfreunden der Bevölkerung als Beispiel für die Anzucht unterschiedlicher Kulturformen von Obstgehölzen, alter und neuer Sorten, die für den privaten Garten geeignet sind. Deshalb ist die Eröffnung des Ingolstädter Obstlehrgartens ein gartenbauliches Ereignis, ganz im Sinne jahrzehntelanger gartenkultureller Tradition Ingolstadts. Der bereitwilligen Unter- stützung des Projektes durch die Stadt Ingolstadt gilt mein persönlicher Dank. -

MCGEOCH Five Pieces for Small Orchestra, Op. 42 DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH (1906- ) The Fi ve Pieces, written by Shostakovich at the age of twenty-nine, were never mentioned or listed among his major works, until Ivan M artynov, in a monograph ( 1947) referred to them as "Five Fragments for Orchestra, 193 5 manuscript, op. 42." A conflict, which had begun to appear between the compose r's natura l, but advanced expression, and the Soviet official sanction came to a climax in 1934 wh en he produced his "avant guarde" opera Lady Ma cbeth of Mzensk. He was accuse d of "deliberate musical affectation " and of writing "un Soviet, eccent ric music, founded upon formalistic ideas of bourge ois musical conce ptions." Responding to this official castigation, he wrote a se ries of short, neoclassic, understated works, typical of the Fi ve Pieces on tonight's program. -

2010 ARTS ADVOCACY HANDBOOK Celebrating 30 Years of Service to the Arts January 2010 Dear Arts Leader: As we celebrate our 30th year of service to the arts, we know that “Art Works in South Carolina” – in our classrooms and in our communities. We also know that effective advocacy must take place every day! And there has never been a more important time to advocate for the arts than NOW. With drastic funding reductions to the South Carolina Arts Commission and arts education programs within the S. C. Department of Education, state arts funding has never been more in jeopardy. On February 2nd, the South Carolina Arts Alliance will host Arts Advocacy Day – a special opportunity to celebrate the arts – to gather with colleagues and legislators – and to express support for state funding of the arts and arts education! Meet us at the Statehouse, 1st floor lobby (enter at the Sumter Street side) by 11:30 AM, to pick up one of our ART WORKS IN SOUTH CAROLINA “hard-hats” and advocacy buttons to wear. If you already have a hat or button, please bring them! We’ll greet Legislators as they arrive on the 1st floor and 2nd floors. From the chamber galleries, you can view the arts being recognized on the House and Senate floors. You may want to “call out” your legislator to let him or her know you are at the Statehouse and plan to attend the Legislative Appreciation Luncheon. Then join arts leaders and legislators at the Legislative Appreciation Luncheon honoring the Legislative Arts Caucus. -

Post-Presidential Speeches • Fort Pitt Chapter, Association of the United States Army, May 31, 1961 General Hay, Members of the Fort Pitt Chapter, Association of the United States Army: On June 6, 1944, the United States undertook, on the beaches of Normandy, one of its greatest military adventures on its long history. Twenty-seven years before, another American Army had landed in France with the historic declaration, “Lafayette, we are here.” But on D-Day, unlike the situation in 1917, the armed forces of the United States came not to reinforce an existing Western front, but to establish one. D-Day was a team effort. No service, no single Allied nation could have done the job alone. But it was in the nature of things that the Army should establish the beachhead, from which the over-running of the enemy in Europe would begin. Success, and all that it meant to the rights of free people, depended on the men who advanced across the ground, and by their later advances, rolled back the might of Nazi tyranny. That Army of Liberation was made up of Americans and Britons and Frenchmen, of Hollanders, Belgians, Poles, Norwegians, Danes and Luxembourgers. The American Army, in turn, was composed of Regulars, National Guardsmen, Reservists and Selectees, all of them reflecting the vast panorama of American life. This Army was sustained in the field by the unparalleled industrial genius and might of a free economy, organized by men such as yourselves, joined together voluntarily for the common defense. Beyond the victory achieved by this combined effort lies the equally dramatic fact of achieving Western security by cooperative effort.
