The meeting with the mendicant The trope of the 3 ‘signs’ in literary accounts of the Buddha’s life 1st sign: Sickness (the Buddha sees a sick person) 2nd sign: Old age (the Buddha sees an old person) 3rd sign: Death (the Buddha sees a corpse) (an optional 4th sign: the mendicant) The four stages of life (ashrama-s) • The First Ashrama - "Brahmacharya" or the Student Stage • The Second Ashrama - "Grihastha" or the Householder Stage • The Third Ashrama - "Vanaprastha" or the Hermit Stage • The Fourth Ashrama - "Sannyasa" or the Wandering Ascetic Stage The Buddha’s progress to ‘Awakening’ in Pali accounts The growth of the bodhisattva’s insight appears to have been based on his pre-awakening investigation of the dependent arising of duḥkha. Other discourses describe his examination of the true nature of feelings, of the four elements, of the five aggregates, of the six senses and their objects, and of the world. These passages thus highlight various aspects of Gautama’s development of insight, which in turn became facets of the comprehensive realization he attained on the night of his awakening. Gautama’s motivation in Pali Sources “Being myself subject to old age … and death, now suppose I were to search for what is free from old age … and death, for the unsurpassable peace from bondage, Nirvāṇa.”- Ariyapariyesanā-sutta, “Being myself truly subject to old age and death … suppose I were to search … for what is free from old age and death … for the unsurpassable peace from bondage, Nirvāṇa.”- Madhyama- āgama Gautama’s Marvelous Qualities in Pali Sources • Instead of compassion, the emphasis in the early discourses is on a range of other qualities of the bodhisattva • Mention several remarkable events that took place during the Buddha’s youth and after his awakening, highlighting (among other qualities) his ability to be aware of the arising, continuity and disappearance of feelings, perceptions and thoughts (“insight”). The already perfected Buddha • In some Pali texts, the Buddha’s life is filled with descriptions of his experience of various mental defilements, such as fear and sensual desire. • Later strata of both Pali and Sanskrit texts instead reflect a Buddha who is already accomplished at birth! • If he is already accomplished at birth, accomplishments had to occur in previous lives, thus his accomplishments had to be moved back to previous lifetimes in literary narratives. Compassion and the Bodhisattva ideal in Pali Buddhism • The early discourses that describe the period from ‘going forth’ to ‘awakening’ indicate that Gautama’s chief concern (motivation) was to find liberation for himself. • His compassionate concern for others appears to have arisen only as a consequence of his awakening, instead of having motivated his quest for liberation. The Bodhisattva ideal in Mahayana Buddhism • Mahayana Buddhists, like many of their Theravada counterparts accepted that the Buddha was already accomplished at birth (and thus compassion arose early in his life) • Modeled on this interpretation, in Mahayana Buddhism you find an emphasis on what is called the Bodhisattva ideal: that one should strive to attain enlightenment—not for oneself—but for others. • This compassionate motivation is sometimes called bodhi-citta (“spirit of awakening”) The Buddha’s Enlightenment Regardless of at what point precisely the Buddha is considered to be ‘accomplished’ one common emphasis in all stories surrounding the moment of the Buddha’s enlightenment is his practice of meditation Mahabodhi Temple Tree, Bodh Gaya (India) The role of meditation in Buddhism • The Buddha allegedly attained enlightenment after meditating for 40 days under what became called the ‘bodhi’ tree • In monasteries and nunneries, meditation historically has been common and remains common (though not practiced by all) • Historically meditation was not commonly practiced by many lay followers. Meditation in lay Buddhist practice has resurged in modern times due to contact with Western countries Buddhist forms of meditation • Samatha (Pali) /Shamatha (Sanskrit) “Calm” or “Calm-abiding” • Vipassana (Pali)/ Vipashyana (Sanskrit) “Insight” “Calm-abiding” meditation • Mindfulness of breath, body • Resting the mind on an ‘object’ of meditation in order to attain a sense of deep calming meditative ‘absorption’ (jhana/dhyana) Common Buddhist Objects for calm-abiding meditation • Various forms of Counting • Following the breath through the body • Locations on the body, such as the nostrils, chakra-s or channels, • ‘elements’ of the body (earth, water, fire, and air/wind) • Light sources (candles, offering lamps) • Statues or other depictions of the Buddha or of Bodhisattvas “Insight” meditation • Mindfulness of breath, body • The mind is either directed towards • Cultivating the mind, training it towards the process of “insight”. Which can be done in several ways. • For some practices, the meditator is instructed to simple be mindful of the breath and both label and deconstruct thoughts as they arise. • In other practices, the mind is encouraged to go through an analytical kind of process on various topics Common Buddhist “Insight” meditation practices • Meditating on the nature of the self; deconstructing the ‘self’ or other similar phenomena (i.e. emptiness, dependent origination, 5 aggregates etc.) •

On June 26, 2002, the Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodh Gaya was formally inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. As a place of cultural heritage and a monument of “outstanding universal value” this inclusion has reinforced the ancient significance of Bodh Gaya as the place of Buddha's enlightenment. In this dissertation, I take this recent event as a framing device for my historical and ethnographic analysis that details the varying ways in which Bodh Gaya is constructed out of a particular set of social relations. How do different groups attach meaning to Bodh Gaya's space and negotiate the multiple claims and memories embedded in place? How is Bodh Gaya socially constructed as a global site of memory and how do contests over its spatiality im- plicate divergent histories, narratives and events? In order to delineate the various historical and spatial meanings that place holds for different groups I examine a set of interrelated transnational processes that are the focus of this dissertation: 1) the emergence of Buddhist monasteries, temples and/or guest houses tied to international pilgrimage; 2) the role of tourism and pilgrimage as a source of economic livelihood for local residents; and 3) the role of state tourism development and urban planning.

    THE SUTRA ON AMITĀYUS BUDDHA DELIVERED BY ŚĀKYAMUNI BUDDHA Translated into Chinese during the Yao-Qin Dynasty by Tripiṭaka Master Kumārajīva of Kucha 1 Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove monastery of Anāthapiṇḍada’s Garden at Śrāvastī, together with a large assem - bly of twelve hundred and fifty monks who were all great arhats well known to the people. Among them were great disciples such as the elders Śāriputra, 346c Mahā maud galyā yana, Mahākāśyapa, Mahākātyāyana, Mahākauṣṭhila, Revata, Śuddhipanthaka, Nanda, Ānanda, Rāhula, Gavāṃpati, Piṇḍola-Bhāradvāja, Kālodayin, Mahākapphiṇa, Vakkula, and Aniruddha. He was also accompanied by many bodhisattva mahāsattva s, such as Dharma Prince Mañjuśrī, Ajita Bodhisattva, Sweet-smelling Elephant Bodhisattva, and Constant Endeavor Bodhisattva, and by innumerable deva s, including Śakra, lord of the gods, and many others. 2 The Buddha then said to Elder Śāriputra: “If you travel westward from here, passing a hundred thousand koṭi s of buddha lands, you will come to the land called Utmost Bliss, where there is a buddha named Amitāyus. 38 He is living there now, teaching the Dharma. 3 “Śāriputra, why is that land called Utmost Bliss? The beings in that land suffer no pain but only enjoy pleasures of various kinds. For this reason, that land is called Utmost Bliss. Again, Śāriputra, in the Land of Utmost Bliss there are seven rows of balustrades, seven rows of decorative nets, and seven rows of trees. They are all made of four kinds of jewels and extend over the whole land, encompassing everything. For this reason, that land is called Utmost Bliss.

Conventionally, these ṣaḍvārgika monks are portrayed as evil figures whose behaviours have subsequently become exemplary of monastic violations in Vina- ya literature. In this article, I discover a neglected alternative discourse in which the ṣaḍvārgika monks are perceived as supporters of Buddhism who were well educated in various secular and religious subjects. Specifically, this study reveals that the authors of two Chinese texts Lüjie benshu 律戒本疏 (T2788) and Guan wuliangshou jing yishu 觀無量壽經義疏 (T1749) argued that the ṣaḍvārgika monks are noble figures who had purposefully acted out various misdeeds to facilitate the promulgation of the Buddhist monastic law, which only becomes necessary when the situation requires it. Key words: Vinaya, ṣaḍvārgika, Band of Six, Monastic Law. Introduction Buddhism has established its monastic rules based on incidents that the Buddha has declared unlawful. Vinaya texts from various Buddhist traditions hold the ṣaḍvārgika monks accountable for most of these unlawful deeds and depict them as morally cor- rupted monastics. Likewise, they also accuse a band of six or twelve nuns of notorious deeds identical with those of the monks.1 Such negative interpretations have survived * I thank Leonard W. Although each school has look similar robes such as colour, the way of sewing but there have much more different between them. The Theravāda monks from Myanmar who wear robes are not similar place and school with each others. So in this study, the researcher will be analysis the robes which related to Theravāda monks according to Piṭaka. The topic will be related monastic robe and its colour. This involves acquaintance with a wide range of South Asian texts and their historical contexts, and theoretical reflection on the conditions of understanding and interpreting these texts. These goals are met through departmental seminars and advanced language courses, which lead up to the dissertation project. The Department admits applications only for the Ph.D. degree, although graduate students in the doctoral program may receive an M.A. degree in the course of their work toward the Ph.D. Students admitted to the doctoral program are awarded a six-year fellowship package that includes full tuition, academic year stipends, stipends for some summers, and medical insurance. Focusing on his extended commentary on Yogasūtra I.20 in his Bengali magnum opus, the Pātañjaljogdarśan (1911), I argue that his interpretation of smṛti is quasi- Buddhistic. On the one hand, Harihara¯nanda’s conception of smṛti as mindfulness resonates strongly with some of the views on smṛti advanced in classic Buddhist texts such as the Satipaṭṭhānasutta and Buddaghos´a’s Papañcasūdanī. On the other hand, he also builds into his complex account of the practice of smṛti certain fundamental doctrines of Sa¯mkhyayoga—such as mindfulness of the Lord ˙ (“īśvara”) and mental identification with the Puruṣa, the transcendental “Self” that is wholly independent of nature—which are incompatible with Buddhist meta- physics. I will then bring Harihara¯nanda’s quasi-Buddhistic interpretation of smṛti of Yogasūtra I.20 into dialogue with some of the interpretations of smṛti advanced by traditional commentators. Whereas many traditional commentators such as Va¯caspati Mis´ra and Vijn˜a¯nabhiksu straightforwardly identify smṛti of I.20 with ˙ “dhyāna” (“concentration”)—the seventh limb of the aṣṭāṇgayoga outlined in Yogasūtra II.28-III.7—Harihara¯nanda argues that smṛti is the mental precondition for the establishment of dhyāna of the aṣṭāṇgayoga.

Vol. 32.2: 113-151 thomas j. mazanec How Poetry Became Meditation in Late-Ninth-Century China abstract: In late-ninth-century China, poetry and meditation became equated — not just meta- phorically, but as two equally valid means of achieving stillness and insight. This article discusses how several strands in literary and Buddhist discourses fed into an assertion about such a unity by the poet-monk Qiji 齊己 (864–937?). One strand was the aesthetic of kuyin 苦吟 (“bitter intoning”), which involved intense devotion to poetry to the point of suffering. At stake too was the poet as “fashioner” — one who helps make and shape a microcosm that mirrors the impersonal natural forces of the macrocosm. Jia Dao 賈島 (779–843) was crucial in popularizing this sense of kuyin. Concurrently, an older layer of the literary-theoretical tradition, which saw the poet’s spirit as roaming the cosmos, was also given new life in late Tang and mixed with kuyin and Buddhist meditation.
