Positive psychology is the positive half of psychological science. As such, it will end up as composing half of almost every chapter in an Introductory Psychology textbook. Objectives • To provide an overview of the major subfields of positive psychology • To highlight and discuss the importance of emotional, cognitive, and prosocial factors which could make one’s life more meaningful. • To gain a deeper insight in the current research focused on pleasure, joy, creativity, self-efficacy, flow, well-being, etc. • To discuss how positive changes can be made in one’s life by thinking and behaving positively • To get an understanding of the valued personal experiences in the past, in the present and for the future contributing to personal satisfaction and happiness. • To identify and use positive emotions and strengths to spark personal growth. • To use the knowledge obtained through the Positive Psychology course to promote the development of those positive features of human psychology, by guiding both individuals and the institutions within which they function. Learning Outcomes • After completion of this course the students will be able to: • Understand the importance of personal experiences and traits contributing toward greater subjective well-being. • Improve their relationships and interaction with others. • Conquer or reduce stress in life. • To develop a deeper insight in the current research focused on human strengths and virtues. Positive psychology is the scientific and practical pursuit of optimal human functioning and it augments psychology’s long-term focus on weakness and illness. Positive psychology efforts underway to shift focus from preoccupation only with repairing the worst things in life to also building positive qualities while traditional focus in psychology has been on pathology Asks fundamental questions: o What kinds of families result in children who flourish? o What work settings support the greatest satisfaction among workers? o What policies result in the strongest civic engagement? o How can people’s lives be most worth living? ©Copyright Virtual University of Pakistan 2 Positive Psychology (PSY409) Dimensions of Positive Psychology The range of possible interest areas in positive psychology is quite large, however, some broad dimensions have been used to define the new area in general way. In order to nurture talent and make life more fulfilling, positive psychology focuses on three areas of human experience that help to define the scope and orientation of a positive psychology perspective. Subjective level At the subjective level, positive psychology looks at positive subjective states or positive emotions such as happiness, joy, satisfaction with life, relaxation, love intimacy, and contentment. Positive subjective states also can include constructive thoughts about the self and the future, such as optimism and hope. Positive subjective states may also include feelings of energy, vitality, and confidence, or the effects of positive emotions such as laughter. Individual Level At the individual level, positive psychology focuses on a study of positive individual traits, or the more enduring and persistent behavior patterns seen in people over time. This study might include individual traits such as courage, persistence, honesty, or wisdom. That is, positive psychology includes the study of positive behaviors and traits that historically have been used to define “character strengths” or virtues. It can also include the ability to develop aesthetic sensibility or tap into creative potentials and the drive to pursue excellence. Society/Group Level At the group or societal level, positive psychology focuses on the development, creation, and maintenance of positive institutions. In this area, positive psychology addresses issues such as the development of civic virtues, the creation of healthy families, the study of healthy work environments, and positive communities. Psychology’s Forgotten Mission Psychology has not always focused on the adaptable, the healthy, and the positive aspects of humanity. In fact, for many years professional psychology largely ignored the study of the positive side of human behavior. Seligman (2000) noted that prior to World War II there were only three major missions in psychology: o The first early mission of psychology was to cure mental illness. The terrible consequences of mental illness for many people, their families, and the community demanded that psychology use the methods of science to seek solutions to this problem. o The second early mission of psychology was to find and nurture genius and talent. Many of the early studies in this area focused on the development of intelligence. o The third early mission of psychology was to make normal life more fulfilling. Obviously, there is more to living a satisfied and happy life than simply getting one’s immediate needs met in a reasonable amount of time. Treating mental illness aspect was remarkably successful, in the early 1950s, however no real cures existed for mental illness. Human beings were perceived as passive creatures in face of childhood repressed impulses, environmental influences or genetic factors. Psychologists started curing damaged brains, damaged childhood, damaged habits, damaged drives. Face of Psychology changed after War and last two missions were forgotten.     Your Sadness, My Sorrow: Negative Emotion Concordance within Married Couples in China Wanru Xiong Office of Population Research Princeton University Abstract: This paper finds significant evidence for negative emotion concordance within married couples age 45 and above in China using CHARLS data. To understand the mechanism of such concordance and test the hypothesis of emotional contagion effect, I applied instrument variable method, structure equation model and fixed effect model in this dyadic relation context. The results confirm the effect of spouse’s negative emotion on the respondent’s and support the emotional contagion effect hypothesis. In general, wives tend to be more sensitive to the emotional condition of their husband. Keywords: dyadic relation; negative emotion; concordance; emotional contagion effect 1. Introduction “I will laugh with you and cry with you ... in sickness and in health, till death do us apart.” Couples mean it when they take their wedding vows. There is evidence of health concordance within married couples, which means couples’ health conditions, both physical and mental, tend to converge after marriage (Meyler, Stimpson and Peek, 2007). This phenomenon of health concordance within couples is drawing increasing research interests. Published findings of physical health concordance within couples include concordance in blood pressure (Beresford, 1976; Speers et al., 1986; Peek and Markides, 2003; Stimpson and Peek, 2005), chronic conditions (Cheraskin et al., 1968; Bookwala and Schulz, 1996; Ubeda, 1998; Stimpson and Peek, 2005) and obesity (Inoue et al., 1996; Knuiman et al., 1996). Among the growing number of papers on health concordance within couples, studies on depressive symptoms and distress are the most prevalent (Meyler, Stimpson and Peek, 2007).

Here is a list of primary emotions: Eight Primary Emotions Anger: fury, outrage, wrath, irritability, hostility, resentment and violence. Sadness: grief, sorrow, gloom, melancholy, despair, loneliness, and depression. Fear: anxiety, apprehension, nervousness, dread, fright, and panic. Joy: enjoyment, happiness, relief, bliss, delight, pride, thrill, and ecstasy. Interest: acceptance, friendliness, trust, kindness, affection, love, and devotion. Surprise: shock, astonishment, amazement, astound, and wonder. Disgust: contempt, disdain, scorn, aversion, distaste, and revulsion. Shame: guilt, embarrassment, chagrin, remorse, regret, and contrition. All other emotions are made up by combining these basic 8 emotions. Sometimes we have secondary emotions, an emotional reaction to an emotion. We learn these. Some examples of these are: o Feeling shame when you get angry. o Feeling angry when you have a shame response (e.g., hurt feelings). o Feeling fear when you get angry (maybe you’ve been punished for anger). There are many more. These are NOT wired into our bodies and brains, but are learned from our families, our culture, and others. When you have a secondary emotion, the key is to figure out what the primary emotion, the feeling at the root of your reaction is, so that you can take an action that is most helpful. .

Efforts have been made to treat psychological distress in CAD with both conventional methods, such as antidepressant drugs and psychotherapy, and non-conventional methods, such as stress management courses. However, studies focusing on the experiences of mindfulness training in this population are still scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore immediate experiences of mindfulness practice among CAD patients with depressive symptoms. Methods: A qualitative content analysis of diary entries, written immediately after practice sessions and continuously during an 8-week long Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course (MBSR), was applied. Results: Twelve respondents participated in the study. The main category: a journey through chaos and calmness captured the participants’ concurrent experiences of challenges and rewards over time. This journey appears to reflect a progressive development culminating in the harvesting of the fruits of practice at the end of the mindfulness training. Descriptions of various challenging facets of mindfulness practice – both physical and psychological - commonly occurred during the whole course, although distressing experiences were more predominant during the first half. Furthermore, the diary entries showed a wide variety of ways of dealing with these struggles, including both constructive and less constructive strategies of facing difficult experiences.

    Fall 08 Dell Children's Medical Center January 2015 Shame, Relevant Neurobiology, and Treatment Implications Arlene Montgomery Ph.D., LCSW Shame Guilt Early-forming (before age two) Must have concept of another (2 yrs+) Implicit memory (amygdala) Explicit memory (upper right & left hemi) Arousal involves entire body: Arousal is an upper cortex, primarily left, • excitement state of worry • painful arousal (SNS) • counter-regulate (PNS) • positive outcome = repair • negative outcome = no repair; lingering in PNS state Non-narrative (not conscious) Narrative (conscious experience) • a state of being: "I am something..." • "I did something" e.g., bad, worthless, flawed as a whole • an act person Runs away from further external Seeks to maintain attachments interactions, but cannot run away from the internal representations of the scorn of the other - an internal experience Shame states may engage the freeze Guilt experiences may engage the more (dissociated, passive) state or flight activated fight states ( not actually fighting, state(hiding, other avoidant behaviors) or but actively making thing right, correcting submit state(agreeing, becoming invisible, mistakes, engaging the milieu in some way complying) to manage the painful arousal to address the “bad act, moving toward…) Repaired shame is a normative socialization experience (Schore, 2003 a,b) Relational trauma may result from unrepaired shame experiences "corroded connections", (B.
