We report upon the amphibians collected during seven expeditions carried out between the years 2000–2006 to thirteen localities in both Refugio de Vida Silvestre Río San Juan and Reserva Biológica Indio-Maíz, southeastern Nicaragua. We include morphometric data of around one-half of the adult specimens in the collection, and provide a brief general overview and discuss zoogeographic and conservation considerations of the amphibians known to occur in the Río San Juan area. Keywords. Amphibia, conservation, ecology, morphometry, zoogeography. Introduction potential of holding America’s first interoceanic channel and also because it was part of the sea route to travel The San Juan River is an approximately 200 km slow- from eastern to western United States.

  • Of the Scinax Ruber Clade from Cerrado of Central Brazil
Amphibia-Reptilia 31 (2010): 411-418 A new species of small Scinax Wagler, 1830 (Amphibia, Anura, Hylidae) of the Scinax ruber clade from Cerrado of central Brazil Manoela Woitovicz Cardoso, José P. Pombal Jr. Abstract. A new species of the Scinax ruber clade from the Brazilian Cerrado Domain similar to Scinax fuscomarginatus, S. parkeri, S. trilineatus and S. wandae is described. It is characterized by small snout-vent lenght, body slender, head approximately as long as wide and slightly wider than body, subovoid snout in dorsal view, protruding snout in lateral view, a developed supratympanic fold, absence of flash colour on the posterior surfaces of thighs, hidden portions of shanks and groin, and large vocal sac. Scinax lutzorum sp. nov. differs from S. fuscomarginatus, S. parkeri and S. trilineatus by its slightly larger SVL; from Scinax fuscomarginatus and S. parkeri it differs by its more slender body; from Scinax fuscomarginatus and S. trilineatus the new species differs by its wider head and more protruding eyes; and it differs from Scinax parkeri and S. wandae by its shorter snout. Comments on the type specimens of S. fuscomarginatus are presented and a lectotype is designated for this species. Keywords: lectotype, new species, Scinax fuscomarginatus, Scinax lutzorum. The third chapter of the series about Rudolf Schlechter’s South-American orchids presents concise biographical information about those botanists and orchid collectors who were related to Schlechter and worked in north and northeastern Brazil, as well as in the three Guianas. As an introduction, a brief geographical outline is presented, dividing the northern territories in four zones: the Amazon basin, the Araguaia-Tocantins river basin, the Northeast region and the Guianas. It is followed by a short mention of the historical milestones in the history of orchids in these regions during the preceding centuries. In this study, we aimed to determine the factors influencing nest site selection during nest relocation which is regularly promoted by hurricanes in this area. Using ants with and without previous experience of Ae. bracteata, we tested their preference for refuges consisting of Ae. bracteata leaves over two other bromeliads, Ae. bromeliifolia and Ananas comosus. We further evaluated bromeliad-associated traits that could influence nest site selection (form and size). Workers with and without previous contact with Ae. bracteata significantly preferred this species over others, suggesting the existence of an innate attraction to this bromeliad. However, preference was not influenced by previous contact with Ae. bracteata. Workers easily discriminated between shelters of Ae. bracteata and A.

  • Schomburgkia Humboldtii - Laelia Humboldtii (Rchb.F.) L.O
Nederlandse Orchideeën Vereniging – Orchitheek 1 Uitgave: Nederlandse Orchideeën Vereniging. Auteursrechten voorbehouden Myrmecophila humboldtii (Rchb.f.) Rolfe Synoniem: - Schomburgkia humboldtii - Laelia humboldtii (Rchb.f.) L.O. Wms. - Epidendrum humboldtii Rchb.f.

  • Taxonomic Revision of Pseudolaelia Porto & Brade (Laeliinae
Acta Botanica Brasilica 27(2): 418-435. 2013. Taxonomic revision of Pseudolaelia Porto & Brade (Laeliinae, Orchidaceae)1 Luiz Menini Neto2,5, Rafaela Campostrini Forzza3 and Cassio van den Berg4 Submitted: 14 September, 2011. Accepted: 7 March, 2013 ABSTRACT Pseudolaelia is a genus endemic to eastern Brazil. The species are often epiphytes on Velloziaceae or are saxicolous, predominantly on granitic and gneissic outcrops (inselbergs) in the Atlantic Forest and, less often, in the campos rupestres (dry, rocky grasslands) of the cerrado (savanna) and caatinga (shrublands). The genus is characterized by homoblastic pseudobulbs, long rhizomes, long and usually slender inflorescences, racemes or panicles, bearing pink, yellow or whitish flowers, labellum often 3-lobed, with simple, fimbriate or erose margin, semi-cylindrical or claviform column, cuniculus present. Twelve species are recognized; seven binomials are placed in synonymy. Of those seven, three are considered illegitimate because, contrary to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature guidelines, there are no corresponding type specimens deposited in a recognized herbarium, and those three were therefore lectotypified. We present descriptions of, illustrations of and a dichotomous key to Pseudolaelia species, as well as addressing their taxonomy, ecology, conservation and geographic distribution. Key words: Eastern Brazil, campo rupestre, conservation, inselberg, taxonomy Introduction Ruschi (1946) established the genus Renata, describing the species R. canaanensis Ruschi, and publishing, in the Pseudolaelia Porto & Brade is a member of the subfamily same decade, P. dutrae Ruschi (Ruschi 1949), both from Epidendroideae, tribe Epidendreae, subtribe Laeliinae, and the mountains of the state of Espírito Santo. Pabst (1967) was defined as a monophyletic genus by van den Berg et al.
