This program allows each lodge to have an avenue to raise funds for charitable purposes by offering a tax deduction on individual donations. Ray Mancini was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio and fol- lowed his father Lenny Mancini, who also was a noted Italian-Amer- ican boxer and of course a great supporter to his son. Ray worshiped his father and authored a book called ‘The Good Son”. “Not because my father wanted me to be that, because he tried to talk me out of it in the worst way. He told me, it was the Depression, he had to eat. He had to fight. For me, …... I had other opportunities. But I wanted to be a professional fighter for (my father). I wanted to win the world title for him. So he couldn’t say a whole lot to that. We’re known through our history in boxing. It’s been a very strong tradition.” Ray revealed that his mother was Irish and to appease her heritage he had sewn an Irish shamrock inside his boxing shorts. Many of the Italian immigrants coming to America were faced with the Great Depression and took jobs as construction laborers, artists, and professional sportsmen to feed their families. Ray Mancini fol- lowed his father and his heart. Ray revealed that his true family name is Mancino but was changed when his father turned as a professional Roma Lodge junior members fighter. Mancino in Italian means left handed which Ray was a left- conduct lodge business at the hand fighter during his career. August meeting. In the 1970s and 80s when he fought professional, the surrounding states were devastated by the closure of steel and coal mills resulted in tens of thousands of people losing their jobs. He provided a spark of hope showing that his determination and abilities were able to help them forget about their tragedies while they cheered him on the way to the title. He talked about his Italian heritage and culture and how our youth has lost their identities by not being able to understand and embrace what Italian Americans contributed to our great nation. He advised them to dream big have passion and take action. Ray Mancini is truly a sports hero and benefactor to all. He has set up his Foundation which the main objective and goals of the Founda- tion are to sponsor events that benefit either other charities or individuals and families in need. Also honoring Ray Mancini was the Italian-American Social Club of Las Vegas Nevada, Italian-American Federation of Los Angeles, the Italian-American social Club of Phoenix Arizona and the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club. The tournament took a little bit longer than anticipated because my better half, Chris, was not there but Manny Finazzo did a fantastic job in his stead. Having a Bocce Tournament is a great way to get our Brothers and Sisters of the Order together to visit and rekindle time that has gone by. We relish the tournament as a bonding agent that makes us become closer together in an activity of skill. We would not be as successful as we are, notably, for the dedicated help we receive every year when called upon. The referees are a won- derful bred that takes on the various players and their followers for they are the decision makers and we appreciate their loyalty of helping every year without any compensation. My deepest gratitude to Manny Finazzo who acted in Chris’ place did a magnificent job in handling the various assignments, Bill Murphy and Lou Lodi who put the courts together and refereed, Joe La Banca, Al Girolami, Ted Seibel, Gabe Domenici, Muro Romangnali, John Costra and Ugo Pignati without them we would still be at the Nugget Hotel. Many, many thanks to my daughter, Carla, who did all the running around to make sure all was in place for the tournament. But also, for her driving me to Sparks to be at the convention. Without her would have been a disaster. Hopefully more lodges will enter next year in Fresno, also, individu- als may enter as well, we will make up teams so don’t despair whether you are one, two or three we will make it work.
