This article discusses the software architecture of an autonomous robotic system designed to explore and map abandoned mines. We have built a robot capable of au- tonomously exploring abandoned mines. A new set of software tools is presented, enabling robots to acquire maps of unprecedented size and accuracy. On May 30, 2003, our robot “Groundhog” successfully explored and mapped a main corridor of the abandoned Mathies mine near Courtney, PA. The article also discusses some of the challenges that arise in the subterraneans environments, and some the difficulties of building truly autonomous robots. 1 Introduction In recent years, the quest to find and explore new, unexplored terrain has led to the deploy- ment of more and more sophisticated robotic systems, designed to traverse increasingly remote locations. Robotic systems have successfully explored volcanoes [5], searched meteorites in Antarctica [1, 44], traversed deserts [3], explored and mapped the sea bed [12], even explored other planets [26]. This article presents a robot system designed to explore spaces much closer to us: abandoned underground mines. According to a recent survey [6], “tens of thousands, perhaps even hundreds of thousands, of abandoned mines exist today in the United States. -

Scott Dunbar Received: 7 April 2016; Accepted: 7 June 2016; Published: 13 June 2016 Abstract: Microorganisms have developed various mechanisms to deal with metals, thus providing numerous tools that can be used in biohydrometallurgical processes. “Biomining” processes—including bioleaching and biooxidation processes—facilitate the degradation of minerals, accompanied by a release of metals. These processes are especially attractive for low-grade ores and are used on an industrial scale mainly for sulfidic ores. In biosorption processes, biomass or certain biomolecules are used to bind and concentrate selected ions or other molecules from aqueous solutions. Biosorptive materials can be an environmentally friendly and efficient alternative to conventional materials, such as ion exchange resins. Other interesting mechanisms are bioaccumulation, bioflotation, bioprecipitation, and biomineralisation. Although these processes are well-known and have been studied in detail during the last decades, the recent strong progress of biotechnologies (e.g., genetic engineering and molecule design), as well as their combination with novel developments in material sciences (e.g., nanotechnologies) facilitate new strategies for the application of biotechnologies in mineral processing. -
Treatment of Disused Lead Mine Shafts
Cover: The many surviving lead mining shafts and sites of Derbyshire and the Peak District feature a wide variety of conservation interests. As shown here (top left - David Webb) shafts provide access for cave exploration, though a safe method of access may need to be provided as shown here (bottom right – Ian Gates). On the surface there is archaeological interest in the waste hillocks and other structure (top right John Humble) and specialist plant communities survive that include metal tolerant species such as this spring sandwort (bottom left – John Humble). Shafts were often lined with a dry stone walling known as ginging (centre right – David Webb) which can be vulnerable to damage when they are capped. No. 2 GEOLOGY OF COAL OVERBURDEN 75 METHODS AND RESULTS OF STRIP-MINE RECLAMATION IN GERMANY1 WILHELM KNABE2 Federal Research Organization for Forestry and Forest Products, Reinbek Hamburg, Germany All over the world industry is growing rapidly. This growth includes a great increase of surface mining or strip mining, as you call it. In the last 20 years, it has increased much more than underground mining, which, in some of the old industrial countries, is decreasing substantially. A number of factors have con- tributed to this trend; these include the development of heavy equipment, lower costs, more complete recovery of the coal, and smaller labor requirements. The American strip mines for bituminous coal and the German opencast mines for brown coal (also called lignite) are among the most important examples. This report will present the facts and trends of mining and reclamation in Germany only; it will not at this time make any direct comparison with the situation in Ohio. As you will see, there are very different conditions and solutions, but also very similar trends and problems in the two countries. Let me take three examples.
