Significance: Druid Hills is historically significant primarily in the areas of landscape architecture~ architecture, and conununity planning. Druid Hills is the finest examp1e of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century comprehensive suburban planning and development in the Atlanta metropo 1 i tan area, and one of the finest turn-of-the-century suburbs in the southeastern United States. Druid Hills is more specifically noted because: Cl} it is a major work by the eminent landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and Ms successors, the Olmsted Brothers, and the only such work in Atlanta; (2) it is a good example of Frederick Law Olmsted 1 s principles and practices regarding suburban development; (3) its overall planning, as conceived by Frederick Law Olmsted and more fully developed by the Olmsted Brothers, is of exceptionally high quality when measured against the prevailing standards for turn-of-the-century suburbs; (4) its landscaping, also designed originally by Frederick Law Olmsted and developed more fully by the Olmsted Brothers, is, like its planning, of exceptionally high quality; (5) its actual development, as carried out oripinally by Joel Hurt's Kirkwood Land Company and later by Asa G. -

With a 62-acre campus and 13 individual buildings, students are able to learn in an environment similar to a small college. The campus is centered around a quadrangle, commonly known as the "quad". Myers Park is one of the public high schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system. The 2016-2017 enrollment is 3000+ students, making Myers Park one of the largest high schools in North Carolina. In the graduating class of 2016, 95% of its students went on to pursue their education after high school: 81% attended a four-year college or university, 14% went on to a community or technical college, and 5% joined the work force or military. Myers Park utilizes A-day/B-day, 4X4, and hybrid schedules where all students attend four, ninety- minute classes every day. The school mascot is the Mustang. Its official colors are kelly green and white. -

Phase I Reconnaissance Survey Methodology In 2012, the City of Charlotte was awarded a federal grant from the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (HPO) to conduct a Phase I (reconnaissance level) architectural survey of Charlotte. The Phase I survey is anticipated to be the first of five (two reconnaissance-level and three intensive-level) investigations of architectural resources within the central city. This project is designed to support future planning efforts as well as local historic landmark and district designations, conservation district designations, and National Register nominations. This initial Phase I survey was limited to the area within the general radius of Route 4, an eighteen-mile, partial ring road around the Charlotte’s central business district and surrounding, adjacent neighborhoods. The City of Charlotte contracted with Mattson, Alexander, and Associates, Inc. (MAA), an historic preservation consulting firm based in Charlotte, to conduct the Phase I survey. Frances P. Alexander and Richard L. Mattson were the principal investigators, and Mr. John Howard, Director of the Charlotte Historic District Commission, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Department, was the local project coordinator. The tasks completed under the Phase I scope of work are summarized below: 1) The principal investigators determined the status of existing National Register and/or locally designated resources in the survey database. -

Book Review: Field Notes Spring 2016 Issue John Nolen, Landscape Architect and City Planner by R. Bruce Stephenson. Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, in association with the Library of American Landscape History (LALH), 2015, 312 pages. Among enthusiasts of landscape and urban design, John Nolan (1869-1937) is a respected figure, but he has never become a household name, except perhaps in those households located in communities that he designed or improved. Madison, Wisconsin, for instance, named a boulevard for him. Kingsport, TN, Venice, FL, the Myers Park neighborhood of Charlotte, NC, and the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, MO are other communities whose reputations derive from the quality of his planning. Mariemont, near Cincinnati, OH has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The American Society of Landscape Architects and the Library of American Landscape History teamed up in 2005 to reprint Nolan’s book, New Towns for Old: Achievements in Civic Improvement in Some American Small Towns and Neighborhoods, originally published in 1927. This includes a list of his firm’s more than 450 completed projects, among which are plans for 29 cities and 27 new towns. Now the LALH has followed up with a full-scale biography. Its author, R. Bruce Stephenson, director of the Department of Environmental Studies and Sustainable Urbanism at Rollins College, deftly weaves Nolan’s career and personal life together with the rise of the professions of landscape architecture and urban planning. Nolan was born in Philadelphia and qualified for admission to Girard College, a distinguished school for orphan boys there, because his father had been shot during an election dispute little more than a year after his birth. -

The intact home and grounds reflect the genteel taste of the Marston Family as a whole who in the early 20th century elevated landscape settings, by example, toward city beautification in the dusty, semi-arid, coastal desert of San Diego. The Period of Significance encompasses the full occupancy of the Marston Family from 1905-1987, which reflects the completion of the house construction in 1905 to the death of daughter Mary Marston in 1987. George White Marston (1850-1946) and daughter Mary Marston (1879-1987) are the two notable family members most associated with the design and implementation of the Marston House Gardens, et al. The George W. Marston House (George White and Anna Gunn Marston House) was historically designated by the City of San Diego on 4 December 1970, Historic Site #40. -
