A Conversation with Brandi Carlile by Frank Goodman (7/2007
A Conversation with Brandi Carlile by Frank Goodman (7/2007. Puremusic.com) Raw talent vs. expensive packaging is always a pleasant surprise in the entertainment business. Brandi Carlile is the very rare exception to the rule; she and her band made their own EP, piece by piece with their own money, and Columbia ended up buying it and putting it out. Rolling Stone chose her as one of the 10 Artists to Watch in 2005. The subsequent Columbia full length debut CD contained new versions of a number of the songs from the EP. Relentless gigging leading up to the EP and through the debut had already moved her through various styles with her running twin partners, the Hanseroth Brothers. Tim and Phil had had a hard rock band called The Fighting Machinists, and they bring that honed edge to the BC sound. She is not only a vocalist that can literally do it all, the band itself moves fluidly and convincingly from flat out country right through edgy pop radio rock. She's the only artist you can see on CMT whose main cited influences are Elton John, k.d. lang, Jeff Buckley, and Radiohead. One hears all the time now about how acts getting tunes on Grey's Anatomy can practically launch their career, but in BC's case, there was a Grey's episode that actually debuted a version of the video for Brandi's big song "The Story." Overall, no less than four of her songs have been used in the show. She's hot, super talented, and a driven workaholic. -
Changes to Rule 5.5B1, Extent of Item for Notated Music
CC:DA/MLA/2011/2 May 12, 2011 page 1 of 5 To: ALA/ALCTS/CCS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access From: Mark Scharff, Music Library Association liaison to CC:DA Subject: Change to RDA 7.24 and Glossary, Artistic and/or Technical Credit The Bibliographic Control Committee of the Music Library Association requests CC:DA’S endorsement of the proposed revision to the text of Resource Description and Access (RDA). We ask for your consideration and endorsement at the 2011 Annual Meeting so that the proposal may be considered by the Joint Steering Committee at their November meeting. This proposal has been reviewed by members of OLAC’s Cataloging Policy Advisory Committee (CAPC). As mentioned at the end of the document, CC:DA may wish to broaden the scope of this proposal; if that is the case, we hope for timely action. Background Music catalogers have traditionally recorded information on music producers and engineers deemed to be significant in a note, according to AACR2 rule 6.7B6, Statements of Responsibility. Such information has been accommodated in MARC field 508 $a, Creation/Production Credits Note. Furthermore, music catalogers have often found it prudent to trace the names of producers and engineers in added entries, for enhanced access. As presently written, RDA 7.24 restricts the recording of this information to motion pictures and video recordings, thereby limiting catalog users’ access to this information in the realm of sound recordings. Rationale RDA 7.24 and the Glossary currently define Artistic and/or Technical Credit as “a listing of persons, families, or corporate bodies making contributions to the artistic and/or technical production of a motion picture or video recording other than as performers, narrators, or presenters.” MLA proposes that the Glossary definition and Basic Instructions on recording artistic and/or technical credits (7.24.1) be expanded to include sound recording producers and engineers. -

NO BALLAD, NO CRY dele began writing new material for her follow- up record in April 2009. But not before she agreed to take a fl yer as an actress with a guest shot on the hit tele vi- sion sitcom Ugly Betty. It seemed like a harm- Aless diversion from all the drama and pressure in her life. She reasoned, how hard could it be to play herself? In the episode, Betty is dancing with her husband at their wedding when the couple is suddenly interrupted by Adele. Th ere is some harmless banter and the next thing we know Adele is up on stage singing the song “Right As Rain.” Adele realized that that kind of promotion in America was well worth the eff ort, but would later acknowledge in Vogue that the Ugly Betty experience cured her of any future acting aspirations. “I can’t watch it. I was so uncomfortable. I am the worst actress of all time.” But Adele was thankful for the momentary respite from Marc Shapiro her day job as singer-songwriter on the rise. -

A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia by Laura
The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia by Laura L. Bunting-Hudson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2017 © 2017 Laura L. Bunting-Hudson All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia Laura L. Bunting-Hudson How do rap artists in Bogota, Colombia come together to make music? What is the process they take to commodify their culture? Why are some rappers able to become socially mobile in this process, while others are less so? What is technology’s role in all of this? This ethnography explores those questions, as it carefully documents the strategies utilized by various rap groups in Bogota, Colombia to create social mobility, commoditize products and to create a different vision of modernity within the hip-hop community, as an alternative to the ideals set forth by mainstream Colombian society. Resistance Art Poetry (RAP), is said to have originated in the United States but has become a form of international music. In conducting ethnographic research from December of 2012 to October 2014, I was able to discover how rappers organize themselves politically, how they commoditize their products and distribute them to create various types of social mobilities. In this dissertation, I constructed models to typologize rap groups in Bogota, Colombia, which I call polities of rappers to discuss how these groups come together, take shape, make plans and execute them to reach their business goals. -

Abstract Jordan III, Augustus W. B.S. Florida A&M University, 1994 A
Abstract Jordan III, Augustus W. B.S. Florida A&M University, 1994 A Study of Language and Ideology in Rap Music Advisor: Dr. O. Osinubi Dissertation Dated June 5,1998 This study examined the language of Hip-Hop songs and ideology of the artists as reflected through their songs. The study was based on the theory that Hip-Hop or rap songs are legitimate artforms because of their use of poetic elements such as figuration, figures of sound, symbolism, and ambiguity. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of a few current rap songs for the purpose of investigating their poetical and ideological elements. The researcher found signification battles by some rap artists as the best examples of songs which express the richness and complexity of Hip-Hop music. The researcher found that both Hip-Hop music lyrics and standard poetry have many similarities, but also have a few different features which enhance their uniqueness. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that the main reason many critics do not consider Hip-Hop or rap music an artform, is that they either compare the music to something extremely different, or they simply do not take the time to listen to its songs. Rap Music is an artform that expresses poetic elements and utilizes electronic devices, thus making it a Postmodernist popular artform. Through the research, the researcher showed that rap music lyrics also have intense meaning, just like poetry. 2 A STUDY OF LANGUAGE AND IDEOLOGY IN RAP MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN AFRICAN AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES BY AUGUSTUS JORDAN III SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES ATLANTA,GA JULY 1998 R -111 P-Jfl © 1998 AUGUSTUS W. -

MILLIYON Lights Are Spotlighted
MILLIYON Lights are spotlighted. Cheers are echoed. Crowds are screaming after many rocked stages. Lives are impacted and forever changed through an experience rendered as “Milliyonic,” a new movement led by God and spearheaded by a young man who aims to challenge the hearts of people to live passionately for Christ. Just who are we talking about here? His name is Milliyon. And while his name is vastly known from the “Cajo Famly” and “Kingdom Business” tours with gospel artist Canton Jones, and for being featured on a song entitled “Bended Knee” on Deitrick Haddon’s “Church On The Moon” which debuted at #1 on the Gospel Billboard charts,” he also wrote the hit song “Holy Ghost Holiday” on James Fortune’s record “Encore” which debuted at #2 on the Gospel Billboard chart. He’s twice been nominated as hip hop artist of they year by G.C.M.A and shared the stage with mainstream artists such as: Rick Ross, T-Pain, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary and Jazzy Phae, and his mission still, is to shake the world into an undeniable knowledge of who God is. His music is an extensive tool to help spread the word across the world. His approach is unheard of, his lyrics are irrefutably dope and his lifestyle is identically mirrored to the word of God. Now, with Milliyonic Pure Culture his own label imprint, a new stage is being set for his debut album, Live Milliyonic, produced by Milliyon, Randy “Big Ran” Hairston (Oukast, Mase, Cam’ron, V.I.C, Canton Jones) and Brandon “Black Knight” Peavy (BK, Flame, Melinda Watts). -
