My favorites (in no particular order) are Junior Rifle, Junior Pistol, Junior Trap, Work Parties, Combat Match, AR-15 Steel Match, Annual Barbecue, Cracker Shoot, Trap, 5-Stand and a few others. I would participate in more events but I keep having to go to work and keep my beautiful wife happy at home (doing the dishes and taking out the trash).

I was thinking that all of these events have one thing in common – they all require a lot of work to set up, run, and tear down. Each event has a shoot chair that orchestrates the mayhem and makes it all work properly. In every case, without a bunch of volunteers pitching in to help out, the shoot chair would be overworked and grumpy. Because we have a great bunch of participants, we usually have a lot of volunteer help to make it all happen. I have had to run a few events so I know how critical it is to have people offer to help out and make my life easier. I have also talked to numerous shoot chairs about this and we all agree – We all appreciate when people step up and help out to make events run smoothly. If you have helped set up and/or tear down an GUNTHER event and you wondered if anyone noticed, believe me – it is noticed and appreciated greatly. I 2019 Scholarship Winners EF&GA believes that education is an important part of Plumbing becoming a productive member of society. Each year we Inc hold a scholarship award contest for EF&GA members, & Drain, members’ children and members’ grandchildren. In order to qualify, the applicants must fill out the application and write an essay that meets the required criteria. All of the (760) 745-9990 applicants that qualify are have their names placed in a hat and a random drawing of up to four names are selected.

This year the winners are Max King, Drianna Brinkmeier, Wyatt Boublil, and Aaron Ferguson. If you know them, be sure to congratulate them.

I Coaches Course (10/20/2019) One of the many areas where we need more volunteers is in coaching. We need people to coach for the Junior Marksmanship Programs, Women On Target, and other introductory classes and events. If you are interested in participating but question your abilities as a coach, perhaps the Coaches Course would be a good place to start. The class is a full-day event and lunch is included. Skills for coaching include but are not limited to the skills that are used for shooting. When you learn to coach a specific discipline, it forces you to consider and break down the discipline to a combination of minor components – stance, breathing, trigger control, etc… Because you are forced to dissect it, you re-learn the discipline and become better at it yourself. Also, when you watch a new shooter improve with your assistance and watch them get stoked on their own progress, it is gratify- ing and motivating for yourself. Join us for the Coaches Course and learn how great it can be to coach someone. Please email Ren Everett at [email protected] if you would like to attend. Reservations are not required but strongly rec- ommended so that we can plan for enough food.

I Soda Machine Over the past 6 months or so there has been an ongoing saga over the soda machine on the West side of the Trap Ramada. There were problems with getting it refilled and general service issues. After a slew of discussions, negotiations, arguments, threats, and certified letters, the old machine was finally removed. There was a minor casualty from the removal of the old machine. The security cage was damaged but that didn’t stop us. Chris Cote brought up his Escondido Fish & Game Assoc. P.O. Box 460506 welding gear and put it back together again. Escondido, CA 92046 Pub. Monthly, Vol. 22, Issue 10 Dossier continued on pg. 12

3 JUNIOR CORNER by Patrick Russ

Junior Rifle (9/15/2019) On September 15th, we had another great Junior Rifle event. The weather was warm, but not hot with a gentle breeze starting about noon. We had approximately 70 kids. These kids did an amazing job as usual. I would not want to be working the scoring table this month as many of the scores were extremely close.

I would like to thank the Navy Corpsman of the 1st Marine Division for volunteering with our Junior Rifle program. These young men showed up at the crack of dawn, on their day off, to work with us. They coached the kids in the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship. As the guy that runs the line for this program and a Marine, I can tell you that I loved having a firing line full of Navy Corpsman. It was a huge relief because my biggest fear is that something bad happens at one of these events. With a line full of Corpsman, I knew that if anything did happen, they would receive the best possible care. These guys are life savers, we couldn’t have been in better hands. Not to mention, these guys really knew their stuff with many shooters getting their best scores ever. The kids came away healthy, happy and with a great experience.

Just a reminder, Top Gun is coming up soon. Will you be on that list? The November Junior Rifle event will be your last chance to improve your overall scores. Junior Trap is Back

Chris Cote has stepped up to work with Curt Summers and get Junior Trap going again. The format of the event has changed so that it is more tuned for the game of Trap and more in line with Junior Rifle and Junior Pistol.

During the first relay the Beginners are in the Meeting Hall for a classroom session to learn the basics of shotguns as well as the game of Trap.

On the Trap Pad, Intermediate (Relay 1) and Beginner (Relay 2) shooters migrate to each of the five positions and shoot at the targets with a coach following them to each position for safety and instruction.

When a shooter has demonstrated proficiency and proper safety habits, he/she can qualify to move on to the Advanced group to shoot with Curt Summers and his crew. On the Advanced Trap Pad they shoot at targets that are launched form multiple machines in different directions. This is a truly challenging course of fire and the kids have a great time doing it.

In order to keep this event going, we need to main resources – Coaches and ammunition. If you want to help coach, please contact Chris Cote and he will work with you on scheduling. If you don’t know how to coach, we will happily teach you. There is also a great Coaches Course on October 20th (see Page 3). If you want to help in the ammunition department, the new ammunition laws are making this difficult. To make it easier, gift cards from Walmart, Big 5, Turners, or cash donations can give us the resources to purchase more ammunition to keep this great program going. Junior Scores on pg. 5

Thanks to Wednesday or Saturday night in the past few weeks, you all who attended and made the event lots of fun. probably noticed that we have new lights on the Trap I want to publicly thank a few individuals who made Ranges. The new fixtures are LED and consume about half my life a whole lot easier the day of the InterClub. Tim the electricity compared to the old ones. They also appear Hoy helped keep the accounting straight and helped much brighter because the light is focused downrange keep score. Ron Schroder took care of getting the instead of having much of the light cast into the sky (light food to the event. Chris Cote, Mark Eller, Ian Thomas, pollution.) Bill and Reynalou Linamen helped keep score and took care of other miscellaneous details while I I worked with a local vendor and found the replacement was herding cats for the entire day. Without these fixtures for a reasonable price. Then we contracted with individuals, I would have lost my sanity that day. Kats Electric (a licensed and bonded electrical contractor and a member of EF&GA) to install the new fixtures properly and professionally. Now there is a lot less flex conduit exposed and the new fixtures no longer require 15 8/20/2019 Clyde Ewin (25), Don Hudson (25), minutes to warm up when they are turned on. George Plante (25), Rogert Moynihan (25 x 2), The main difference that I noticed is that while shooting Mark Eller (75), Rich Davis (75) (25 at 27 Yards) 5-Stand, the high birds no longer disappear into the 8/21/2019 Rich Davis (26 x 2 (Doubles), 75), Darrin Eaton (50), darkness before reappearing when it’s almost too late to Bill Linamen (50), Don Hudson (25) shoot them. This gives me one less excuse for having a 8/24/2019 Mark Eller (75), Tim Hoy (25), Bill Linamen (25) lousy score at 5-Stand. 8/27/2019 James Gordon (25), Buth Whitmore (25), Don Hudson (25), Danny Dodinho (25), The bottom line is that we have better light that uses less Tim Petrachek (25), Bill Linamen (25 x 2), electricity. SDG&E is doubling the price of electricity Mark Eller (25, 50), Rich Davis (50, 25) from 4-9PM so we have minimized the impact of the rate 8/28/2019 Rich Davis (26 (Doubles), 50), Kevin Kohler increase with the bonus of better lighting. (First 25 - Shot his hat), Don Hudson (25) 8/31/2019 Mark Eller (25), Clyde Ewin (25), Ron Schroder (25), InterClub Results (8/24/2019) Luke Wang (50), Rich Davis (50) We had a great InterClub event last month as it was our 9/3/2019 Don Hudson (50, 25), Roger Moynihan (50, 25), turn to host the event at our Range. The winning Club Score was EF&GA with a Club Score of 95.20%. The Clyde Ewin (25 x 2), Danny Godinho (25), fact that we had 20 shooters participating improved our Rich Davis (50) score as well. The high individual shooter was Rich Davis. 9/4/2019 Lance Leinimyer (50), Rich Davis (50), Mark Eller (25) Although he is an EF&GA member, he was shooting for 9/7/2019 Rich Davis (25), Mark Eller (25) Redlands as he was instrumental in bringing them into 9/10/2019 Danny Godinho (25), Rich Davis (25), the InterClub community. The high woman’s score was Tim Petrachek (25), Don Hudson (25), Reynalou Linamen from EF&GA – atta girl!. The top Junior Mike Talmadge (25), Mark Eller (50), James Gordon (50) 9/11/2019 Rich Davis (52 (Doubles), 25 x 2), Don Huson (25 x 2), Luke Wang (25), Mark Eller (25) 9/17/2019 Mark Eller (25), Kurt Sachau (25), Fred Corley (25), John Taliaferro (25), Roger Moynihan (25), Rich Davis (25) 9/18/2019 Rich Davis (52 (Doubles), 25), Luke Wang (25 x 2), Don Hudson (25), Lance Leinimyer (25)

Neil Pisk is our range CRSO responsible for the First Aid Kits and has a message to the membership regarding the kits.

“As you already know, there is a first aid kit at each of the ranges: Pistol, 100 Rifle, 150 Rifle and Trap (on the outside wall of the Trap Ramada). There are also first aid items in the drawer in the kitchen (It has the RED + on it). Each first aid kit has a laminated card inside with a photo of the way the kit items should be laid out, plus a listing, on the backside, of each item and where it belongs in the kit. These first aid kits are there for the protection and safety of our members and their guests. If you are injured or ill, please feel free to use any of the items for your relief and comfort. However, these items were not purchased for you to take to fill your personal first aid kits at home or in your vehicle. Each time an item is removed from a kit for personal reasons, it takes away from a member or guest who really might need it at the range. I (Neil) am the designated Emergency Disaster Preparedness CRSO. Part of my job is to re-supply the first aid kits as needed. Please feel free to notify me if you discover any items missing from the first aid kits. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter” I would like to let you know that there has been a rash of thefts of items in the First Aid Kits, especially the blood clot powder which may be need by YOU. If/when we catch you I can guarantee your membership will be suspended or revoked! When you come to the Range you usually have a check list of what to bring: firearm(s), ammo, eyes, ears, etc. and sometimes you forget some of those items. While not life altering, it can be a real annoyance and may curtail your range activities depending on the item forgotten.

When leaving the Range, you need to use the same check list. Most importantly, the number ONE item to check is; “do I have my firearm(s)”. This will be a life altering event for you if someone else takes possession of that firearm and uses it! It is YOUR responsibility to not leave your firearm unattended and in your possession at all times. Before leaving, confirm that you have the same number of firearm(s) that you left home with. If you are going to leave your firearm on the range, at least make it a Cowboy gun so I can have some fun with it...

At our annual RMAD (Range Master Appreciation Day) I had the honor of presenting the RangeMaster of the Year award and this year’s winner is “Dave Olmstead”. Please thank him for his service when you see him on the range.

13 BLACK POWDER NEWS By Garth Warner Last Contest: Our July contest was a Mid-Range with targets from 75 to 125 yards. Despite the scorching heat, we had nine pistol shooters and thirteen rifle shooters come out to slowly marinate in the heat. We had a BullsEye League Trade Gun contest on the first Sunday in Au- gust. This also had a good turnout, as the temperature was a little more moderate. BTW, what do you call a Muzzle Loading shooter that has to call his wife at home, to bring his balls out to the range? Ask Tom Arendell next time you see him at the range. Next Contest: Our September contest will be Super Short Range, with targets at 25 to 75 yards. This format is for those of you that have been thinking about getting into muzzle loading silhouette shooting. This is, by far, the easiest contest of the year. We will work with you to make sure that you understand the format, and have a good time. Categories for this contest are Single Shot Pistol, Cap and Ball revolver, (Percussion or Flintlock) Rifle, and/or Trade Gun. Remember, this is for replica muzzle loading pistols, cap and ball , replica period rifles, (percussion or flintlock), firing patched round ball, (only), using black powder or BP substitute. We also shoot a black powder cartridge class for those of you that swing that way. Cowboy Action guys are invited to see if they can actually hit a target at 25 yards and beyond, (with black powder, or BP substitute). If anyone is interested in participating in any of the above for the first time, please feel free to e-mail or phone me with questions or con- cerns. Contact info is on our website.

On September 1st, the BullsEye league will be running a ML 3 Gun Aggregate. Contact Patrick Watson for more details. Contact info is on our website. Other Stuff Upcoming: In October, the Bullseye League is running a Muzzle Loading Congress Trophy Event, for Rifle, Pistol, and Trade Gun. This is an ALL DAY multi discipline event, that is as much an accuracy contest, as it is an endurance test. There are individual events for percussion rifle, flintlock rifle, single shot pistol, and trade gun. You are encouraged to enter those individual events that you have equipment for. You are not required to enter them all. There is a hard cut off date for registration on Sept 29th. Entries after this date will NOT be accept- ed. Contact Tom Arendell at [email protected] for entries and more information.
