Every month I scramble to get there early and help set up the targets. On March 3rd, I got up, jumped in my truck and made the trek from Oceanside as usual. On the way to the Range I noticed a little bit of mist on my windshield and even turned my wipers on a couple of times but I figured that most of us are not made of sugar so we should be okay to continue with the event. When I got there Brian Lamb agreed that we would be okay even if it did rain a little. So, we continued setting up and the match went on as usual. We had 57 shooters and by the time we were done it rained quite a bit but we all had a great time. I thought that it was great training to shoot pistol in rainy conditions. Moreover, like in football, it rains on both sides of the field. We were all dealing with the rain so it was not an advantage for anyone. This whole thing got me thinking about other events as well. Some events cannot work in rainy conditions. For example, if rain gets in the Trap machines, it could damage the equipment. At the very least, soggy clays would all come out of the machine broken. Before you drive all the way to the Range for an event, you might want to check the web site to see if your event has been cancelled. Whether an event is cancelled for weather or because a shoot chair is out sick, we can post that cancellation on the web site. If you are a GUNTHER shoot chair and you need to cancel an event, contact New * Used * Consignments me or the EF&GA Secretary (Geoff Orchin) and we can Tues. thru Sun. 10am - 6pm change an event to display as CANCELLED on the web www.GuntherGuns.com site. I would like to repeat a section of the article I sent out last month, since a few of our members did not have any opportunity to read it.

The phrase “Cold” means the range is INACTIVE; there are no people shooting. You may NOT handle any firearm(s), ammunition, magazines, etc. You may NOT move equipment from/to your car or off the shooting line. It is your responsibility to verify the status of the range!

We take safety very seriously at this range and we want the members to understand that a major violation will get you an invitation to the Board Meeting to discuss the incident.

I keep finding people who leave their magazine in their rifle when not shooting. Regardless of whether the bolt is back (please use a chamber flag) and/or the magazine is empty, when not shooting please remove it. Ammunition in the magazine is fine so long as it is not in the firearm.

If I keep seeing this, I may start confiscating them and have you visit a Board Meeting to get it back…

We discuss and stress the importance of firearm safety all the time, but neglect to talk about the component that makes it go bang: the ammunition.

Factory ammunition is pretty reliable and I usually never worry about it, but I have had a few duds. Factory reloads are also usually good quality ammunition at a reduced price. They have the proper equipment and quality assurance.

As a reloader, I take great care to make sure my loads are correct, but will admit I have had one squib and one double-charge in my years of reloading. The double-charge was a YeeHaa moment in 45 ACP shooting one handed—I had to check to see if all my fingers were still there… Thank goodness for shooting glasses and an all steel 1911 frame!

Well it appears one of our members was using reloads that they acquired from someone else and their Glock went boom. Fortunately, the shooter (and the other people around him) was not seriously hurt—just a bruised hand. The Glock frame, however, did not fare so well.

So know your ammunition source and determine how much you trust it. Your firearm, body parts and the shooters around you will appreciate it.

I am still looking for some “Volunteer” Rangemasters who would like to assist in managing and keeping the range safe (it is the Wild West sometimes). I provide training, a nifty red hat/shirt and an opportunity to help people shoot safely.

Last Contest: Feb 25th was our standard short range event. 9 rifle and 6 pistol shooters participated. There were no single shot pistols this time. You can blame Ray Bucholz for pulling everyone to the dark side with cap and ball . Ray was presented with a baby buffalo at the last club meeting in appreciation of his continuing efforts to provide Black Diamond awards to muzzle loading BP shooters. He will have to clean up after it until he can get it housebroken..... Next Contest: April 22nd. 2017 Top Gun contest winners shootout starting at 07:00am. This will be immediately followed by our standard pistol contest at 08:30 AM, and standard Long Range rifle contest starting at 10:00 AM. (Standard Pistol and Rifle times are approximate depending on how long the Top Gun shoot takes. (For specific questions about the Top Gun contest contact Ren Everett. He runs this one. YES!, he can use some help setting up the field between 06:00 and 07:00 on the day of the event.) NOTE: The following is a list of shooters that are eligible to participate in the Top Gun contest. I have NOT been able to contact all of you. We would really like to see you there.
