Heart Disease Risk Factors

 Age o as you get older, your risk of heart disease increases o although strokes can occur at any age, most strokes occur in people over 65  Gender o men over 55, and postmenopausal women, are at greater risk of heart disease o until women reach menopause, they have a lower risk of stroke than men  Ethnicity o risk factors such as diabetes and high blood pressure are higher among certain ethnic populations  Family history o your risk of heart disease is increased if close family members developed heart disease before age 55 or, in the case of female relatives, before menopause o your risk of stroke is increased if close family members had a stroke before age 65  History of stroke or TIA o if you’ve had a previous stroke or TIA (transient ischemic attack or a “mini-stroke”), your risk of stroke increases
