Matthew Sammartino PRINCIPAL

Matt, or “Mr. Sam” as he is called by students, began his teaching career at Ursuline in 2000 as a member of the Social Studies Department. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Duquesne University and a Master’s Degree of Educational Administration from Youngstown State University. He has also completed graduate work in Religious Education through Walsh University.

As the Assistant Principal, Mr. Sammartino transformed the school’s marketing program. In 2009, he was appointed Dean of Students. He served as the Assistant Principal for Student Affairs prior to being appointed Principal in July of 2015. Mr. Sam also teaches Advanced Placement Government, and serves as the Social Studies Department Chairperson.

Michelle Carosella Assistant Principal for Academics

Michelle Carosella is a graduate of Magnificat High School in Rocky River, Ohio. She earned her Bachelor of Education Degree from The University of Toledo and Master’s of Education from John Carroll University. She worked in the Solon City Schools as an interventionist where she designed instruction for students with disabilities, as a teacher for students with limited English proficiency, as a third grade teacher, as well as a media specialist. She teaches Advanced Placement Seminar and Advanced Placement Research. Michelle also serves as the administrative liaison to the Ursuline High School Home and School Association. Prior to being named Assistant Principal in 2017, she was the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Diocese of Youngstown.

Margaret Matune Damore ‘06 Assistant Principal for Student Affairs

Maggie has been a member of the Ursuline staff since 2010. She earned both her Bachelor’s Degree in History and Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Administration from John Carroll University. She also earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Youngstown State University. Maggie is a member of the Social Studies Department where she teaches Advanced Placement Psychology. She also co-advises the Students of Stewardship (SOS) Club, Student Ambassadors, and helps to organize the biennial mission trip. Prior to being named Assistant Principal, she served Ursuline as the Director of Media and Information Technologies.

Ursuline began her 115th school year on August 21 when the Freshmen Class of 2023 (126 members strong) began their high school journey.

A blessing, demonstration and reception was held for the donors of the newly purchased Anatomage Table – a virtual 3D dissection table used by Ursuline students enrolled in science courses. The table was featured in the Business Journal, WKBN and WFMJ.

Seniors Brady Leugers, Caroline Scharf, Keona Wilkie and Sean Phillips were named 2020 National Merit Commended Scholars.

The thirty-first Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards were presented at the Feast of Saint Ursula Liturgy. The recipients were Dr. Vincent ’62 and Zip Largey Basile ’64, and Atty. Robert Nelson ’64.

1010 11 2019-2020 Year In Review

A much anticipated ribbon cutting was held at YSU’s new Cafaro Field located on Elm Street – the north side of YSU’s campus. The field will be used by various high schools in the area, and the community as a whole. The Cafaro Family donated $1.5 million of the $2.5 million used to build the field.

The Quiz Bowl Team won the Second Division Championship for the third year in a row after defeating Cardinal Mooney High School.

Following the orders of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to all schools, Ursuline closed on March 16th and students learned remotely for the remainder of the school year.

Bishop George V. Murry, S.J. passed away at Sloan Kettering Hospital after serving as Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown for 13 years. Ursuline students served as his pallbearers.

The first floor hallway (new building) was renovated to include new LED lighting, new flooring and air conditioning. Asbestos was also removed. Doors were installed on the south side of the building.

The Speech and Debate Team qualified members for two national tournaments – the Catholic Forensic League Tournament in Chicago and the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Albuquerque. Catholic Nationals were cancelled due to COVID-19. The National Tournament was held virtually. Catholic National qualifiers included Dominic Adams ’21 and Lauren Ladd (Duo) ‘21; Marina Sepulveda ’22 (Drama); Megan Brockway ’21 (Informative Speaking). National qualifiers included Quinn Barton ’20 (Original Oratory); Molly Burke ’20 (Informative Speaking); Riley Burke ’22 (Program Oral Interpretation) and Dominic Adams and Lauren Ladd (Duo).

Ursuline welcomed the Class of 2020 as the newest alumni at the 112th Annual Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 24th. Long-time Assistant Principal, Sr. Regina Rogers, OSU, was the commencement speaker. Caroline Scharf was honored as the Valedictorian with a grade point average of 4.64 on a 4.0 scale. Brady Leugers was the Salutatorian with a gpa of 4.61/4.0. Both are National Merit Commended Scholars. Following the guidelines issued by the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio Department of Education, Ursuline had virtual ceremonies which were taped and aired on Facebook, YouTube and Ursuline.com.

Sophia Alleman ’23 won 1st place in the State of Ohio History Day Competition for her documentary, FDR and REA: Bringing Light and Power to Rural America. She advanced to the National History Day contest where she finished in 2nd place.

1212 13 Athletic Department

John DeSantis ’05 was hired as the Athletic Director.

The Shillelagh came back home. It is the same shillelagh that Mrs. Bridget Durkin brought back from County Mayo in 1958 for the first Ursuline vs. Mooney football game. In 2019, Ursuline defeated Cardinal Mooney 20-13. Michael Kernan was hired as the Head Girls Basketball Coach. He has led the Lady Irish Softball program since 2002.

Coach Kent Blacksher and the 2019 Boys’ Tennis Team were awarded “The Claire Muscaro Team Sportsmanship Award” The Boys’ Cross Country Team qualified for which is voted on by the officials during the Regionals for the first time in 12 years. 2019 State Team Tournament.

All spring sports were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

1616 17 Annual Appeal

he Office of Alumni and Advancement Tcoordinates the Annual Appeal which provides unrestricted support to the General Fund. The Annual Appeal has exceeded its budgeted goal in each of the last 11 years. For the July 1, 2019 – June 30, 2020 fiscal year, the Appeal was 5.9% over budgeted goal. $127,099.22 was the total amount given through the end of the fiscal year. An Ursuline Day of Giving was scheduled for April 2, 2020. Class agents from each graduating class were asked to reach out and challenge their Ursuline Facebook friends for a gift to the Appeal. A phone-a- thon was planned as well utilizing Student Ambassadors. Due to the State of Ohio shelter-in-place order at the time, the Day of Giving was considerably scaled back. he 17th Annual Auction Gala, Celebrate Our Legacy, was Theld on Friday, November 7th in the gymnasium. The auction is the largest all-school fundraiser. More than 400 guests attended to bid on silent, live and ticket auctions. Live acoustical music by the Family Tree was played during the cocktail hour. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and a buffet dinner by Chrystal’s Catering. Mobile bidding returned for the third consecutive year. A special “Spotlight Raffle” was held. Tickets were 1/$20 or 6/$100. Purchasers had the chance to win a Louis Vuitton handbag, a Nemacolin Woodland Resort gift certificate, a Youngstown Country Club day of golf gift certificate, a David Yurman bracelet and a Bourbon basket. Proceeds from the Fund-A-Need campaign were equally split between the Ursuline Sisters Scholarship and the Adopt- A-Student Scholarship. These donors may be found on the Endowed Scholarship pages in this report. Net proceeds from the Auction totaled $115,000 which was applied to the general operating budget. A new auction event was held in October. Girls Gone Shopping – a sip, shop and socialize pop-up event - benefitted the 17th Auction. Vendors included Coral Rose Boutique, Rosebuds Children’s Boutique, Captain McFinn, Dineens, Gray Barn Baking, Health Food Center of Youngstown, Ivory & Birch, Magnolia’s on the Green, Santa’s Workshop, Spruce Home Décor and Studio Oxygen. Vendors were asked to donate a gift valued at $100 to the auction. Admission was a $20 gift card of a guest’s choosing. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages were served while guests shopped.

ine new scholarships were established during the N2019-2020 school year: The Class of 1959 Scholarship, Thomas J. Dalzell and Alleene J. Dalzell Scholarship, Sean Durkin Scholarship, Atty. Al and Suzanne Fleming Scholarship, Russell Nalepa/George Stroia Scholarship, Joan O’Horo O’Neil Scholarship, Frank Prologo Scholarship, Janet Sanders- Ganchar Top Scholar Scholarship and the Sturgeon Family Scholarship. The Ursuline Endowment Fund was established in 1987 for the purpose of providing tuition assistance to students. The fund is managed by the Endowment Board of Trustees. In 2016, the Board applied for and was granted public charity status. Now a 509 (a) (2) public charity, Thomas J. Dalzell and Alleene J. Dalzell Ursuline Endowment Fund, Inc. was created for the sole support of Ursuline High School. The Board considers a fully funded scholarship to have achieved a $10,000 benchmark. Endowed scholarships are held in perpetuity. Grants are awarded based on interest earned. In order to receive an endowed scholarship, Ursuline families must complete a Financial Aid Application.
