Dad’s maternal grandparents were Dan Martin of Northern Ireland and Julia Crowley, identified as of the Province of Munster, Ireland. My mother’s great grandparents, both the Willis and Doak families, also immigrated to Canada from Northern Ireland. So, it is little wonder that I went in search of my Irish ancestors. As my great-grandfather Captain James W. Brereton kept a diary and there were family tales and newspaper clippings of Brereton and Handford Halls, I became intrigued with my Irish Brereton ancestors at an early age. I began my journey with the Breretons of Cheshire and I continue to be fascinated with this family who travelled the world, were knighted and held positions of power. Also, as with many Landed Gentry families, their sons went into the clergy (some rising to senior positions), became involved in local politics and certainly there were many in the military throughout the centuries.

    THE LAMP Public Houses in the Parish of Lorrha & Dorrha By Seamus King There were fifteen public houses in the Parish of Lorrha and Dorrha in the early nineteen-eighties. I became aware of them when I was writing the history of the Lorrha G.A.A. Club. As the number of inhabitants in the parish at the time was approximately 1,300, it meant that there was a pub for every 87 men, women and children! It is unknown how many of the proprietors of these premises made a living out of selling alcoholic drink but my hunch is that virtually all of them depended on ancillary enterprises. The fifteen pubs were as follows: The Angler’s Rest, two Kelly’s pubs of Rathcabbin, Mary Anne Brophy’s, Lack Meara’s, Fitzpatricks of Abbeville, Sammons, O’Meara’s and the Hilltop Pub, Carrickahorig, Carrolls and Hoctor’s, The Ferry, Portland House, Moylans and Weddocks, Lorrha, Milne’s of Ballymacegan. (I am including the Hilltop Bar because, although it is strictly outside the parish, it is part of the village of Carrigahorig.} In 2018 there are four pubs left, two in Lorrha, The Friar’s Tavern and Pat Houghs, The Ferry Inn, and Kellys of Rathcabbin. Before they disappear altogether I thought it a good idea to record what we know of all these establishments while people have memories of them. I have tried to get as much information as possible and it varies from pub to pub but at least they will be remembered as places that people enjoyed visiting and provided a service for people, mostly men, to have a drink and converse with their neighbours in a relaxed atmosphere.

A number of facilitated workshops were held at Moatfield GAA club house, facilitated by NTLP staff Trisha Purcell and Gearóid Fitzgibbon. The input received at these workshops, along with publically available information from Pobal Maps and the CSO were incorporated into the final draft which was presented to the community for comment. 1. Section One 1.1 Introduction and Methodology The economic and social forecast for Ireland is positive and it is predicted nationally that we are on the road to recovery. Nationally unemployment rates have dropped, job opportunities are improving and quality of life is returning to what is once was. These improvements are slower to reach some areas and in particular rural locations. Whilst Lorrha Rathcabbin has a wealth of highly significant historical and natural heritage there is a sense that this is not being capitalised on to benefit the local community.

LANDSCAPE AND VIUAL 12.1 Introduction This chapter of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) addresses the potential landscape and visual impacts of the proposed Derrinlough Wind Farm. The emphasis in this chapter is on the likely significant direct and indirect effects of the proposed development. It covers the assessment methodology, a description of the proposed development and the existing landscape based on relevant guidance. It includes a description of the landscape policy with specific reference to wind energy and the study area in which the proposed development site is located. The landscape of the area is described in terms of its existing character, which includes a description of landscape values and the landscape’s sensitivity to change. The landscape and visual impact assessment of the proposed wind farm uses visibility mapping, representative viewpoints and photomontages. The potential impacts in both landscape and visual terms are then assessed, including cumulative impacts. A full description of the proposed development is provided in Chapter 4 of this EIAR. 12.2 Statement of Authority This chapter was prepared by Joanna Mole, a Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment Specialist and Chartered Landscape Architect with McCarthy Keville O’Sullivan Ltd. with over 15 years of experience in both private practice and local authorities. Joanna holds a BSc (Hons) in Landscape Design and Plant Science from Sheffield University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture from Leeds Beckett University and a MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology from Loughborough University. Joanna is a Chartered Landscape Architect with specialist knowledge in Landscape and Visual Impact assessments for projects ranging from individual houses to large windfarms, solar farms, cycle route design and landscape contract management.
