A Look Back at the Creation of A Musical Christmas Carol

In 1986, Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C. commissioned artistic director David H. Bell to create a musical version of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. This had been done before, but Mr. Bell wanted to do something different and unique – he wanted to keep it authentic. What he came up with, in his own words, is “more a play with music than a musical,” using authentic Victorian and pre-Victorian Christmas melodies – something most reviews of the play especially note. “This is not Rodgers and Hammerstein,” he laughs. “It’s faithful to Dickens. It’s an attempt to bring alive the Dickensian story in the very vocabulary of Dickens.” David H. Bell says that what gets people wrapped up in the musical – what keeps them coming back – is Charles Dickens’ sense of drama. “It has to do with the interaction of the audience and the actors with the original Dickens story, which is so powerful,” he says. But it also has to do with the interaction between audience and cast – the production typically uses a small group of actors and actresses, many of them playing several parts. This adds to the intimacy and energy of the production. “What I love about Dickens – any Dickens – is that he creates such vivid minor characters; the supporting roles really take on a life and an interest of their own,” Mr. Bell explains. “It really requires a very talented troupe of actors to make the most of those wonderful minor roles.” The production demands more of its audience, too. “We keep the spirit of the original Dickens,” Mr. Bell says. “We don’t pander to children.” Even so, he says that children make up a good part of the audience at the productions. “It’s amazing to me that even though it’s not Mr. Magoo’s Christmas, these kids get it,” he says. “And not only that, they are enwrapped by the story.” The tale remains poignant for David Bell for many reasons. But what affects him so strongly is the social message Dickens sent through the story. “The social conditions out of which the original story was born have changed so little,” he says. “It makes you reflect on your own life. You realize that you have food, a home, a Christmas fire, money to get you through the holidays. And it makes you more aware of those others who are not so fortunate as you.” – From the December 1992 program for Pittsburgh CLO’s A Musical Christmas Carol
