Even though the day was bitterly cold, everybody enjoyed their trip and the bowl of soup and sandwich in Rory O’Con- nell’s bar afterwards went down a treat. After refreshments in Rory’s in Gort we drove back up to Oranmore Gort for the Parade there. We congregated on the Coast Road and by the time the Parade got going the wind from the East was blowing pretty strong and it really was cold. Some 36 cars were out in style with the Grand Marshal been driven by Ray O’Donoghue in his 1935 Riley Monaco and Saint Patrick travelling in style in Paddy Fahy’s Mercedes 450 SL. Despite the cold weather, Paddy’s roof was open to allow Saint Oranmore Patrick’s Crozier to protrude above roof level. The local committee thought it was another mobile phone mast and were about to lodge an ob- jection when Saint Patrick produced his credentials. Our members were nice and cosy in their cars but every- one pitied the scantily clad children. This Parade was, without doubt, the most successful and enjoyable one yet. A large crowd enjoyed a good turnout of vintage cars, tractors and trucks at the Portumna Parade. Portumna See pages 12, 13, 14 and 15 for a full list of members. Marcos Sports in excellent condition Telephone Fergal at 087 7687171 4 The John Folan Page Greetings Folks, Well Spring is here, with the clocks gone forward and the days longer, for those of you who have yet to show your cars the light of day after the Winter, well we have the meals after wheels run coming up real soon, under the guidance of John Conole, so I expect lots and lots of cars out there……. On another subject, I am sure lots of you now have computers, so have many of you searched e-Bay recently?, in the classic car section?. It is amazing what you might find there, and there is also a very, very large parts listing too. Searching for that elusive part?? - just do a search in the automotive section and type in a keyword - 95% of the time some- thing will show up. A little further into the future we have WestRun 2006 …….. New head- quarters and new sponsor. I know it’s a lot of changes in one year, but that is just how it happened. As far as the venue goes, this year we are in the Clarinbridge Court Ho- tel and, after a meeting with the management, it looks like all will go well there. There is ample secure parking at the rear and as our run this year is going south to Clare, it is actually not a bad starting point. Now for our new sponsor …… for the last few years we were sponsored by Top Part Motor Factors and our contact there was Paul Harty. Paul, with some others, now have their own business called “Carparts Ware- house” and have graciously offered to sponsor our WestRun. Let’s hope that he can see his sponsorship repaid by our custom. Our choice of venue this year is Lahinch - a lovely seaside town with a fabulous seaworld aquarium, fine restaurants andsome wonderful nearby attractions. The run down is through the heart of the Burren and our expected route home is along the north Clare coast. Both offer some wonderful scenery and I would advise everyone to make this a relaxing trip …. take your time and enjoy. When in Lahinch we will have a walk- around quiz like we had last year in Oughterard, just hope the weather is better!!! Well, enough of my ramblings, we will no doubt see a lot of you on the “meals after wheels” run on April 16th. ll soon, See you a John 5 Improve Your Driving A series of articles aimed at improving driving skills has been put together by the Chairman of the W.V.V.M.C., Bill Fennell. 6 Western Veteran and Vintage Motor Club Ltd. CHARITY PROJECT By James McDonagh TR6 Project update At the end of March the situation is as follows: • On the 1st week in Jan ‘06 the project team from WVVMC & John Nevin & his staff at FAS location had the car completely stripped down. • The chassis & body was then sand blasted, • The chassis was then primed & painted, And is awaiting all of it’s components to be reassembled, as they are prepared. • The body will take some time as there is a lot of work to be done, as of to date. • The engine was completely stripped down, by my self & David Fennell, at Bill Fennell’s location, the Head was worked on by Mr Paddy Cleary, engineering works in Loughrea, and at the moment the engine is being reassembled. • This car, when completed, will be raffled during WestRun 2006. • More info. & update in our next magazine. • 2011 Annual Report from the President and Chair
2011 ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIR 2012 marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Buzzards Bay Coalition by a dedicated group of citizens spanning the Bay from Woods Hole to Westport. They were brought together by the loss of shellfish beds to contamination from sewage, by the ongoing threat of oil spills from barges, by toxic pollution in need of cleanup in New Bedford and at Otis, and by the spread of sprawl development and loss of open space throughout the watershed. In 1987, these problems were reaching an all-time peak and the Bay’s citizens came together to create a new future for our region’s environment. They believed that local citizens from all watershed towns should work together; for they had the most to gain from the Bay’s preservation and the most to lose by its degra- dation. They created the Buzzards Bay Coalition to carry forth that mission. So a sign was hung on a donated cadets room at Mass Maritime, a phone line estab- lished, and from the keys of a typewriter, the Bay Coalition began its work to build a citizens movement to clean up the Bay. The accomplishments in this 2011 Annual Report speak volumes about how far we’ve come as an organization and how the challenges facing our Bay have changed in the past quarter century. But one thing that remains as true today as it was in 1987 is that people are the engine of the Buzzards Bay Coalition. Our members and generous sup- porters who volunteer their time, money, and ideas are at the heart of our efforts and make our work possible.
