Risktaking Behavior in Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy
FULL-LENGTH ORIGINAL RESEARCH Risk-taking behavior in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy *†Britta Wandschneider, *†Maria Centeno, *†‡Christian Vollmar, *†Jason Stretton, §Jonathan O’Muircheartaigh, *†Pamela J. Thompson, ¶Veena Kumari, *†Mark Symms, §Gareth J. Barker, *†John S. Duncan, #Mark P. Richardson, and *†Matthias J. Koepp Epilepsia, 0(0):1–8, 2013 doi: 10.1111/epi.12413 SUMMARY Objective: Patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) often present with risk-tak- ing behavior, suggestive of frontal lobe dysfunction. Recent studies confirm functional and microstructural changes within the frontal lobes in JME. This study aimed at char- acterizing decision-making behavior in JME and its neuronal correlates using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods: We investigated impulsivity in 21 JME patients and 11 controls using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), which measures decision making under ambiguity. Perfor- mance on the IGT was correlated with activation patterns during an fMRI working memory task. Results: Both patients and controls learned throughout the task. Post hoc analysis revealed a greater proportion of patients with seizures than seizure-free patients hav- ing difficulties in advantageous decision making, but no difference in performance between seizure-free patients and controls. Functional imaging of working memory networks showed that overall poor IGT performance was associated with an increased Dr. Wandschneider is activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in JME patients. Impaired registrar in neurology learning during the task and ongoing seizures were associated with bilateral medial and is pursuing a PhD prefrontal cortex (PFC) and presupplementary motor area, right superior frontal at the UCL Institute of gyrus, and left DLPFC activation. 1 Analysis of Emotional Tones in Top Hit Song Lyrics in Relation To
Analysis of Emotional Tones in Top Hit Song Lyrics in Relation to Economic Cycles from 1990-2010 Honors Undergraduate Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Business Administration Degree with Honors Research Distinction in the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University By Sharon Yeh Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration with an Operations & Logistics Specialization The Ohio State University 2019 Thesis Committee: Dr. Roger Bailey Dr. Hyunwoo Park Dr. Elliot Bendoly 1 Copyright by Sharon Yeh 2018 2 Abstract While music preferences in society have always changed throughout the decades, we recognize that various external factors and trends—including the economic environment-- affect the type of music we listen to. To this end, we seek to explore the relationship between economic measures and musical preferences in order to better understand how our external environment can affect the emotions that we choose to express and consume. This research analyzes the ways in how economic conditions (expansionary or contractionary periods) can be related to the tone of music that we listen to (such as joy, anger, and sadness). In this analysis, I found that in times of economic contractions, song lyrics were more likely to exhibit analytical and confidence tones, while in economic expansions’ lyrics tend to show more tones of sadness and anger. In understanding how something as external as economic cycles can influence something as internal as musical preferences, we can continue to seek out how our microenvironment affects our microenvironment. While this research can have practical application (such as providing insight to the music industry for forecasting musical preferences), I believe, more importantly, that this research can help society uncover and contemplate how their external environment influences and shapes their preferences, beliefs, and identity across generations. -

Jeff Smith Head of Music, BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music Media Masters – August 16, 2018 Listen to the podcast online, visit www.mediamasters.fm Welcome to Media Masters, a series of one to one interviews with people at the top of the media game. Today, I’m here in the studios of BBC 6 Music and joined by Jeff Smith, the man who has chosen the tracks that we’ve been listening to on the radio for years. Now head of music for BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 6 Music, Jeff spent most of his career in music. Previously he was head of music for Radio 1 in the late 90s, and has since worked at Capital FM and Napster. In his current role, he is tasked with shaping music policy for two of the BBC’s most popular radio stations, as the technology of how we listen to music is transforming. Jeff, thank you for joining me. Pleasure. Jeff, Radio 2 has a phenomenal 15 million listeners. How do you ensure that the music selection appeals to such a vast audience? It’s a challenge, obviously, to keep that appeal across the board with those listeners, but it appears to be working. As you say, we’re attracting 15.4 million listeners every week, and I think it’s because I try to keep a balance of the best of the best new music, with classic tracks from a whole range of eras, way back to the 60s and 70s. So I think it’s that challenge of just making that mix work and making it work in terms of daytime, and not only just keeping a kind of core audience happy, but appealing to a new audience who would find that exciting and fun to listen to. -

Text of Resolutions passed by the General Council of the Theosophical Society Freedom of Thought As the Theosophical Society has spread far and wide over the world, and as members of all religions have become members of it without surrendering the special dogmas, teachings and beliefs of their re- spective faiths, it is thought desirable to emphasize the fact that there is no doctrine, no opinion, by whomsoever taught or held, that is in any way binding on any member of the Society, none which any member is not free to accept or reject. Approval of its three Objects is the sole condition of membership. No teacher, or writer, from H. P. Blavatsky onwards, has any authority to impose his or her teachings or opinions on members. Every member has an equal right to follow any school of thought, but has no right to force the choice on any other. Neither a candidate for any office nor any voter can be rendered ineligible to stand or to vote, because of any opinion held, or because of membership in any school of thought. Opinions or beliefs neither bestow privileges nor inflict penalties. The Members of the General Council earnestly request every member of the Theosophical Society to maintain, defend and act upon these fundamental principles of the Society, and also fearlessly to exercise the right of liberty of thought and of expression thereof, within the limits of courtesy and consideration for others. Freedom of the Society The Theosophical Society, while cooperating with all other bodies whose aims and activities make such cooperation possible, is and must remain an organization entirely independent of them, not committed to any objects save its own, and intent on developing its own work on the broadest and most inclusive lines, so as to move towards its own goal as indicated in and by the pursuit of those objects and that Divine Wisdom which in the abstract is implicit in the title ‘The Theosophical Society’.
