AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Annie M. Chozinski for the degree of Master of Science in Horticulture presented on November 23. 1994. Title: The Evaluation of Cold Hardiness in Corvlus. Abstract approved: Shawn A. Mehlenbacher Anthesis of both staminate and pistillate flowers of Cory/us occurs in midwinter. To insure adequate pollination and nut set, these flowers must attain a sufficient hardiness level to withstand low temperatures. This study estimated cold hardiness of Cory/us cultivars and species using laboratory freezing of shoots without artificial hardening. In December, January and February of 1991-92 and 1992-93, one-year stems were collected 0 0 and frozen at regular intervals from -10 C to -38 C/ and visual browning assessed survival approximately 10 days after freezing. Elongated catkins were clipped prior to freezing. Percent flower bud survival was calculated and plotted against temperature. Linear regression generated an equation relating percent bud survival to temperature. From this equation, estimates of the LT^ (lethal temperature for 50% of the buds) was calculated for catkins, female inflorescences, and vegetative buds. C. avellana L. catkins, on average, were less hardy in both December and January than female inflorescences and vegetative buds. Maximum hardiness was reached in December and nearly all had elongated prior to the February freeze. Cultivars with the most hardy catkins were 'Morell', 'Brixnut', 'Creswell', 'Gem', 'Giresun OSU 54.080', 'Hall's Giant', 'Riccia di Talanico', 'Montebello' and 'Rode Zeller'. Maximum hardiness was observed for both vegetative and pistillate buds in January and was followed by a marked loss of hardiness in February. -

Carpinus orientalis Carpinus orientalis in Europe: distribution, habitat, usage and threats R. Sikkema, G. Caudullo Carpinus orientalis Mill., commonly known as oriental hornbeam, is a small tree or shrub commonly found on dry and rocky slopes of low elevation mountains in South-East Europe. Its wide distribution range reaches through the Black Sea to the Caucasus region. It is a frugal and drought-resistant species, which prefers calcareous soils and is frequently found in disturbed sites. Thanks to its strong suckering capacity and hard wood, it is often managed in coppiced stands for the production of quality firewood and charcoal. No significant pests or diseases are recorded for this tree. The oriental hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis Mill.), is a large shrub or small tree, 1-5 metres tall, rarely up to 15 m, with a grey irregularly ribbed stem. The leaves are -elliptic with evident Frequency ovate < 25% veins, tomentose, with serrate margins and short petioles 5-8 mm 25% - 50% 50% - 75% long. This tree is monoecious with unisexual flowers blossoming > 75% in April. The Yeşilırmak Delta, Samsun, Turkey, is the second largest delta plain of Turkey. Among the plants distributed in different habitats of the delta, medically important species and their usage were investigated based on the literature. It has been determined 160 species and infraspecific taxa belonging 61 families and 141 genera which can be used for medicinal purposes in the research area. Our aim is to provide a database in relation to medicinal plants distributed naturally in such a region that 65.4% of which is assigned as agricultural area. Twelve water samples were collected from sampling points in the peak of dry season in July 2015. Samples were taken from rivers, canals and pumping stations. The contents of the samples have been analyzed. The classification used to assess qualities and the suitability of irrigation water is based on FAO’s and USSL’s classification criteria of irrigation water. The study revealed that important constituents which influence the quality of irrigation water such as: electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, sodium adsorption ratio, soluble sodium percentage, residual sodium bicarbonate, permeability index and Kelly’s ratio, were found within the permissible limits of water for irrigation purposes. Therefore, the surface water of this area is deemed to be of an excellent quality and its use is highly recommended for the irrigation of crops. Croat., Vol. 7, No. 3., 227¿274, 1998, Zagreb Researching the vascular flora of the Po`ega Valley and the surrounding mountains, alto- gether 1467 plant taxa were recorded. An analysis was made of which floral elements particular plant taxa belonged to, as well as an analysis of the life forms. In the vegetation cover of this area plants of the Eurasian floral element as well as European plants represent the major propor- tion. This shows that in the phytogeographical aspect this area belongs to the Eurosiberian- Northamerican region. According to life forms, vascular plants are distributed in the following numbers: H=650, T=355, G=148, P=209, Ch=70, Hy=33.
