[email protected] Abstract: This article elaborates on an off-shell formulation of D = 4, N = 1 supergravity whose auxiliary fields comprise an antisymmetric tensor field without gauge degrees of freedom. In particular, the relation to new minimal supergravity, a supercovariant tensor calculus and the construction of invariant actions including matter fields are discussed. Introduction In the basic formulation [1,2] of pure D = 4, N = 1 supergravity, the commutator algebra of local symmetry transformations closes only on-shell. This complicates various computations, such as the construction of couplings of the supergravity multiplet (i.e., the supersymmetry multiplet with the vierbein and the gravitino) to matter multiplets, of locally supersymmetric invariants with higher derivatives and of Faddeev–Popov terms. Fortunately, there are off-shell formulations of the theory with auxiliary fields that close Citation: Brandt, F. Properties of an the algebra of local symmetry transformations off-shell.
