Due to their noxiousness and warning colouration, it is thought that they do not have many natural predators. Until now, only one successful and one aborted predation on Mantella frogs were reported. Herein, we account about two successful predations on M. aurantiaca in Torotorofotsy wetland, in central-eastern Madagascar. The first predation was observed by lizard Zoonosaurus sp. and the second predation by a snake probably belonging to Thamnosophis lateralis. Both predators did not seem to mind the taste of the M. aurantiaca and ingested it. Keywords.     CoP17 Prop. 38 Inclusion of False Tomato Frog Dyscophus guineti and Antsouhy Tomato Frog D. insularis in Appendix II Proponent: Madagascar Summary: The False Tomato Frog Dyscophus guineti and the Antsouhy Tomato Frog D. insularis comprise two of three species in the genus Dyscophus, all of which are endemic to Madagascar. The third species, D. antongilii was included in Appendix I in 1987. It is subject to a separate proposal to be transferred from Appendix I to Appendix II (Proposal 37). All three are attractive red-orange coloured frogs. Dyscophus are known to breed explosively with the availability of water during the rainy season (typically January-March) and during that time they can be found in abundance at breeding sites. Hundreds of eggs are laid in water following mating. Dyscophus guineti The known distribution of D. guineti includes a number of patches in the remnant central eastern rainforest of Madagascar. The species is secretive and believed likely to be more widespread than records indicate1. Overall population is unknown; locally the species can vary from extremely common to very rare1. Sexual maturity is attained between two and four years, comparatively earlier in males than in females2. The habitat of the species is affected by conversion of forest to agriculture, timber extraction, charcoal production and potentially small-scale mining activities. The species reportedly does not tolerate severe degredation1. There is not known to be local use of the species. As a consequence of the Appendix-I listing in 1987 of the similar Dyscophus antongilii, collectors interested in "red Dyscophus" have shifted their attention to D.

Dyscophus antongilii has been listed within CITES Appendix I since 1987 while the other two species currently have no CITES listing but proposed to be inserted into Appendix II for this year by a separate proposal. Some studies on the species led by F. Andreone demonstrate that this species is frequently found outside of protected area and one of the strategies to conservation purpose is the trade. The species is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.

Abstract: Anuran assemblages from the Eocene and Oligocene of the Phosphorites du Quercy (southwestern France) are documented by a modest number of isolated bones, incomplete skulls, and some ‘mummies’. However, at the family level, the diversity is not significantly lower than in coeval frog assemblages from other regions. By contrast, a larger number of amniote specimens and taxa are known from the Phosphorites. The sparse anuran record within the Phosphorites most likely results from the karstic environment in which the fossiliferous sites formed. Such an environment is not favorable for animals dependent on water and moisture. Upper middle and upper Eocene localities in the Phosphorites produced Alytidae, Pelobatidae, Pelodytidae and ranoids. The presence of bufonids or microhylids, and rhacophorids cannot be definitely rejected, and potentially distinctive, but unidentifiable taxa also may be present. The occurrence of Pelodytidae in the Eocene of Europe is confirmed by diagnostic bones from the Phosphorites. In Oligocene localities in the Phosphorites, anurans are even less diverse, with only Alytidae, Pelobatidae and ranoids having been recovered.

    Protection of Cultural Landscapes Extremadura and Mallorca Annual Report 2012/2013 - II Global Nature Fund Extremadura The Dehesas of the Extremadura in the Spanish southwest are over 5,000 years old, which makes them one of the oldest cultural landscapes in the world. The Dehesas, like the Middle European meadow orchards, are traditional agriculture- forest-meadow systems. This means that there are various ways of using the area and multiple ways the space offers people a livelihood. An almost natural form of this has developed in the Extremadura over time. Ancient, highly adapted farm animal breeds as well as extensive use of the stone and cork oak trees for firewood, and the proximity to natural habitats such as the Monfragüe national park make biodiversity on a scale usually only seen in tropical rainforests pos- sible. Such biodiversity is unheard of elsewhere in Europe. Characteristic of the area are the Iberian pigs that are famous for providing the “pata negra” ham. But only if they live mainly off acorns in the Dehesas. Extensive use continues to be the key to preserving this unique landscape southwest of Madrid where visitors can still experience pure nature. Even the untrained observer can spot Black Vultures, Imperial Eagles, owls, lynx and genets as well as White and Black Storks, many songbird species, several species of snakes such as the rare Montpellier snake and countless beetles, moths and grasshoppers. The GNF’s Spanish sister organization, Fundación Global Nature (FGN), has been working since 1993 to preserve and protect the Dehesas of the Extremadura. The FGN works in many areas such as environmental education, which takes place in their own environmental education center.
