  • HUNG LIU: OFFERINGS January 23-March 17, 2013
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contacts: December 12, 2012 Maysoun Wazwaz Mills College Art Museum, Program Manager 510.430.3340 or [email protected] Mills College Art Museum Announces HUNG LIU: OFFERINGS January 23-March 17, 2013 Oakland, CA—December 12, 2012. The Mills College Art Museum is pleased to present Hung Liu: Offerings a rare opportunity to experience two of the Oakland-based artist’s most significant large- scale installations: Jiu Jin Shan (Old Gold Mountain) (1994) and Tai Cang—Great Granary (2008). Hung Liu: Offerings will be on view from January 23 through March 17, 2013. The opening reception takes place on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 from 6:00–8:00 pm and free shuttle service will be provided from the MacArthur Bart station during the opening. Recognized as America's most important Chinese artist, Hung Liu’s installations have played a central role in her work throughout her career. In Jiu Jin Shan (Old Gold Mountain), over two hundred thousand fortune cookies create a symbolic gold mountain that engulfs a crossroads of railroad tracks running beneath. The junction where the tracks meet serves as both a crossroads and 1 terminus, a visual metaphor of the cultural intersection of East and West. Liu references not only the history of the Chinese laborers who built the railroads to support the West Coast Gold Rush, but also the hope shared among these migrant workers that they could find material prosperity in the new world. The Mills College Art Museum is excited to be the first venue outside of China to present Tai Cang— Great Granary.

Speaking truth to power. Aaron Wildavsky – GSPP Founding Dean Welcome Welcome to Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy (GSPP). We prepare talented people to become outstanding public policy leaders. We cultivate an intellectual community that invents and promotes innovative policy ideas. We seek to change the world by bringing knowledge and understanding to policy debates. GSPP is the nation’s premier graduate institution for education and research in public policy. It is a diverse and exciting community of students, faculty, staff and visitors, all committed to the highest standards of policy analysis, intellectual rigor, and energetic debate. Our faculty members not only perform cutting edge research—they shape policy through their public commentaries and their active involvement in government. Our staff supports our mission through their exceptional experience, professionalism, and dedication. Our students come with rich domestic and international experiences, and they bring extraordinary commitment, engagement, and energy to the school. The Goldman School was one of the very first institutions in the United States established for the analysis and development of public policy. For over forty years GSPP has led the way in the teaching and practice of policy analysis—using microeconomic, statistical, political, management, legal and information- technology skills to help solve real-world problems. Today, policy analysis drives governments towards reasoned analysis and policy innovation. With the new millennium, public policy must deal with the challenges of global warming, world food and economic security, AIDS, stopping terrorism, and improving governance. GSPP prepares leaders who can meet these challenges. GSPP students are exposed to the unparalleled intellectual, professional and social experiences that only a great university like Berkeley can offer.

Originally a movie theater and theater, the venue switched to being primarily a cinema until 1966 when it finally closed its doors along with several other businesses in downtown Oakland. It was nearly demolished after it had by Hitchster been vacant for some time; however, the Fox Theater avoided demolition when it was declared an Oakland City Landmark. The venue reopened in February 2009 as a concert hall and music venue; it has a complete re- imagined decor with giant golden Buddhas and Middle Eastern architecture.
