Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio Honors Thesis Caleb G. Vanden Eynden Department: Music Advisor: Samuel N. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.

Zvedni se a jásej Přátelé, posluchači Rádia Student, vítám vás v novém roce, přeji vám, aby byl fajn… a snad i o něco méně zábavný než byl konec toho loňského. Čímž děkuji všem, kteří na mě zvonili na Běhounské v neděli, po Silvestru, o půl osmé ráno. Jestliže jsme posledně s americkými představiteli pompézního rocku stavěli malé hudební katedrály, které se často po nějaké době ukázaly být spíše kulisami z papundeklu, dnes se budeme pouze bavit. Takže nastražte uši a srdce… Tady jsou Fatback Band a jejich Big City z roku 1979. The Fatback Band Big City Tahle devítičlenná černošská kapela nahrála od počátku 70. do konce 80. let okolo dvaceti desek, ale skutečně na vrcholu byla právě jen těch několik let, kdy ve skladbách jako Backstrokin´ nebo třeba Big City dělala styl, kterému se říkávalo dance-, nebo taky disco-funk. U nás, v Česku, nemá slůvko disco příliš dobrý zvuk, a proto bych rád upozornil, že je opravdu dobré dělat rozdíl mezi tím, co produkovala pod tímto názvem německá studia, a tím, co hráli třeba američtí Chic nebo Atlantic Starr. Ostatně, páření funku s čistě taneční, klubovou muzikou dopadlo velmi dobře… Výsledek je hudba sice převážně k tanci, ale přece jen o poznání zemitější… S těžším zadkem řeklo by se. Ono to zpravidla nebývá míněno jako lichotka, když se o něčem praví, že to „má těžkej zadek“, ale pro funk to znamená „fakt dobrý“. L.T.D. Back In Love Again Tak tohle byli L.T.D. a jejich písnička Back In Love Again . Člověk by řekl, že z pohledu pravověrného funkera je to ryzí popina, ale basový marš téhle skladby potvrzuje, že dance funk nikdy není tak telecí jako „správný“ disko.
