Today, forty-eight of the fifty states have gubernatorial term lengths of four years (see Figure 1). Vermont and New Hampshire are the only remaining states in the Union with two-year terms. Bush announced his decision to nominate John Ashcroft to serve as U.S. Attorney General on December 22, 2000. Don Siegelman is fighting to keep his job against Republican U.S. Rep. Bob Riley. Recent polls have consistently shown the two in a statistical dead heat, however, as recently as May, Siegelman was down 8 points to Riley. Clearly, this is not good for a first-term governor who won his last election by 16 points. A mid-September University of Alabama-Birmingham poll had Riley up 45-43% while an early September University of Southern Alabama poll showed Riley ahead 44-41%. Riley has hammered away at Siegelman’s ethics problems which include fees he’d received from his law firm while running the state (after an investigation, he was cleared) and giving state contracts to political cronies without bids from others. One of Riley’s ads boasts that he wants to “end corruption,” he’s “an honest leader,” and he kept his term-limits promise; another features an endorsement from his wife - Siegelman has stayed afloat by attacking his challenger on a variety of issues.

Good evening, and welcome back to the White House. For some of you, this is the first time; welcome. I want to begin by acknowledging your outstanding chairs of this extraordinary organization: Jim Douglas of Vermont and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Thank you so much for the great work that you guys do each and every day. I also want to let everybody know that this is not too stiff of an affair—[laughter]— because last year Ed Rendell led a conga line. [Laughter] We still have photographs of some of you that we may use at any point. [Laughter] But it's interesting to think about where we were last year. Last year we were in the midst of what was the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Each of you in your own respective States, I think, saw how brutal it was on so many families: hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs every month; home foreclosures; small businesses having to shut down, unable to make payroll; and people not sure about the future and unclear about whether or not we were going to be able to pull ourselves out. And I think that it is worth reminding ourselves of how urgent the situation was, and it's worth this organization taking some extraordinary credit for helping to right the ship, working, I know, with my Vice President, Joe Biden, who's done outstanding work.

In acquir- ing at least 349 electoral votes, the Illinois Senator garnered victories in key states in every region of the country—New England, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest, Plains, Mountain West, Southwest, and Northwest. As John Kerry did before him, Senator Obama carried every state in the Northeast. His break- through states, ones he took out of the GOP column from 2004, were Florida, Ohio, Colorado, New Mexico, Virginia, Nevada, and Iowa. As this is written, Obama holds a small lead in North Carolina, a state that went to Bush in 2004. Senator McCain maintains a small lead in Missouri, also a “red” state last time.
