U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II Combat Chronology 1941 - 1945 Compiled by Kit C. Carter Robert Mueller Center for Air Force History Washington, DC 1991 PREFACE The chronology is concerned primarily with operations of the US Army Air Forces and its combat units between December 7, 1941 and September 15, 1945. It is designed as a companion reference to the seven-volume history of The Army Air Forces in World War 11, edited by Wesley Frank Craven and James Lea Cate. The research was a cooperative endeavor carried out in the United States Air Force historical archives by the Research Branch of the Albert F. Simpson Historical Research Center. Such an effort has demanded certain changes in established historical methodology, as well as some arbitrary rules for presentation of the results. After International and US events, entries are arranged geographically. They begin with events at Army Air Forces Headquarters in Washington then proceed eastward around the world, using the location of the headquarters of the numbered air forces as the basis for placement. For this reason, entries concerning the Ninth Air Force while operating in the Middle East follow Twelfth Air Force. When that headquarters moves to England in October 1943, the entries are shifted to follow Eighth Air Force. The entries end with those numbered air forces which remained in the Zone of the Interior, as well as units originally activated in the ZI, then designated for later movement overseas, such as Ninth and Tenth Air Forces. The ZI entries do not include Eighth and Twentieth Air Forces, which were established in the ZI with the original intent of placing them in those geographical locations with which they became historically identified. -

THE ME-RC BRIDGE (Messina-Reggio Calabria) Giovanni Saccà1 The Messina – Reggio Calabria bridge as integration solution for two metropolitan cities ABSTRACT Numerous hypotheses and projects have been made to overcome the Strait of Messina, most of which are located in the narrowest area or in correspondence of the "Sella dello Stretto" where the minimum distance between the coast of the Italian peninsula and Sicily is reached (Scilla and Cariddi). As is well known, unfortunately, the chosen solution of the 3,300 m single span bridge has never been realized despite the fact that a special international tender has been carried out since the contract was declared lapsed pursuant to Law 1158/71 and the Company Messina SpA has been placed in liquidation. In the Document on Economics and Finance 2017 (DEF 2017) annexed "Infrastructures" of Italian Government, as part of the priority railway interventions, it was envisaged that a "Feasibility Study" should be prepared with a view to enhancing the possible options for both stable and non-permanent crossing the Strait of Messina along the "Napoli-Palermo" corridor. This intervention was also included in the attached DEF 2018 "Connecting Italy" for the Southern Region (or “Mezzogiorno”), which states, inter alia, that for the crossing of the Strait a feasibility planning phase is underway: "The options to be considered for the verification of feasibility of the connection, stable or not stable, through the Strait of Messina, will refer alternately to the road, railway or maritime mode". This article aims to contribute to the search for a solution to permanently cross the Strait of Messina, while at the same time solving the problem of integration between the two metropolitan cities of the strait in a single large city. -

This PhD research includes an attached Documentary Film. 3 4 ABSTRACT This is a study of contemporary uses of the myth of Scylla and Charybdis, often personified as female monstrosities or explained as a rock and whirlpool in Italy’s Strait of Reggio and Messina. Focusing on theoretical, methodological, and disciplinary issues of historical transmission, it addresses media appropriations of these signifiers of Greco-Roman traditions, as well as abject femininity, animality, and Otherness. Nineteenth-century European travellers visited the Strait in search of the landmarks of Homer’s Odyssey. The area attracted the travellers’ antiquarian appreciation of the myth-place and its relation with legends of marine dangers, a narrative that later reached broader audiences through twentieth-century international tourism and media. In parallel, Scylla and Charybdis were popularized as monstrous figures in the imaginaries of travel, horror, fantasy, and erotica. Drawing on deconstructive approaches to myth studies, the thesis analyses the Scylla and Charybdis motif in the broader context of ideas about antiquity in historiographical, psychoanalytic, and positivist perspectives.
