  • The Best of the Whitesell Prize Competition 2005-2006
The Best of the Whitesell Prize Competition 2005-2006 The Writing Center’s Phyllis C. Whitesell Prizes for Expository Writing in General Education 3rd Edition, Summer 2006 The Writing Center @ Franklin and Marshall College Lancaster, PA 17604-3003 717.291.3866 Preface The Writing Center’s Phyllis C. Whitesell Prizes honor excellent student writing in Franklin and Marshall’s General Education curriculum. Each year the Writing Center invites submissions and awards a prize for the best essay written in a course that fulfills the First-Year Writing Requirement and for the best essay from a Foundations course. This booklet contains the prize-winning and honorable mention essays from this year’s competition. Named for the emeritus Director of F&M’s Writing Center, the Whitesell Prizes serve several goals. In addition to honoring both Phyllis’s dedication to teaching writing and the achievements of the College’s students writers themselves, the Whitesell Prizes seek to add to the vitality of the College’s General Education curriculum by getting students to think of their intellectual efforts as ongoing enterprises (revision, often after the essay has been graded and the class is completed, is a requirement of the competition). Also, by involving faculty and Writing Center tutors in the judging of the essays—and by making this booklet available to the College community, the Whitesell competition hopes to foster a fuller awareness of the interesting work being done in our Foundations and First-Year Writing requirement courses. My great appreciation goes to this year’s Whitesell Prize judges. Prof. Patrick Bernard, Prof.

  • Crucibles of Virtue and Vice: the Acculturation of Transatlantic Army Officers, 1815-1945
CRUCIBLES OF VIRTUE AND VICE: THE ACCULTURATION OF TRANSATLANTIC ARMY OFFICERS, 1815-1945 John F. Morris Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 John F. Morris All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Crucibles of Virtue and Vice: The Acculturation of Transatlantic Army Officers, 1815-1945 John F. Morris Throughout the long nineteenth century, the European Great Powers and, after 1865, the United States competed for global dominance, and they regularly used their armies to do so. While many historians have commented on the culture of these armies’ officer corps, few have looked to the acculturation process itself that occurred at secondary schools and academies for future officers, and even fewer have compared different formative systems. In this study, I home in on three distinct models of officer acculturation—the British public schools, the monarchical cadet schools in Imperial Germany, Austria, and Russia, and the US Military Academy—which instilled the shared and recursive sets of values and behaviors that constituted European and American officer cultures. Specifically, I examine not the curricula, policies, and structures of the schools but the subterranean practices, rituals, and codes therein. What were they, how and why did they develop and change over time, which values did they transmit and which behaviors did they perpetuate, how do these relate to nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century social and cultural phenomena, and what sort of ethos did they produce among transatlantic army officers? Drawing on a wide array of sources in three languages, including archival material, official publications, letters and memoirs, and contemporary nonfiction and fiction, I have painted a highly detailed picture of subterranean life at the institutions in this study.

  • Chapter One: Postwar Resentment and the Invention of Middle America 10
MIAMI UNIVERSITY The Graduate School Certificate for Approving the Dissertation We hereby approve the Dissertation of Jeffrey Christopher Bickerstaff Doctor of Philosophy ________________________________________ Timothy Melley, Director ________________________________________ C. Barry Chabot, Reader ________________________________________ Whitney Womack Smith, Reader ________________________________________ Marguerite S. Shaffer, Graduate School Representative ABSTRACT TALES FROM THE SILENT MAJORITY: CONSERVATIVE POPULISM AND THE INVENTION OF MIDDLE AMERICA by Jeffrey Christopher Bickerstaff In this dissertation I show how the conservative movement lured the white working class out of the Democratic New Deal Coalition and into the Republican Majority. I argue that this political transformation was accomplished in part by what I call the "invention" of Middle America. Using such cultural representations as mainstream print media, literature, and film, conservatives successfully exploited what came to be known as the Social Issue and constructed "Liberalism" as effeminate, impractical, and elitist. Chapter One charts the rise of conservative populism and Middle America against the backdrop of 1960s social upheaval. I stress the importance of backlash and resentment to Richard Nixon's ascendancy to the Presidency, describe strategies employed by the conservative movement to win majority status for the GOP, and explore the conflict between this goal and the will to ideological purity. In Chapter Two I read Rabbit Redux as John Updike's attempt to model the racial education of a conservative Middle American, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, in "teach-in" scenes that reflect the conflict between the social conservative and Eastern Liberal within the author's psyche. I conclude that this conflict undermines the project and, despite laudable intentions, Updike perpetuates caricatures of the Left and hastens Middle America's rejection of Liberalism.

In this paper I answer this question by providing evidence from The Robert Altman Archives at The University of Michigan, and from interviews with Frank Beaver (Professor of Communications and a colleague of Altman’s at Michigan), Joan Tewkesbury (screenwriter for Nashville), and Robert Harders (screenwriter for the unmade Nashville Nashville). Specifically, I will address three Altman films: Nashville (1975), Secret Honor (1985), and Nashville Nashville (unmade). In uncovering new information about these films, their public receptions, and Altman’s rationale and techniques for making them, I show that Altman was a thoughtful and politically-driven director who used both innovative film techniques and symbolism to create his films.

A Conversation with Mark Salter, Author of “The Luckiest Man: Life with John McCain” Join Michael Zeldin in his conversation with Mark Salter, Author of The Luckiest Man: Life with John McCain. Salter collaborated with John McCain on all seven of their books, including The Restless Wave, Faith of My Fathers, Worth the Fighting For, Why Courage Matters, Character Is Destiny, Hard Call, and Thirteen Soldiers. He served on Senator McCain’s staff for eighteen years. Guest Mark Salter Author of “The Luckiest Man: Life with John McCain” Mark Salter is an American speechwriter from Davenport, Iowa, known for his collaborations with United States Senator John McCain on several nonfiction books as well as on political speeches. Salter also served as McCain’s chief of staff for a while, although he had left that position by 2008. About the Book More so than almost anyone outside of McCain’s immediate family, Mark Salter had unparalleled access to and served to influence the Senator’s thoughts and actions, cowriting seven books with him and acting as a valued confidant. Now, in The Luckiest Man, Salter draws on the storied facets of McCain’s early biography as well as the later-in-life political philosophy for which the nation knew and loved him, delivering an intimate and comprehensive account of McCain’s life and philosophy. Salter covers all the major events of McCain’s life—his peripatetic childhood, his naval service—but introduces, too, aspects of the man that the public rarely saw and hardly knew. Woven throughout this narrative is also the story of Salter and McCain’s close relationship, including how they met, and why their friendship stood the test of time in a political world known for its fickle personalities and frail bonds.

  • Profiles in Courage of Community College Leaders
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Mari Kruger for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Education presented on June 14, 2007. Title: Profiles in Courage of Community College Leaders. Abstract approved: George H. Copa The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experience of courage among community college leaders across the United States. The following questions guided the research: (1) What is the courageous experience like for a community college leader? (2) What is the process of courage development? (3) What are the internal and external conditions which are most likely to lead a community college leader to act courageously? The research design included a qualitative/interpretive methodology and instrumental case study method with nine community college leaders’ selected using purposive sampling. Overall themes that emerged characterizing the experience of courage were: (a) real risks, (b) reasoned choice, (c) call to act, (d) facing adversity, (e) loneliness and isolation, (f) staying power, (g) maintaining personal integrity, and (h) preservation. Embedded in themes were sub-themes of the courageous experience. Prior, present, and future time horizons comprised the conceptual framework of the development process of becoming courageous for leaders. The prior time horizon focused on fundamentals included past practice, value formation, and consistency. During the present time horizon, leaders moved through three phases, each phase comprised of several elements of courage development. Elements within phases included fear, taking responsibility, risk, and reasoned choice (Phase One); action, focusing of attention, adversity, suffering loss (Phase Two); and, fortitude under stress, management of controversy, and survival amidst challenges (Phase Three). Outcomes of moving through the phases of the present time horizon were self integrity, institutional sustainability, and self release.
