Head coach Chuck Winstead is in his third season at the helm of the LSU Men’s Golf program and leads one of the more talented young squads in the nation for 2007-08.

The LSU men’s golf team opened the 2007-08 season on Sept. 10 in Rotz earned his second straight top-10 finish by tying for eighth place at 2- Chattanooga, Tenn., with a young squad that featured three highly-touted under 214 for the championship. Following its appearance in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, the squad will have one last opportunity to prepare for the 2007 Southeastern Conference Men’s Golf Championships as it joins 14 other teams from across the South in the inaugural Reunion Intercollegiate. Conference rival Ole Miss will play host to the event as it will be held from April 7-8 at Reunion Golf and Country Club in Jackson, Miss. The SEC Championships return to St. Simons Island, Ga., for the eighth straight season with Frederica Golf Club playing host to the event from April 18- 20. 2007 SEC Men’s Golf Championships April 20-22, 2007 St. Simons Island, Ga. Sea Island Golf Club -- Seaside Course (Par 70) After a one-month layoff following their appearance in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, the Tigers returned to the state of Georgia for the second time during the spring to compete in the most competitive conference tournament in all of college golf with an appearance in the 2007 SEC Men’s Golf Championships. The championship returned to the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga., for the seventh straight year. After tying for third place after the opening round, the Tigers finished the event in ninth place with a team total of 52- over 892. Noonan was the team’s top finisher as he tied for 16th place at 11-over 221, while Wells earned his second career Second-Team All-SEC selection following the tournament.

PREVIEW COACHES Three Former Tigers Represent LSU PLAYERS REVIEW at PGA Championship RECORDS David Toms, Brian Bateman and Phil Schmitt teed it up against 156 of the game’s HISTORY best players at the 89th PGA Championship this past summer as the former LSU standouts entered the chase for “Glory’s Last Shot” at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Toms won the only major championship of his illustrious career at the 2001 PGA Championship when he outlasted PGA Tour great for the title at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Duluth, Ga. Bateman made his second career start in a major championship at this year’s PGA Championship, while Schmitt made his first career appearance since turning professional in 1996.

Bateman Earns First PGA Tour Win at Brian Bateman, David Toms, Phil Schmitt 2007 Bateman earned his first career PGA Tour victory in July after sinking a 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole at the 2007 Buick Open at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Mich. Bateman, who turned professional in 1996 after a successful four-year career at LSU, fired a final round 3-under 69 to finish at 15-under 273 for the championship and one shot clear of three players already in the clubhouse hoping for a playoff. With the win, Bateman earned $882,000, an exemption into the 2008 and exempt status for the 2008 season.

Bateman a Candidate for PGA Tour’s Comeback Player of the Year When postseason award ballots were mailed to players following the 2007 season, Bateman was one of three finalists on the ballot for this year’s PGA Tour Comeback Player of the Year. The Monroe native enjoyed his most successful season as a professional as he won his first career PGA Tour victory with a win at the 2007 Buick Open in July. Bateman, who earned the final card out of Q-School prior to the start of the 2007 season, finished 94th on the PGA Tour Money List with $1,022,763 in earnings for the year. He has earned an exemption into the 2008 Masters Tournament and will compete with exempt status for the 2008 season.

Former Tiger Lee Wins U.S. Senior Amateur Title Former LSU All-American Stan Lee became the youngest USGA Senior Amateur champion in history with his 4-and-3 win in the final match at the 2007 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kan., in September. Lee became the second former LSU golfer to win a USGA Amateur Championship at Flint Hills as Lady Tiger Meredith Duncan defeated Chile’s Nicole Perrot in 37 holes to win the 2001 U.S. Women’s Amateur title. Lee, who at 55 years and five days, surpassed the previous record of 55 years, three months and 18 days set by former U.S. Senior Amateur champion Bill Bosshard in 1991.

PREVIEW Toms Continues Major COACHES PLAYERS Championship Success in 2007 REVIEW Toms has established himself as one of the elite performers on the PGA Tour since RECORDS joining the professional ranks in 1992 and continued his outstanding performance HISTORY in major championships during the 2007 season. The former LSU All-American earned back-to-back top-10 finishes in majors as he followed a ninth-place finish at the 2007 Masters Tournament in April by tying for fifth place at the 107th U.S. Open Championship in June. Toms has earned a total of eight top-10 finishes in major championships during his illustrious career. He was also one of three former Tiger standouts to compete in the 89th PGA Championship in July.

Toms Leads U.S. to Victory at The David Toms Not only did Toms enjoy a successful season in major championships in 2007, but he also helped the United States win its second straight Presidents Cup title in September as the team’s leading scorer. Toms totaled 4.5 points for the week as the United States knocked off the International Team by a 19.5-14.5 margin. He posted a perfect 2-0-0 mark in foursomes, a 1-0-0 mark in singles and a 1-0-1 mark in four ball for a cumulative 4-0-1 mark in the four-day competition. was the next highest scorer for the United States as he tallied four points on the week with a perfect 4-0-0 record during the competition.

Schmitt Among 20 PGA Professionals to Punch Ticket to PGA Championship Schmitt was one of 20 golfers to receive an exemption to compete in the 89th PGA Championship as he earned a top-20 finish at the 40th PGA Professional National Championship in Sunriver, Ore., in June. Schmitt finished in a tie for ninth place in a field of 312 of the nation’s top PGA Professionals to punch his ticket to the 2007 PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Schmitt, who is the PGA Head Professional at The Bluffs in St. Francisville, La., made his first career appearance in a major championship since turning pro in 1996 after a stellar collegiate career at LSU.

Sterling Earns PGA Tour Card for 2008 Season Former LSU All-American Scott Sterling was one of a record 25 players who secured a 2008 PGA Tour card in November after competing at the season- ending Nationwide Tour Championship at Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif. Sterling finished the season ranked No. 21 on the final money list for the Nationwide Tour with $216,324 in earnings. He will join Toms and Bateman on the PGA Tour beginning in 2008. Sterling was an honorable mention All- American in 1994 and a two-time All-SEC selection during his collegiate career.

A Louisiana Legend and one of the greatest college baseball coaches of all time, J. THIS IS LSU Stanley “Skip” Bertman has made the seamless transition into the athletics director’s PREVIEW chair with the same enthusiasm, vision and demand for excellence that were trademarks of his stellar coaching career. COACHES The 2007-08 season will mark Bertman’s final year as LSU athletics director. After PLAYERS his tenure ends on June 30, 2008, he will remain at LSU as athletics director emeritus REVIEW through 2010, working as a vital fund-raiser for the university. RECORDS In six years as LSU’s director of athletics, Bertman has added to his impressive list of on-the-field achievements. Under his direction, LSU has enjoyed arguably the greatest HISTORY athletics seasons in the history of the institution. The 2006-07 season saw 12 LSU teams finish among the nation’s top 25, including a No. 3 final ranking for the football team and a fourth consecutive Final Four appearance by the women’s basketball squad. The LSU men’s and women’s track and field teams each finished No. 2 in the nation. In 2005-06, LSU joined North Carolina (1997-98) as the only schools to have their football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams all finish in the nation’s Top 5. LSU in 2005-06 also became the first school in SEC history to win outright league championships in men’s and women’s basketball in the same season. In 2004-05, 14 LSU teams advanced to the post-season, and in 2003-04, three teams won national championships, nine teams finished in the nation’s top ten, and fourteen teams ranked in the top 25. Under Bertman’s direction, LSU teams have also recorded improved grade point averages across the board, making the student-athlete experience a success on and off the fields of competition. Before working at Miami, Bertman was renowned for his coaching excellence. In 11 National Coach of the Year seasons at Miami Beach High School, he directed the Hi-Tides to a state championship 2000, 1997, 1996, 1993, 1991, 1986 and two runners-up finishes and he was named Florida's Coach of the Year on three occasions. College World Series Appearances In 1975, Bertman coached at Miami-Dade Downtown, leaving after one season to 2000, 1998, 1997, 1996, 1994, join legendary head coach Ron Fraser at Miami.
