OLYMPIA FIELDS COUNTRY CLUB/FIGHTING ILLINI INVITATIONAL Illinois hosted the 13th-annual Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational Sept. 14-16, 2018, at the famed Olympia Fields Country Club north course. Olympia Fields C.C. is home to several premier events, including the 2015 U.S. Amateur. The club has hosted two U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, five Western Opens and a U.S. Senior Open among other high-level tournaments. The OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational is held on the 7,353-yard, Par 70 North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club and continually welcomes some of the nation’s toughest competition. The 2018 tournament field included 13 programs ranked or receiving votes in the Golfweek Bushnell Preseason Coaches Poll. In addition to the No. 16-ranked Illini, the field featured No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Alabama, No. 4 Texas A&M, No. T-11 California, No. T-11 Stanford, No. 14 Baylor, No. 20 Southern California, No. 23 UNLV, No. 25 Florida State, RV Purdue, RV South Carolina, and Indiana. Fighting Illini men’s golf finished in sixth place overall at the 2018 OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational, led by sophomore Brendan O’Reilly and junior Giovanni Tadiotto who tied for 16th with total scores4-over par. Junior Michael Feagles also finished among the top 20 individuals, closing the tournament with a score of 5-over par. Illinois closed the tournament with a total score 22-over. Oklahoma State (-11) won the tournament title, while USC (+7) and California (+16) rounded out the top three teams. Illinois head coach Mike Small was invited to be an honorary member of the Olympia Fields Country Club in 2007, becoming the first to receive such a membership since 2003, when was honored with the invitation. “The tournament is run as a first-class event by the members here,” Small said. “It means a lot to the University of Illinois to be associated with Olympia Fields, and I know it means a lot to Olympia Fields to put on such a great event. 2018-19 SEASON RECAP THE ROAD TO NATIONALS B1G POSTSEASON ACCOLADES Illinois made its 12th consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships and the Fighting Illini men’s golf was recognized by the Big Ten Conference following the Big Ten 27th in program history this season. The Orange and Blue have advanced to the Championships as the league announced its postseason awards. Head Coach Mike Small was National Championship in 14 seasons under the direction of head coach Mike Small. honored as Big Ten Men’s Golf Coach of the Year for the fifth-straight season, while four Illini Illinois owns the second-longest active streak in the nation, advancing to the NCAA were selected as All-Big Ten honorees. BARLOW NAMED FINALIST FOR OUTSTANDING ASSISTANT AWARD NEW ADDITION - JERRY JI Fighting Illini men’s golf assistant coach Zach Barlow was recognized as a finalist for the 2019 Jan Illinois head men’s golf coach Mike Small announced the addition of Jerry Ji to the Illinois men’s Strickland Outstanding Coach of the Year Award presented by TaylorMade, as announced by the Golf golf program for 2019. Joining the Fighting Illini squad from the Netherlands, Ji is currently ranked Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Developed in 2003, the Strickland Award is presented to as the No. 7 male golfer in the European Golf Rankings. Ji will bring worldwide playing experience the NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA or NJCAA assistant coach that, among other things, has excelled in and a championship mentality to the Illini squad upon his arrival at the University of Illinois. Ji working with their student-athletes both on the course and in the classroom. This season, Barlow has has acquired an impressive resume throughout his junior golf career so far.
