Part Two will cover the years from 1920 to the beginning of recorded sound in 1929. This is the first comprehensive study of the beginning of cinema’s earliest depictions of the journalist, mostly newspaper reporters, editors, and publishers. Newspaper fiction flourished at a time when journalism “was a revolutionary force, tearing up traditions, redefining public morality, and lending voice and encouragement to the disenfranchised. It reflected currents sweeping through every phase of American life. The skyrocketing circulations, the manic search for exclusive news, the sensational headlines, and the concentration of newspaper ownership were signs of an America changing from a rural society to an urban and industrial one. Since journalism so clearly mirrored and so loudly supported the new order, it became the preeminent symbol for the mechanization, standardization, democratization, and vulgarization of culture.”1 Historian Howard Good points out that the 1890s “represented a watershed not only in American journalism but also in American history.

It is the most recent movie to feature a paint or spray that confers invisibility to anything it covers. Note that Bersakov is the spitting image of Dmitri Mendeleev. Photo by Disney Archives Curator Dave Smith. Before you can study a movie theme, you need to create a list of movies with that theme. It is great when someone else has already created a list because you can use that as your starting point for verification. While creating my list of invisibility movies, I found that no one had yet created the so- called definitive list. Instead, I found many silent movies with the word “invisible” or “invisibility” in the title but with no accompanying information about their narratives. I had expected they would all be based on Herbert George Wells’s The Invisible Man novel of 1897 because the 1933 version by director James Whale was based upon that novel. When I found it difficult to determine whether the causative effect was chemical, physical, or otherwise, I decided to keep track of all of them. Whenever I found a synopsis with enough detail to make the determination, I noted it in my list. My list of 18 silent invisibility movies, serials, and cartoons (see list below) was pieced together from lists of other types of movies prepared by other researchers (Lahue 1968 Bound and Gagged: The History of the Silent Serial Cranberry, NJ: A.

The project focuses upon women’s literary engagement with silent cinema as generative of a female film culture, looking at materials such as fan letters, fan magazines, popular novels, short story papers, novelizations, critical journals and newspaper criticism. Exploring this diverse range of women’s cinema writing, the thesis seeks to make an original contribution to feminist film historiography. Focusing upon the mediations between different kinds of women’s cinema writing, the thesis poses key questions about how the feminist film historian weights original sources in the reclamation of silent female film culture, relative to the varying degrees of cultural authority with which different women commentated upon, reflected upon, and creatively responded to film culture.

La rassegna, giunta alla sua seconda edizione, è realizzata in collaborazione con il DAMS dell’Università Roma Tre, con il Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografa e con il Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma. L’edizione di quest’anno prevede cinque appuntamenti a ingresso gratuito, con proiezioni musicate dalla Scuola di musica applicata del Conservatorio Santa Cecilia, dalla Roma Tre Jazz Band e dall’Orchestra universitaria di Parma. Le pellicole sono state rese disponibili grazie al lavoro della Cineteca Nazionale di Roma e alla cortesia della Mary Pickford Foundation di Los Angeles, della Cineteca di Bologna, del Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino e dell’Eye Filmmuseum di Amsterdam. Il programma s’incentra sul ruolo delle donne ai primordi della nascente arte cinematografca, con l’obiettivo di sottolineare non soltanto il contributo che, a partire dagli anni Dieci del Novecento, le attrici hanno offerto all’emergere del fenomeno del divismo, ma anche di valorizzare il lavoro delle numerose registe che hanno avuto carriere importanti, ma spesso dimenticate. Il progetto prevede anche la pubblicazione di un catalogo critico e illustrato dei flm scelti per le proiezioni, curato da Veronica Pravadelli e comprensivo di saggi scritti da studiose e studiosi di cinema di livello internazionale.
