WASHBURN UNIVERSITY STUDENT-ATHLETE HANDBOOK 2020-21 Home of the Ichabods #GOBODS Did You Know... How Washburn started? • 1865, the Congregational Church established a college in Topeka, KS named Lincoln Col- lege (after Abraham Lincoln). Due to economic hardships following the Civil War, a fund- raising event took place in New England. A school official was presented $25,000 by Ich- abod Washburn. Who Ichabod Washburn is? • A church deacon known for his support for education for women and championing the aboli- tionist cause. In 1868, the school was renamed Washburn College in gratitude of the donor. What an Ichabod is? • In 1904, the Kaw Yearbook referred to the baseball players as “Sons of Ichabod”. In 1934, Bradbury Thompson created the image of an Ichabod; the man sported the dapper attire of a blue tailcoat and a bow tie, red top hat and shoes, and yellow pants. WASHBURN FIGHT SONG The name of Washburn shall never fall, Midst the great and small, she’s the best of all; For her fair name, then, we’ll win the game, And add another victor’s crown So, then, we’ll smash, crash against the line “As in Auld Lang Syne,” crush them down, So cheer now, yes, cheer, cheer, cheer, Just for Washburn and her team! OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE STATE UNIVERSITY February 2017 OPSU.edu Spring Back-to-School PANHANDLE STATE 1 Campus Update role in the community. In the past 12 months, the Bank’s employees have devoted time and energy to over 50 local boards and projects. Sally Hawkins, the Bank’s Chief Financial Officer, said “We are grateful for the support the Oklahoma Panhandle has given us, and we appreciate the opportunity we have to make a difference in our community. What better way to mark our 40th Anniversary than to acknowledge the critical role OPSU plays in our local economy? Roughly thirty percent of the Bank’s employees graduated from Panhandle State. Without this University, our communities would not be what they are, and this Bank would not be what it is. We owe a lot to OPSU, and the Bank is committed to supporting the University’s bright future.” The University House is estimated to be complete this summer. The Baggerly family has had a strong presence in the Oklahoma Panhandle for well over 100 years. Dorothy Baggerly and her late husband, Max, were from Beaver, Okla., and they have owned businesses in the Oklahoma Panhandle all of their lives. Max’s father, Lin Baggerly, operated an International Dealership in Beaver from the early 1930’s thru 1948. Max Baggerly operated the Construction International dealership until about 1960 when he converted it to the B&B Sales store. Additional stores Underway at were added in Perryton, Texas and Guymon, Okla. in 1965 and 1966. Max and Steve Baggerly operated those University House stores until they sold them to employees in1989.

  • Head Coach Jim Flanery 14Th Season October Edition, 2015
Creighton Women’s Basketball Newsletter Big East Conference Head Coach Jim Flanery 14th Season October Edition, 2015 A NOTE FROM FLAN... Greetings, I just returned from Big East Media Day in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Sometimes I have to pinch myself that a kid from Guthrie Center, Iowa gets to do what I get to do for a living. The opportunity that basketball has aff orded me to travel is something I never could have foreseen. I never got on an airplane until I’d lived two decades. Though travel is educational and exhilarating in so many ways, that’s a really small part of why I have to pinch myself. Really, my greatest professional fortune lies in getting to coach women of high character at a terrifi c university. Coaching women’s basketball at Creighton is an honor. It is hard in the ways that coaching is hard. Winning is important and the pressure competitive people put on themselves to achieve is something that can be stressful. But, at least in my mind, that is balanced against the easy part of getting to work everyday with eager, hard-working, enthusiastic and thoughtful young women. It is also balanced with getting to work with fun, talented, and driven staff members. In fact, the opportunity to help educate and to develop relationships with young women pursuing excellence in the classrooms and on the court is priceless. So too is the coach-coach relationship I have with our staff . They are super fun people to be around, and it’s easy for me to fi nd opportunities to learn from them daily.
