A STEP BACK IN TIME

It’s time for a flashback. Did you know the old Eagle Farm Airport was Brisbane’s first aerodrome? Similar to an airport but smaller in scale, aerodromes can host cargo and passenger flights and even military air bases. The old Eagle Farm Airport opened in the 1920s and was used by several aviation operators including Qantas. In 1928, the famous Australian aviator, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, made the very first trans-Pacific flight from the United States to Australia, arriving at the Eagle Farm Airport. An iconic figure, the newly completed Kingsford Smith Drive was named after him. The site was closed in 1931 when Archerfield became Brisbane’s primary airport. Almost 10 years later however, Eagle Farm was reinstated during World War II for airfield Photography: Brisbane Racing Club & State Library of Queensland training and services.
