Catalogue of Eighteenth Century Mezzotints : on Exhibition at The • > XVIII CENTURY t > Catalogue of Eighteenth Century iWe^otint0 On Exhibition at the Galleries ofMts&xz. J¥l Unoeito & Co, 3SS Fifth Avenue, New York. December igio r HE finest reproductions in black and white ever produced were those made by the XVIII century mezzotint engravers or more properly "Scrapers". Their work translated the tones and values of the orig inals so perfectly that one even feels their color. To arrive at this result it required more than the ordinary mechani cal skill; they could not make use of a photograph, as they do to-day to assist them, for this process had not then been discovered. The increasing demand and consequent diminished supply of fine impressions has made it almost as difficult to procure certain examples as it is to secure the original paintings. NOTE—First impressions, Artists Proofs, number of ten less than 30 perfect copies, owing to the softness of the copper plates. In this epoch they were not steel faced; the discovery not being made until the early part of the XIX century. The exhibition we now have comprises many rare and beautiful impressions, impressions which one seldom sees outside of Museums, among them are duplicates fiom the British Museum Collection which we have been most fortunate in securing. The prices asked are such as they command in England and the continent. Someone very wisely remarked, "It is not the price, it is the being able to get the rare work". With mezzotint, too, the initiative came from abroad, for its inventor, Ludwig von Siegen, was a German amateur, and most of its earliest practitioners were German or Dutch. But very soon after the introduction of the new process, England became the chief centre of attraction to the best mezzotinters of the period, though it was not until the beginning of the eighteenth century that an entirely native school thoroughly vindicated the title of la Mamere Anglaise, by which the art was commonly known before the end of the seventeenth century. Von Siegen's discovery was first taken up by the famous Prince Rupert, and for a considerable period after John Evelyn's notice in his Sculptura (1662) of the "New way of engraving, or Mezzo Tinto, invented and communicated by his Highnesse Prince Rupert," the actual invention of the fame or flattery assigned to the Prince art. But though the discovery is now known not to have been his, he is justly famous in the history of the art for the most magnificent of the early mezzotints, the Great Executioner (after Ribera), which far finer artistic than of shows a real flair, and a feeling anything Von Siegen.

Never in the world's history were the mere accessories of existence embellished with such exquisite decoration as then; never, perhaps, was the human eye better trained in the intricacies of felicitous restraint and almost unerring balance. The beautiful estampe. galante. it may easily be affirmed, will maintain its position. Ex haling the very spirit of the ancien regime, its charms must ever appeal to lovers of daintiness and grace; whilst at the same time, owing to its accurate delineation of architecture and costume, it is certain to retain an undying interest for the student of the vanished ago." LETTERS FROM JOHN JONES 1791-1819 Edited by Sarah Harrison 1 [Transcript of original letters so the numbering relates to letter pages front and verso. The letter scan names have not been inserted but are easy to find using the date of the letter. The pencil numbering indicate that some letters are missing from the original collection. The numbering was probably done by Juxon Henry Jones who owned the letters. The footnotes need to be checked and completed.] 1 [pencil: 6] [pencil: Feb 7/91] Dear Jennefee, As I did not return to chambers, last Saturday, till near six o'clock, & consequently did not receive your letter, till then, I did not notice it in the letter I wrote to my mother from the Oxford Coffee-house. In that letter I gave an account of the very curious manner in which the late curious match has been cobbled up. I shall forbear any further remarks on the subject, for I can offer none which you have not already suggested to yourself. It will be a friendly, though, I hope, not a fruitless wish, that the parties may live very happily. I approve of the plan, of noticing this junction (for I will not call it a marriage) in the Exeter Papers, and I would have it done in this form "27th January, 1791. Married at St Pancras's in Middlesex, Philip Stowey of Kenbury in Devonshire Esqr. to Miss Ann Sheldon"1 for a longer tale than this would probably occasion more observation than is necessary for the credit of the well-adapted couple.
