Introduction Nicholas Ray and the Potential of Cinema Culture STEVEN RYBIN AND WILL SCHEIBEL THE DIRECTOR OF CLASSIC FILMS SUCH AS They Live by Night, In a Lonely Place, Johnny Guitar, Rebel Without a Cause, and Bigger Than Life, among others, Nicholas Ray was the “cause célèbre of the auteur theory,” as critic Andrew Sarris once put it (107).1 But unlike his senior colleagues in Hollywood such as Alfred Hitchcock or Howard Hawks, he remained a director at the margins of the American studio system. So too has he remained at the margins of academic film scholarship. Many fine schol‑ arly works on Ray, of course, have been published, ranging from Geoff Andrew’s important auteur study The Films of Nicholas Ray: The Poet of Nightfall and Bernard Eisenschitz’s authoritative biography Nicholas Ray: An American Journey (both first published in English in 1991 and 1993, respectively) to books on individual films by Ray, such as Dana Polan’s 1993 monograph on In a Lonely Place and J. David Slocum’s 2005 col‑ lection of essays on Rebel Without a Cause. In 2011, the year of his centennial, the restoration of his final film,We Can’t Go Home Again, by his widow and collaborator Susan Ray, signaled renewed interest in the director, as did the publication of a new biography, Nicholas Ray: The Glorious Failure of an American Director, by Patrick McGilligan. Annette Michelson’s contribution to art and film criticism over the last three decades has been un- paralleled. Selected by Arthur L. Mayer, the series is planned as a representative sampling, not a comprehensive survey, of the horror genre. The pictures range from the early German fantasies and legends, THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (I9I9), NOSFERATU (1922), to the recent Roger Corman-Vincent Price British series of adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe, represented here by THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH (I96IO. Milestones of American horror films, the Universal series in the 1950s, include THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925), FRANKENSTEIN (1951), his BRIDE (l$55), his SON (1929), and THE MUMMY (1953). The resurgence of the horror film in the 1940s, as seen in a series produced by Val Lewton at RR0, is represented by THE CAT PEOPLE (19^), THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE (19^4), I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (19*£), and THE BODY SNAT0HER (19^5). Richard Griffith, Director of the Film Library, and Mr. Mayer, in their book, The Movies, state that "In true horror films, the archcriminal becomes the archfiend the first and greatest of whom was undoubtedly Lon Chaney. ...The year Lon Chaney died [1951], his director, Tod Browning,filmed DRACULA and therewith launched the full vogue of horror films. What made DRACULA a turning-point was that it did not attempt to explain away its tale of vampirism and supernatural horrors. -
Lars Von Trier's Critique of the Musical Genre
Ken Woodgate ‘Gotta Dance’ (in the Dark): Lars von Trier’s Critique of the Musical Genre This chapter investigates Lars von Trier’s critique of the musical in his film Dancer in the Dark (2000) both through various aspects of the outer musical itself and through the obvious refer- ences to the classic Broadway/Hollywood musicals 42nd Street and The Sound of Music. Particu- larly important is the cross-cultural perspective: the outer musical presents a European’s view of America which is counterposed to an Americanised view of Europe. The outer musical serves to discredit the inner ones, and hence the film argues against the musical genre. Nevertheless, a metacritical reading of the film will identify the limits of von Trier’s dismissive critique. Of all genres of performance, the musical must be the most self-referential. Putting on a show is, along with falling in love, the musical’s favorite theme. Actors who spontaneously burst into song gain some kind of credibility if they are seen to be mounting their own song-and-dance show. But the ease with which the musical mirrors itself might well be seen, from a rationalistic point of view, as a form of theatrical narcissism, or even syllogism. Does the classic musical say anything, apart from the fact that it is fun to sing and dance? And given that the vast majority of people in the modern industrial- ised world choose to avoid public performances of dancing and absolutely all performances of singing, it could easily be argued that the musical’s promise of fun is simply an illusion of an illusion, an indulgent celebration of theatri- cal posturing. -

CCI3 LITERATURE PROJECTIVE IDENTIFICATION WITH THE ROMA PEOPLE IN BALKAN FILMS Puskás-Bajkó Albina, PhD Student, ”Petru Maior” University of Tîrgu Mureș Abstract: In the cinema of the Balkans Roma people are present at every step. As these films were not directed by Roma specialists, one has the tendency to ask the question: how true are these figures to the real Roma nature and behaviour? And very important: what can we account this ongoing interest in Gipsy culture and life for? Is it curiosity about what seems to otherwise be despised by people or could it possibly be the so-called “projective identification”, an expression extensively used by Jacques Lacan in psychoanalysis? The figure of the Gipsy is omnipresent in the history of Balkan cinema. The first ever Balkan film, shown in foreign countries too was about them: In Serbia: A Gypsy Marriage (1911), the first ever Gypsy film to enter and win an international film festival was from the former Yugoslavia: I Even Met Happy Gypsies (1967), directed by Aleksander Petrovic. It won the “Grand Prix Special”. The image of the Gipsy was, however presented by the non-Roma film-directors in these films. “Rather than being given the chance to portray themselves, the Romani people have routinely been depicted by others. The development of creating artistic works in the high creative level and its process is comparatively analyzed within the progress of the Uzbek cinematography. It is very difficult to express the description of a film by words. One must see the picture and just for this case a cinematographer’s artistic activity of many years needs careful study. They say, it is not written much about a cameraman’s work yet. In our opinion, the essence of their creativity involves expressing the method, plastics and descriptive decision of a ready feature film. The film supposedly is connected only with the name of a director as a single filmmaker. While criticizing a film they usually speak just about a director and leading actors. You can hardly find anything about a cameraman’s work. Naturally, it is not enough. However, a cameraman’s work spent for artistic picture demands a serious analyses and careful study. Undoubtedly, the right stylistics, artistically completeness of the form which strengthens the effective power of a feature film and accepting the film by the audience depends on the cinematographer’s skills. -

Everyday emotion is loose in frame or con- 15 text but rather controlled and regulated in content. Movie emotion, in con- 16 trast, is tightly framed and boundaried but permissive and uncontrolled in 17 content. Movie emotion is therefore quite safe and inconsequential but can 18 still be unusually satisfying and pleasurable. I think of the movie emotions 19 as modeling clay that can symbolize all sorts of human troubles. A major 20 function of movies then is catharsis, a term I use more inclusively than 21 usual. 22 Throughout I use a pragmatist approach to film theory. This position 23 gives the optimal distance to the study of ordinary, middle-level emotion. 24 In contrast psychoanalysis is too close and cognitive theory too distant. 25 This middle position is similar to Arlie Hochschild’s symbolic interactionist 26 approach to the sociology of emotions, which also mediates between 27 psychoanalysis and cognitive theories. 28 29 EMOTION AND FILM THEORY 30 31 This will be an exploration of how emotion works in watching an ordinary Holly- 32 wood movie or others like it. I will be talking only about easy-to-follow movies, 33 not the more artistic or thoughtful kind. The working of emotion in these “easy 34 listening” movies is a controversial issue in film theory.
