Seit letztem Jahr ist es nun fast schon Tradition, dass sich alle Ami-Rap Fans am letzten Samstag vor Weihnachten auf ein Highlight in dieser Sparte freuen können. Denn am 17.12. werden nach Group Home, Dilated Peoples, Lootpack, Black Milk, Sean Price, Brand Nubian, Camp Lo, Das EFX, Masta Ace und vielen anderen amerikanischen Rap- Größen endlich auch SMIF N WESSUN die Bühne der Scheune rocken - und das zum ersten Mal überhaupt in Dresden! Um die Sache richtig abzurunden, konnte der ebenfalls aus Brooklyn stammende JERU THA DAMAJA gewonnen werden, der nach über neun Jahren Pause Dresden erneut beehren wird. Und da Weihnachten nun mal die Zeit der Geschenke ist, möchte sich das Team von krasscore bei allen Gästen für die teilweise jahrelange Treue bedanken, weshalb die Karten für das X-mas-HipHop-Spektakel im Supreme & den Harlem Stores lediglich 18 Euro kosten. laut.de-Biografie Smif'N'Wessun Wir schreiben das Jahr 1995. New York brennt. Gerade hat der Wu-Tang Clan seine "36 Chambers" geöffnet, und Notorious B.I.G. läutet mit seinem Debüt "Ready To Die" eine neue Ära im Rap-Genre ein. Vielen Rapfans wird diese Zeit für immer als die beste überhaupt in Erinnerung bleiben. In dieser für den zukünftigen Hip Hop bahnbrechenden Zeit geht jedoch ein Debütalbum, das perfekt in diese Tage passt, unter: Smif'N'Wessuns "Dah Shinin'". 1993 treffen die beiden Rapper Tek und Steele aufeinander. Beide kommen aus Brooklyn. Beide hat die Straße geprägt. Genau wie die anderen Jungs aus ihrem Umfeld: Ruck aka Sean Price und Rock, später als Heltah Skeltah bekannt, Rapper Buckshot, der mit 5ft und Evil Dee (Da Beatminerz) das Trio Black Moon bildet, sowie Starang Wondah, Top Dog und Louieville Sluggah (zusammen als Originoo Gunn Clappaz tätig). Gemeinsam formen sie das Brooklyn- Kollektiv Boot Camp Clik, das als künstlerische Sammelbecken des Labels Duck Down agiert und mit "For The People" 1997 in der Szene seinen gefeierten Einstand gibt. Jahre später tauchen Tek & Steele auch auf den Boot Camp Clik-Alben "The Chosen Few", sowie "The Last Stand" auf. Der Wohnort Brooklyn, im Boot Camp Clik-Jargon besser unter Bucktown bekannt, spendet die raue Identität der Rapper und schneidert der Posse einen düsteren, Bass-lastigen Sound auf den Leib. Ihren ersten Auftritt haben Tek & Steele 1993 auf dem ersten Release der Bucktown-Clique: Black Moons "Enta Da Stage". 1994 folgt die Single "Bucktown b/w Let's Git It On" und schließlich ein Jahr später das Debüt "Dah Shinin'". Die Die Hard-Fans sind gewonnen, doch Underground-Attitüde hin oder her, das Duo bekommt Probleme mit den Großen der Industrie. Doch sind es diesmal nicht die Majors, die auf die Kreativität der Rapper einwirken, sondern ein amerikanischer Handfeuerwaffenhersteller: Smith & Wesson. Das Multimillionendollar- Unternehmen hat ein Problem mit dem Namen der Band. Es folgt ein dreijähriger Rechtsstreit mit der Folge, dass Tek und Steele ihren Namen 1998 in Cocoa Brovaz ändern. Im gleichen Jahr folgt das Zweitwerk "The Rude Awakening" - im kompromisslosen Sound hat sich trotz Namensänderung nichts geändert. An der Arbeitsmoral jedoch schon. Die folgenden sechs Jahre verstreichen ohne Album- Veröffentlichung, trotz einiger erstklassiger Singles. Allen voran der Remix-Kollaboration "I Love You" mit Mary J. Blige, auf der Marys bittersüßer Chorus und Tek & Steeles Hardcore- Raps symbiotisch die Herzen der Hip Hop-Heads bezirzen. Die Single zeigt, wieso Mary J. Blige zu Recht als wahre Queen of Hip Hop/Soul gilt. 2004 erfreuen sich die treu gebliebenen Fans über die Best Of-Sammlung "Still Shinin'", die mit alten Stücken, Remixen und exklusiven Freestyles der Jungs aufwartet. Im folgenden Jahr profitieren Smif'N'Wessun von der Triple Threat-Kampagne ihres Labels Duck Down und schmeißen nach Sean Prizes "Monkey Barz" und Buckshot & 9th Wonders "Chemistry" den dritten Teil der Serie auf den Markt. Qualitativ können sie zwar mit den anderen Duck Down- Veröffentlichungen nicht ganz mithalten, aber dem Geist der Neunziger frönen sie trotz alledem im höchsten Maße auf "Reloaded". Fraglich bleibt nur, wieso Tek & Steele wieder unverdrossen unter dem Namen Smif'N'Wessun veröffentlichen. Die Firma scheint mit dem Wechsel der amerikanischen Polizei von Revolvern zu semiautomatische Waffen Probleme genug zu haben. Anlässlich der Veröffentlichung von "Monumental" (2011) unter dem alten Namen berichtet Steele, der drei Jahre währende Streit sei irgendwie im Sande verlaufen: "Zeiten ändern sich, Gesetze ändern sich." Fans waren sich ohnehin schon immer darüber einig, dass der Name des Handfeuerwaffenherstellers perfekt zu dem Duo passe. laut.de-Biografie Jeru the Damaja Kendrick Jeru Davis, besser bekannt als Jeru tha Damaja, ist der Prototyp des tiefsinnigen, skillsbehafteten Underground-Emcees. "Meine größte Inspirationsquelle ist mein Leben und meine Spiritualität. Ich habe schon immer gesagt, was mir an den Zuständen der Gesellschaft nicht passt. Deswegen fühle ich mich der wahren Hip Hop-Kultur verpflichtet."(Juice 08-2000) Der aus Brooklyn stammende Jeru tritt zum ersten Mal '92 auf Gang Starrs "I'm the man" in Erscheinung. Als Teil der Gang Starr-Foundation (u.a. Group Home, Afu-Ra, Big Shug) geht er mit ihnen auf US-Tour. Ende '93 veröffentlicht er die Maxi "Come Clean". Der Beat und die Scratches von DJ Premier mit dem energischen Onyx-Sampler im Hook, sowie Jeru’s mit illem Flow vorgetragene Attacken gegen alle Fake A**-Rapper, sorgen bei den Headz für Begeisterungsstürme. Wenig später schließt er mit Payday Records einen Vertrag ab. Erste Ergebnis ist sein 94er Debut "The Sun rises in the East", das sich 300.000 Mal verkauft. Dank der harten Primo-Beats und tiefen Lyrics steht Jeru 1994 zusammen mit den Debuts von Biggie ("Ready to Die") und dem Wutang Clan ("Enter the Wutang") in der vordersten Reihe des wiedererstarkten Eastcoast-Raps. Zwar geht sein 96er Album "The Wrath Of The Math" dank schlechter Promotion kommerziell unter, künstlerisch jedoch kann die Platte mit den Beats von Primo und tighten Lyrics von Jeru überzeugen. Mit einem weiteren Gastauftritt bei Gangstarrs "Speak Ya Cloud" von der "Hard To Earn"-Scheibe, dem Project Crooklyn Clan mit OC und Chubb Rock, sowie zwei Beiträgen auf den NJ-Drive und Black Panther-Soundtracks festigt Jeru seinen Status als deeper Hardcore-Emcee, der auch nicht vor Dissattacken gegen den King of New York Notorius B.I.G. zurückhält (zu dessen Lebzeiten). Doch Jeru schaut auch über seinen NY-Tellerrand hinaus, denn er ist der erste große Rapper, der mit einem deutschen Act (Walkin Large) kollaboriert. Danach ist es lange Zeit ruhig um ihn. Sein Bruch mit der Gangstarr-Foundation und die Trennung von PayDay Records kosten ihm viel Zeit und Kraft. Zudem ist er mit dem Aufbau seiner Produktionsfirma Knowsavage beschäftigt. Erst Anfang 2000 tritt er mit ein paar Maxis zurück ins Rampenlicht. "Es ist einfach besser, sein eigenes Ding konsequent durchzuziehen. Du musst keine Rücksicht nehmen auf andere Leute und ihre Meinungen." So ist sein Mitte des Jahres erscheinendes Comeback-Album "Heroez for Hire" auch durchgehend in Eigenregie entstanden. Auf "Heroez For Hire" droppt Jeru wieder ein paar unglaubliche Lyrics und seine eigenen Beats können sich durchaus hören lassen. Doch wenn man versucht alles selbst in die Hand zu nehmen, muss man Niederlagen einplanen. So geht das Werk auf Grund fehlender Promotion kommerziell so gut wie unter. Trotzdem wird seine Europa-Tour ein voller Erfolg. Jeru präsentiert sich als absoluter Bühnenprofi. Humorvoll und ohne Starallüren rockt der Meister das Haus. In Kiel zum Beispiel sind 500 Leute schier aus dem Häuschen. Die Atmospähre erinnert an glorreiche, vergangene Jamzeiten und läßt einen die heutigen Probleme der Hip Hop-Szene vergessen. .

Mit dem Aufstieg des Dirty South-Raps erkannte Chris Bridges aka Ludacris seine Chance und setzte sich an die Spitze dieser Bewegung. Der Vorzeige-Entertainer wird am Royal Arena Festival sein neues Album „Battle of Sexes“ vorstellen und ist ein würdiger Abschluss des Festivals 2010. Auch die Auftritte von REFLECTION ETERNAL (Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek), die ihr neues Album „Revolutions per Minute“ im Gepäck haben und SIDO (mit Liveband) gehören zu den meisterwarteten Höhepunkten. SABAC RED und LORD LHUS vervollständigen das brillant besetzte internationale Line-Up, wobei es auch einiges Neues zu entdecken gibt!     Institute for Studies In American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York NEWSLETTER Volume XXXIV, No. 2 Spring 2005 Jungle Jive: Jazz was an integral element in the sound and appearance of animated cartoons produced in Race, Jazz, Hollywood from the late 1920s through the late 1950s.1 Everything from big band to free jazz and Cartoons has been featured in cartoons, either as the by soundtrack to a story or the basis for one. The studio run by the Fleischer brothers took an Daniel Goldmark unusual approach to jazz in the late 1920s and the 1930s, treating it not as background but as a musical genre deserving of recognition. Instead of using jazz idioms merely to color the musical score, their cartoons featured popular songs by prominent recording artists. Fleischer was a well- known studio in the 1920s, perhaps most famous Louis Armstrong in the jazz cartoon I’ll Be Glad When for pioneering the sing-along cartoon with the You’ re Dead, You Rascal You (Fleischer, 1932) bouncing ball in Song Car-Tunes. An added attraction to Fleischer cartoons was that Paramount Pictures, their distributor and parent company, allowed the Fleischers to use its newsreel recording facilities, where they were permitted to film famous performers scheduled to appear in Paramount shorts and films.2 Thus, a wide variety of musicians, including Ethel Merman, Rudy Vallee, the Mills Brothers, Gus Edwards, the Boswell Sisters, Cab Calloway, and Louis Armstrong, began appearing in Fleischer cartoons. This arrangement benefited both the studios and the stars.

    AFU-RA & JERU THE DAMAJA I primi colpi della sua carriera arrivano nel 1994 quando attira l’attenzione di Jeru the Damaja, con il quale collabora nel brano Mental Stamina, e poco tempo dopo si affilia ai Gang Starr ed alla relativa Gang Starr Fondation. Partecipa così al secondo album di Jeru, in “Physical Stamina”, ed al successivo tour, in cui mostra il suo talento e strappa un contratto all’etichetta D&D Studios. Si tratta dei suoi primi passi per la carriera solista. Nel 1997 debutta quindi con il suo primo singolo ‘Whirlwind Thru Cities’ e lo stesso anno Afu-Ra pubblica anche ‘Trilogy Of Terror', uno dei suoi brani più celebri a cui partecipa anche Guru dei Gang Starr. Nel 1998 la traccia trova la strada del successo e diventa una perla dell’underground nazionale, Afu-Ra trova grande credibilità nel mondo underground. Nel 2000 è la volta di “Body of the Life Force”, primo LP solista, ispirato alla cultura orientale, data anche la passione che il rapper ha per i film di karate e per l’Asia, il Tai Chi, il Taoismo ed il Buddismo. Successivamente all’uscita dal gruppo Gang Starr e dalla sfera di influenza di Jeru, aumenta le proprie conoscenze e collaborazioni con figure di primo piano del rap newyorkese come GZA, i Cocoa Brovaz, la leggenda Big Daddy Kane (nel brano Stick Up) e gli M.O.P., a cui segue una stretta collaborazione con DJ Premier per Life Force Radio del 2002. Nel biennio successivo Afu-Ra continua le collaborazioni, tra cui si contano anche quelle con artisti italiani come Piotta ed Amir & Mr.
